About Michelle
I am a Certified Beginning Piano teacher as well as an intermediate level teacher. I studied piano at Cerritos College of Norwalk, CA and completed my Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a focus in percussion from CSU Long Beach. I have consistently taught piano, music and drums since 2002.

I have traveled the world to perform music. I have been to Brazil to study samba and its many different styles with the World Percussion Program of CSU Long Beach in 2006 and 2007. In 2012, I traveled to Colombia and Venezuela to perform with the band of Terratour, a humanitarian group. While touring, we collaborated with local musicians in local venues.

You may have noticed from my photos and videos that I'm a Carpenters fan. I sing, play piano and drums. The Carpenters are my musical inspirations and that's exactly how I perform- with
tender, love, and care. I was once the other musical half of a Carpenters tribute band, Close To You. My friend and I learned many of the Carpenters tunes and collaborated with vocals, piano, steel drums, drums and other percussion.

My teaching is focused on reading the notes (pitch), proper technique and rhythm. All are a part of the music-making process and should be equally strong. I start with young beginners when they can count to at least 10 and know the alphabet. The student must have the proper instrument and additional equipment, when necessary. The student is required to practice on a regular basis (daily is ideal). The student is also responsible for books, flashcards, and a metronome. If you need me to provide that, please let me know.

I am currently available for online or in-studio lessons. Please notify me if there is a day and time not available. I try to be flexible but do prefer serious and committed students. When signing up a child for the first time, it is best to make a one year commitment so the child can really learn to work alone and develop self-discipline. Parental guidance and support is necessary for success. For adults, commitment to practicing is key- not just lesson attendance.

You have all the ability and power to learn and be great- I'm just going to guide you all the way to your goal!

Please notify me of the special need prior to booking lessons so I can accommodate.

If you find that I am not available at a day/time you need, please send me a message. I will do my best to accommodate.

Michelle is a great teacher. She is patient, kind, and enthusiastic about music. My child loves going to class and hates missing a class (only when she's sick). She makes learning music fun but it also firm if the child doesn't meet the expectation. It's been a year since we started lessons and we couldn't be more happier.

About Nicholas
*** General Bio ***
Hi, my name is Nick and I am born-and-raised in the pacific northwest! Initially from the Olympia, WA area, I relocated to Seattle in the fall of 2002, and have called Seattle home ever since. I received my education from the renown University of Washington School of Music with a Bachelor's in Music Performance (jazz studies). My career in music since moving to Seattle has provided me many extraordinary experiences both as a performer and an educator that I am quite thankful for.

I am most known in the northwest music/percussion community from a recent 7-year stint instructing and coordinating the University of Washington Husky Drumline. During my time with UW, I helped propel the UW drumline from regional to national prominence by consistently elevating the level of performance year-by-year while bolstering multip
le social media platforms that led to greater recruiting outreach and subsequent response. I was also able to engage the group in similar publicity endeavors with our corporate sponsors such as Remo Drumheads, Pearl drums, and Vic Firth Drumsticks.

In the summer of 2013, I held the position of Percussion Caption Head for the World Class DCI Corps, The Seattle Cascades. We led the Cascades Drum & Bugle Corps to their highest percussion scoring in 6 years, and in any year since. Last but not least, I have also been involved with both the Seahawks Blue Thunder Drumline & Sounders Sound Wave spanning 4 seasons total.

Outside of marching percussion, I've spent significant time fine-tuning a wide array of musical genres behind the drumkit including Rock, Pop, Jazz, Big Band, Funk, Blues, R&B, Soul, Rock Opera, and Electronic, and I've even dabbled in Gospel, Folk, Roots, Country, Musical Theater, Classical, Metal, and Punk.

I currently tour with cinematic-electro-pop band HARPS and over the years have been lucky enough to be involved with Allen Stone, Megan Wilde, Headwaves, Tess Henley, Cracker Factory, and Discs of Fury along the way.

In addition, I've built a sizable following of drumming enthusiasts on YouTube gaining world-wide acclaim from a short series of note-for-note transcription performance videos. Perhaps most remarkable was a very accurate replication of a near 5-minute classic Aaron Spears solo from his performance at the 2006 Modern Drummer Festival Weekend of Usher’s hit “Caught Up”. Spears himself lauded the effort via Twitter within hours of the original upload.

I proudly endorse Pearl Drums, Remo Drumheads, and Vic Firth Drumsticks and mallets.

I believe that good teaching revolves around finding the right balance of three things: what the student wants, what the student needs, and what the student can handle.

As your teacher, I will do my very best in making you a more complete and well-rounded musician while helping guide you toward your goals. Whether you're just starting out, or an experienced pro wanting to brush up on a few new skills, I can help you. Over the past 13 years, I have successfully instructed folks from every age range and skill level, both in ensemble settings of various shapes and sizes, and one-on-one. I'd love to have the opportunity to help you, too!

I have a general core curriculum that I like to follow, but also understand when being overly regimented can take the fun out of the experience. I try my best to go at the student's pace while working to expose them to the necessary material that will ultimately allow them to achieve their goals.

My curriculum utilizes recordings, videos, demonstrations, transcriptions, books, play alongs, and the like. I focus a great deal on maintaining great posture with relaxed playing technique, as well as listening, reading, improvisation, and ear training.

Note for those with special needs: I have experience working with kids with the following conditions: Dyslexia, Partial Deafness, and Asperger Syndrome. In all cases, I was able to help each individual overcome these tremendous obstacles and become quite proficient performers within their ensembles. However, I do ask that any parents get in touch prior to booking lessons so that we may have a conversation about the details of each person's respective situation. That way, I believe I can make sure that I am the right person for the job as each situation is different and requires such special consideration.

Also: I do have experience teaching through a translator.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced musician, I can offer an enjoyable and rewarding experience! I have two decades experience teaching percussion and my most recent appointments include:
2016-18: Visiting Assistant Professor of Percussion, University of Wyoming
2012-16: Lecturer, University of Colorado-Denver
2012-18: Practicing Artist, Denver School of the Arts

I offer lessons (live and synchronous online) from my studio in Longmont, CO as well as in-home lessons in surrounding communities.

About Ed
I'm a percussionist, composer and educator. I hold a Masters degree in Jazz Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado-Boulder and a Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

From 2016-2018, I was the Visiting Assistant Professor of Percussion at the University of Wyoming (UW). At UW, I oversaw all facets of the percussion area including teaching all applied percussion students, percussion ensemble, percussion methods and jazz ensemble. Before UW, I taught percussion, music theory, ear training and jazz improvisation at the University of Colorado-Denver. and the Denver School of the Arts (DSA).

I've also had the good fortune to perform with many musical luminaries including: Phil Woods, Terell Stafford, Joel Frahm, Bob Reynolds, Andy Laverne, Jon Faddis, the Louisvil
le Symphony, the CCM Philharmonia, Michael Rodriguez, Von Freeman, David “Fathead” Newman and Greg Osby.

My goal as a teacher is to maintain the enthusiasm students enjoy when they begin drum lessons. Every student hopes that beginning drum lessons is the start of an exhilarating and rewarding experience. I sustain this interest by empowering students’ musical improvement and achievement.

Lessons are structured around 8-16 week performance projects and feature a unique teaching method that maximizes each student’s musical capabilities. My approach utilizes video instruction and communication to enhance the traditional lesson format. I also integrate and utilize parents of younger beginning students (8-12) into the lesson curriculum. These methods optimize the student’s practice time between lessons and translate to student success!

Ed, I would like to thank you, and commend you for the dedication and superior training you provided to my son, Sterling. Sterling joined your studio young and lacking confidence in his drumming. You had great enthusiasm to keep him inspired and motivated yet, held him accountable to reach your expectations. He gained incredible strides working with you in all aspects of percussion!!! Also, you were a strong, respected leader resident teaching the students at The Denver School of the Arts. About Mikke
My musical journey has led me to play with so many amazing musicians and incredible bands over the years. You may find a list of recordings that I’ve played on under my discography at Better Beats Music. There’s also a selection of videos of live shows and prerecorded music videos, all of which include me on drums. Playing international festivals and tours on the big stage has been a dream come true, but teaching has also been an equally important part of my musical journey. My teaching practice helps me continue to be a better drummer and musician. More than that, I just love witnessing my students build confidence and gain a wider musical, rhythmic vocabulary, developing better skills playing the drums. I want to help my students find their musical voice by consistently working on musical goals, whether playing simple exercises, sophist
icated arrangements and everything in between.

One interesting benefit worth noting is recent scientific studies have shown that drumming reduces anxiety and stress. Now that’s therapy we all need! Rhythm is woven with in all aspects of life. Nature is full of seasonal cycles and macro/micro-rhythms. The art of drumming is an ancient practice with a fascinating history that has evolved over the ages. Drumming is also a primal expression we can all relate with. Everyone is a drummer in the dance of life. Consider the life pulsing rhythm of a heart beat or the rhythmic rise and fall of the chest from the respiratory cycle. Even while resting the lungs and heart continue to breathe and pump to a syncopated rhythm through the night. Rhythm is life.

The drum course is designed for entry-level students. The course covers the basics from holding sticks to playing a full kit. The theory, which is focused on, is rudiments. The 40 rudiments that are taught cover everything from a single stroke roll to a triple ratamaque.

About Dennis
Dennis O'Toole Guitar Instruction is a Denison, TX based proprietor founded in 1995.
It all began as a 'favor' for a few friends by helping them learn the theory portion of playing guitar. Once word began to spread, Dennis O'Toole Guitar Instruction was officially born. The main focus of the private lessons is music theory and how it applies to the guitar. All the while trying to remain fun. Therefore, the musical style/genre which the student is seeking is irrelevant. My goal is for the student to have an understanding of the music which they seek to learn and become an independent guitarist. Since it's inception, I have helped thousands of players from around the world learn guitar theory.
