About Sara
Hello, and welcome to my page! I am a classically trained singer from Columbia, SC. I have also taught and performed in Southern California, Boston, and the greater Charlotte area. My philosophy is that anyone can learn to sing; just like any other instrument, all it takes is determination and practice. I welcome all levels and ages of aspiring vocalists. I am also open to all genres, from opera to rock! The goal of my lessons is to help singers feel confident with their vocal technique and to feel joy in sharing their gifts.

In addition to singing, I also teach beginner piano, music theory, audition prep, and ear-training.

About Marissa
My name is Marissa, and I come to the music studio with a passion for teaching students of all ages and needs. My education and training has taken me from Phoenix, AZ where I grew up to Greenville, SC where I received both an undergraduate degree in Music Education and a master's degree in Performance. While in Greenville from 2007-2014, I took many choral tours and led both adult choirs and childrens choirs. I often enjoyed performing for local children's CD recordings. I currently sing in a nationally acclaimed community choir, The Rivertree Singers, who perform regularly in and around the Greenville area. It was also my privilege to train a young member of the American Boy Choir and accompany for him in 2011. It was in Orlando, FL that I decided to build my own studio through Takelessons, and I enjoyed every minute of it! In August of
2016, my family moved back to South Carolina to be near family. After a brief hiatus of enjoying motherhood, I am excited to be back with Takelessons and to have the opportunity to work with talented students here in South Carolina!

Lessons with me are always conducted in the utmost professional way, and I come to the studio with a desire to teach not only music, but the love of music. I love music and want my students to love it too! I use illustrations and examples to make abstract ideas more concrete. Students are encouraged to explore their voice and piano skills in each of their lessons and during their practice time. I challenge my students to do their best and try to find the balance between keeping them inspired and pushing them to do their best!

We had a great lesson. As the first lesson, Marissa took time to get to know my daughter and understand her background. She kept the lesson well paced. My daughter thought Mrs. V was both nice, and funny as they worked through the lesson.

Marissa is a wonderful instructor. She listens to her students and works with them to find material that is fun and engaging but also challenging. She provides constructive criticism when needed, and always quick to praise a job well done.

About Calvin
As a classically trained violist with orchestral, chamber, and solo performance experience, my teaching style is geared towards performance and expression. I don't adhere to any one book of teaching, adjusting my teaching to the unique needs of each student. My teachers came from different pedagogical backgrounds; as a result, I have a wide array of teaching tools available to pass on to my students. I have taught with El Sistema Colorado, the Longy School of Music's El Sistema program, and had a Teaching Artist residence with Cambridge Public Schools. Currently pursuing my DMA in Viola Performance from the University of South Carolina, I hold a BM in Viola performance from the Lamont School of Music and a MM in Viola Performance from the Longy School of Music.

I have played viola since I first began my musical studies at age 9. As a r
esult, I have seen teachers hold viola students back, simply because they play the "lesser" instrument in the viola family. I do not hold my students back and I hold them all to the same high level of playing, regardless of which instrument they play.

About Stan
Hi! I am a private music instructor offering lessons both in-studio and online. I hold a Bachelor of Music Degree from Berklee College of Music, where I graduated Summa cum Laude, and I have over 36 years' full-time experience as an instructor.

I also have over four decades of experience as a professional jazz, rock, and theater musician. My experience has taken me from nightclubs to concert stages to churches, as well as television studios, radio stations, and many recording studios.

Finally, I am a published author with several titles dedicated to helping musicians becoming the best they can be.

**** MY TEACHING STYLE ****

My teaching style is often referred to as laid-back, gentle, informative, and very supportive. My focus is on enrichment, encouragement, and results.

I don't work with “one-size-fits-all” methods. Ea
ch lesson is customized to make the most of each student's own unique abilities, limitations, preferences, and interests. Whether students prefer, or do better with, traditional materials, playing/singing along with their favorite recordings, improvisation, or anything in between, I am more than happy to accommodate and bring out each student’s best!

I teach real music -- students begin playing music they love almost from day-one. For example, many of my piano and guitar students pride themselves on learning to play every song on the Beatles One album ... playing right along with the CD! Reading, playing by ear, improvisation (jamming), singing while you play ... there are so many ways to play and avenues to explore in music.

**** MY STUDIO ****

My studio is spacious (very spacious – no cubicles here!), well-appointed, and very quiet. Unlike music stores and multi-lesson facilities, there are no other lessons on the premises, no drummers going crazy on the other side of the wall. This means students can concentrate better and learn faster. There is also plenty of room for parents and siblings who may wish to sit in on lessons.

**** STYLES / GENRES ****

I believe that students make the most progress learning music they love and I am very happy to teach every student the style of music he or she loves most.

My most requested genres are: pop, rock, country, blues, classic rock, jazz, and classical. Some students arrive knowing exactly what they want, but most are happy to explore various styles that interest them in search of the perfect fit. It is not at all uncommon for a student to spend part of their lesson polishing up a Beethoven piece or jazz standard, then finish up playing the chords to “Hotel California” along with the CD. Another student might start off their lesson learning a Taylor Swift hit, then move over to doing some blues improvisation. Variety is a wonderful thing and it is highly encouraged!

**** MY STUDENTS ****

Over the years, I have taught students from four years old to eighty-somethings. I’ve taught absolute beginners (most of my students start from square-one), hobbyists, seasoned professionals, even a Grammy nominee and a Grammy winner! Many of my young students have gone on to perform in school bands / jazz bands and/or professionally. In all cases, they acquire a skill that will last for a lifetime and provide joy, enrichment, and satisfaction.

Do you have a song or two in your heart? Contact me today and I will help you reach your musical goals and have a very good time doing it!

Stan is very knowledgeable about singing, and he teaches more than just voice lessons. It seems like he looks for the best in you as an artist, and try to take it to another level. I'm a new student of his, and it's been great so far. Looking forward to the weekly lessons.

I am a graduate of the Cal Poly Pomona music department looking forward to sharing my passion and knowledge with people who want to express themselves with music!

I use the John Thompson Piano book series to build understanding of written music, theory, and artistic expression. In addition to teaching classical techniques, I help guide my students on the path to writing their own music!

During my time in university I played piano with the Kellogg Soul Ensemble and the Jazz Combo. I also sang extensively with the university concert choir.

I currently play gigs with a jazz trio and a funk-rock band. I also play keyboard on recordings for local pop and hip-hop artists, and assist with arrangements and choir direction.

I live in the beautiful state of South Carolina, where I attended the University of South Carolina and graduated in music education (choral) with a vocal performance certificate. I have been teaching privately since 2003, and have worked in various music positions, including choir director for schools, churches, and community choirs; organist; and pianist.

I am also a successful composer, primarily of sacred vocal works, which have been performed internationally, including known performances in the United States, England, Brazil, and Madagascar.

My most recent musical venture is my You Tube channel, "The Singing School," which focuses on vocal exercises.

Beyond music, I love spending time with my husband and kids, and I love all things water - going to the beach and kayaking on the lake are some of my particular favorite pastime

Is Piano the BEST Instrument to Play? Sound Off!
We came across this interesting article from MyDreamTeacher.com and just had to share!  Here's a taste of the reasons the author thinks the piano is the best instrument out there: 1) It has more notes. The piano keyboard represents every note available on other instruments.  There is no instrument that has a note that the piano does not have.  This reason alone gives a strong case for everyone to play piano. 2) What you hit is what you get. The piano produces the most immediate results
