Originally from San Diego, JP had his first introduction to music when his father brought home a harmonica for him at age 8. He learned "Old Susanna" by ear, and was hooked on music. He was playing trumpet by age 10, and guitar by 14. Early lessons were in rock and blues, and by age 15 JP was playing in local bars and clubs, opening for bands like Iron Butterfly, The Untouchables, Cake, and Switchfoot. In college at the University of California San Diego, JP earned a BA in Music, studying classical composition with Chinary Ung, and Robert Roger Reynolds. After college JP worked as a freelance musician in the San Diego area, playing in pits for San Diego Musical Theatre Company, Latin gigs with the Bi-National Mambo Orchestra, Operas in Tijuana, Jazz Festivals in Ensenada and San Diego, and a weekly jazz brunch. JP continued to freel
ance and teach private lessons while earning an MM in Jazz Studies at San Diego State in 2007.
JP has taught Music in public schools since 2007, in both San Diego and Los Angeles County, and is a California Credentialed teacher.
JP takes a "student-centered" approach to teaching and uses his varied background to help create a customized course that is just right for each student.
*** Lesson Details *** JP has been teaching for 15 years to students aged 5 to 65, and is well versed in the styles of jazz, blues, rock, punk, folk, finger style, acoustic or electric. During his lessons, JP covers topics ranging from learning how to play starting from the basics, improving your technical chops, your ear, sight-reading, theoretical knowledge, and improvisation, as well as guitar maintenance, amplifiers, and effects. JP feels it's important to let the student's interest determine the direction of the lessons. The curriculum of each lesson is tailored to the student. He is also a very patient teacher and presents material in an easily digestible manner.
*** Studio Equipment *** Garage studio or front room - guitars, bass, trumpet etc.
*** Travel Equipment *** I expect students to provide their own instrument, and amplification if required for electric guitar.
*** Specialties *** I teach all students to read music and approach and teach the ability to write music and improvise.
Learning the electric bass? I can help you learn how to play songs as well as how to come up with your own bass parts. I can help you with improvising or reading chord charts as well as how to play for different styles of music.
If you feel like you're stuck or hit a wall, I can help take your skills to the next level; I can help you improve your technique, learn difficult songs, learn more about gear and gigs and performing, help you learn how to play any chord, key, or scale in any position, or help you learn how to solo, improvise, or write songs or come up with your own arrangements of other songs. I can help you learn to read/play rhythm, notation, and/or chord charts, or help you audition for school jazz band or rock bands, etc. I can also help you with music theory as well as learning modes and how chords and scales all work together, and how you can use chords to build all your scales and musical ideas off of, making it easier to improvise or write songs.
Whether you want to learn to be a guitar virtuoso or you just want to be able to play some songs
for your friends and family, I want to provide you with the best information and tools to help you accomplish your goals. I believe in trying to get the most out of the minimum - I want you to get the most benefit out of the time you spend, regardless if you are practicing for thirty minutes or for eight hours.
*** Background *** I have taught guitar lessons for almost 20 years; I also can teach music theory and composition, as well as beginning keyboards, percussion, and voice. I also gig professionally with varying bands, as well as being hired to perform for weddings/events.
I began taking piano lessons when I was six years old, but switched to guitar lessons at age ten. I also have a BA in music composition from UCSD.
I can teach all styles of guitar from electric and steel string acoustic to classical/flamenco as well as bass guitar, and I can teach all styles from rock/pop to jazz to blues to classical to country
*** Lesson Details *** I want the student to have fun with music, but I believe fundamentals are important too. Some schools focus on a "song first" approach, and while I prefer learning songs as soon as possible, I also believe learning some fundamentals will help avoid learning bad habits that can be difficult to break down the road. That being said, I try and be as flexible with the student as possible, as I know we all have different goals and amounts of time that we can dedicate, but I believe that even if someone just wants to learn some basic guitar playing, that a little understanding music theory and fundamentals will help them go a lot further.
Regardless, the student should be able to learn the music they want to play, and I will go out of my way to try and find/learn songs that will keep you interested. I will even transcribe or write my own arrangement if I can't find a suitable one, or to make a simpler version that the student can learn.
I recommend that my students practice at least thirty minutes a day if they want to see consistent progress, although in the beginning they may not be able to practice that much until they develop calluses on the fingertips. Of course, if they can practice more, that would be great, but I understand that with everything else going on, it isn't always possible to practice every day or for everyone to put the same time into it.
ALLERGY WARNING: I have cats at my house, so if you want to travel to my location, it could be an issue if you have cat allergies.
*** Studio Equipment *** Guitars, guitar amplifiers, music stands, computer/audio workstation for recording and notating/printing music, microphones, mixer, studio monitors, etc.
*** Travel Equipment *** Guitar, amp when needed, music/paper, possibly a music stand
I have taught quite a few bass students even though I am primarily a guitarist. I have years of experience playing myself and have been bassist in various bands.
I have a deep knowledge of the fretboard and music theory so if you want to learn the neck better I can help you out. My specialties are Pop, Blues, and Jazz.
If you like blues, we will learn to play a song pretty much the first day and then we learn theory, different riffs, and more songs as we go on. We also can work on improvisation and accompanying other instruments.
If Jazz is your focus, we will start doing some blues as that is fundamental and you can learn songs fast. Then we'll branch out into arpeggios and some theory. After that we apply the theory to actual jazz standards and learn how to create cool bass lines over chord changes.
If you want to do pop/learn songs you love, I will help you learn good technique and we'll learn things on a song by song basis.
No matter what style you want to ...

e interests and strengths are for the student. For example, if you enjoy jazz more than classical we'll focus more on what you are particularly passionate about. Numan first of all is a great guitar player. He has studio experience, and has played professionally for years. He has taught me many great techniques in playing guitar. He has patience and is very clear and thorough when teaching and works at the students pace. In just a short while I was already learning some of my favorite songs, reading music, scales, music theory and writing my own tunes! I definitely recommend this teacher if you want to learn the guitar from top to bottom.

Numan is the real deal. I spent years putting off taking guitar lessons as I've never been the best student. A friend of mine recommend Numan and I thought I'd give him a try. His teaching style is very patient and thorough. He does not get frustrated and works with me at my pace. He's also the best guitar player I've ever known. In just a few months I'm playing at a level I never thought I'd be able to. I cannot recommend Numan enough.
We bring 17+ years of experience to table in both teaching and professional industry work.
I own a local music/art/production institution which hosts lessons for many instruments and artistic pursuits. Personally, I've been teaching for over 17 years, and I teach beginner to advanced students in instruments like guitar, bass, piano/keys, voice, and drums, and depending on your needs, our studio offers a variety of professional teachers that teach all woodwind, brass, and stringed instruments.
I also am an online teacher for a the world's biggest web platform for guitar instruction, and teach lessons alongside those in Berklee alumni, Musician's Institute, as well with many very famous artists that are now in the music business.
Though I've had the fortune to work with some of the best in studios, as a songwriter, and player, and in education, both professional and informal, I love to teach entry level players up through
the intermediate levels the most. I enjoy watching people discover things for the first time, and in my teaching I really do my best to craft my lessons to the needs of the students. My primary aim in teaching is that I would cultivate in my students a love for music and learning. With these two things in place, a student can go on to be and learn anything.
Join me, we'll have a great time, and we'll get you to your goals while we're enjoying the journey of music together!!
My son was very happy with the lesson and the tips that Dave provided. Looking forward to future lessons.

Dave is a great professional teacher that knows to assess his students, knowledgeable in piano and guitar!
June 21, 2019
Dave is the absolute “best” teacher I have ever had! I’m an older (69) student and his techniques amaze me. I’m learning things I have never been exposed to and so wish I had had a teacher like Dave when I was 10...maybe I would be able to play! Thanks Dave!
"Excellent teacher for students of all ages and experience
Robert has been assisting me with my bass guitar and acoustic guitar education. He has expertly
weaved music theory into my lessons and has given me a huge boost to my musical confidence. I used to think some things would be too difficult and perhaps insurmountable but with his encouragement I feel a lot more confident. I have been helped because his lessons have been tailored to my needs and weaknesses. Robert is a very friendly music teacher who would be able to assist anyone of any age. I cannot recommend him enough."
"Marcelo is a great instructor. He very quickly found my "level" and by the end of the first lesson had a plan for me which has been just perfect so far. H
e will challenge and train your brain along with your technique, and gently push you beyond your comfort zone. I'm extremely happy to be studying with Marcel and would recommend him to anyone."
"Our son took bass lessons from Alex and really enjoyed them! He learned to listen to current songs and find the bass line. Xavier also learned how to re
ad tab, and he really enjoyed playing his bass along with recorded tracks. Our son is a pretty busy kid, trying to balance sports, school, scouts and music. We did not want him to feel pressure about learning the bass, but we did want him to get a taste of how fun it can be to play music! We also wanted him to understand that learning to play requires a combination of listening and reading music. Alex was a great fit for our son! And now Xavier has a basic musical skill that we know he can build on someday!"
"Paul was great! Super friendly and very talanted. He made learning the bass fun and exciting! He really knows his stuff."
"Really like Steve's teaching ! Very easy and simplified instruction.Thank you ! Can't wait for the next Lessons."
"Great teacher! I learn so much more in my lessons with David than I think I ever would anywhere else. He is very patient and breaks down music theory so i
t is easy to understand. Bass is tricky for me and he helps me understand my place more and provides context. He also instills a lot of confidence in my abilities and gives great feedback. And he's a lot of fun!"
"Greg is an amazing teacher! His understanding of the bass and musical theory really helped me progress in my playing. Definitely recommend to anyone looki
ng to be a better musician."
"Collin is an amazing teacher! I started taking lessons with him on the electric bass - I was a beginner on the instrument, but I had lots of previous musi
cal knowledge. Collin was incredibly patient with me from the get go, and had a lot of insight as to what tunes would be good for me to start with and what exercises and scales would suit my specific level of learning. He was patient and kind with me, and went at exactly the pace that I needed him to. Whenever I was struggling with a scale or bass line, he would immediately notice, slow down, and show me note for note what I was supposed to play. Conversely, whenever I was learning quickly and with ease, he would react accordingly and speed up the information a bit or move on to more difficult tasks. Collin a very skilled musician himself which makes it all the more inspiring to take lessons from him. He makes every lesson fun and informative. After each lesson, I felt pumped to practice and play during the week between our lessons. Collin is an incredible guy and a wonderful instructor - highly recommended!!!"
"Such a good bass player !! Now I know how to play walking bass :)"
