About Michaud
Composer, guitarist, and vocalist Michaud is an internationally based musician with over 15 years of teaching experience. As a solo and ensemble guitarist, Michaud is comfortable working in a wide spectrum of musical styles which have included jazz, classical, tango, rock, pop, latin folkloric music, and beyond. As a composer and producer, his work includes compositions for chamber ensembles, orchestra, electronics, Max/MSP, and performance art.

Background:
In addition to solo performance, Michaud has regularly played in a tango duo with Mirta Wymerszberg, is half of Duo Michma, leads The Ancient Present- a chamber orchestra performing new works- and is an auxilary member of Correo Aereo. In the past, he has served as musical director of the Tuesday Tease house band, was a regular guitarist for Bissou (focusing on French jazz and st
andards from the 1920’s-30’s). Over the years, he has had the honor and pleasure to work with Adam Tully, Ramiro Gallo, honey.moon.tree, Paintings for Animals, Justin Froese, Adra Boo, Beth Fleenor, Evan Flory-Barnes, Heather Bentley, Dawn Clement, the Seattle Rock Orchestra, Chicharra Tango, Ben Thomas, Matt Weiner , Dana Wen, Amy Denio, Okanamode SoulChilde, Brad Hawkins, Ahamefule J. Oluo, Wayne Horvitz, Jakob Pek, Ammon Swinbank, and many others.

Michaud studied at the Cornish College of the Arts with Emily Doolittle, Jim Knapp, and Michael Nicolella. Michaud’s studies beyond Cornish include time at The Evergreen State College, where his studies with Terry Setter, Ben Kamen, Arun Chandra, and Sean Williams included an emphasis in Consciousness Studies and Music.

Michaud’s relationship with music began early on, singing in a choir and later playing in a youth orchestra. With the help of his grandfather he began playing guitar when he was 11, and quickly adopted this as his main instrument. Throughout high school, Michaud played in the school jazz band on both bass and electric guitar. Towards the end of this time, he started playing with honey.moon.tree, as well as Paintings for Animals, deepening his roots into rock music and expanding it into more experimental territories. Shortly thereafter, Michaud began to develop his work with the classical guitar and moved to South America to pursue a study of music, specializing in folkloric and indigenous music. After a year of study, Michaud returned to the United States and continued on to form a series of bands and ensembles in the roles of composer, songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist.

Michaud is a deep thinker and a compassionate and wise teacher. He is my colleague from Seattle where I have collaborated on numerous musical performances. I have sat in on his lessons and observed his kind and thoughtful approach to various students. He not only is a master of his subject, but he also interweaves rich additional background information of a theoretical and historical nature into his instruction. I have watched him teach a blind guitar student with great compassion and a tremendous grasp of what the challenges are in this situation. I enjoy his questioning approach to teaching, where he engages the student’s mind in trying to understand the root of a musical or technical problem. Anyone who studies with Michaud is in for an eye-opening and consciousness raising experience. I recommend his teaching highly.

Took lessons in ukulele and acoustic guitar from Michaud for a period of six months, and greatly enjoyed the process.

Michaud carefully adapted our lessons to suit my interests and gave a very good account of the fundamentals of both instruments and the relevant music theory.

Have not had better lessons, period. Highly reccomended.

I teach out of the Alfred's Piano course, but am open to trying out any music books you may already have in your home. I do expect my students to purchase the books they would like to learn out of and to have the material I have given them for homework ready, completed, and practiced by the time we have our weekly lesson. I recommend at least twenty to thirty minutes of practice every day, and will give rewards for having practiced well, and for performing well in our lessons. I would love it for my students to be clear on what they would like to learn, and I love using songs that the student enjoys to make his or her music learning process fun.

It is incredibly important for students to have a general understanding of music theory, regardless of their instrument. Music theory is the core of the music that we play and listen to, and it is a vital part of every student's music education. The purpose of music theory is to show students how music works, and for that reason, every music student should be exposed to it at some level.

Having started piano at the age of 7, I was taught music theory at a very beginning of my music education. I studied it throughout my childhood and into my collegiate years. I can teach this subject in detail and help the student develop a clear understanding of the music that they read and play.

About Sheila
My interest in music began at the age of seven when I began private instruction in classical piano, and by the age of ten, I began playing the flute. I received my Bachelor of Music with a degree in Music Education from the University of Redlands, where I studied flute with Sara Andon. There, I performed in the university's Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Orchestra. During my third year at university, I studied abroad at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemet, Hungary.

In 2013, I graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Masters degree in Flute Performance where I studied flute with Sandra Kipp. At CSUN, I performed in the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Northridge Flute Quartet, and various chamber ensembles. I currently reside in Irvine where I teach private flute and
piano lessons and perform with local ensembles.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal as a music educator is to foster excellence in the art of music through private instruction. I have worked with students of all ages ranging from 5 to older adults.

In my studio, students will have a well rounded music education. This means that we will work on a variety of things such as sight reading, music theory, music history, and a wide range of repertoire (from Beethoven to the Beatles!) While I have high expectations for my students, I do my best to keep the lessons relaxed and lighthearted. My hope is that the student is always engaged and interested during lessons.

My three expectations:

1. Come prepared both mentally and physically (this is especially important for flutists-- make sure to warm up prior to the lesson!)

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. This is non-threatening territory, I'm here to guide you and help you. Remember that mistakes happen, we're human. Just be sure to learn from those mistakes so that you can take something away from each experience.

3. For parents-- BE INVOLVED! I can't tell you how often I've seen younger students excel when their parents were proactive in the experience. This means encouraging them to practice, coming up with a rewards system, and even sitting in on the lesson to take notes. This way, you can reinforce what we accomplished during the lesson at home together. It's difficult for music teachers to compete with iPads, Playstations and television, so let's get creative together!

*** Required Materials ***
Flute students must own a well maintained flute, as an instrument that is out of adjustment causes frustration and can initiate bad habits. In addition, the student must also have a metronome and tuner, a music stand, flute repertoire, and an assignment book for me to write down each week's assignments.

Piano students must have a working acoustic piano or digital piano in their home for piano lessons. The student must also have a metronome, piano repertoire, and an assignment book for each week's assignments.

Miles McAllister is a Southern California-based performer and educator. He is a member of the nationally and internationally touring brass quintet Presidio Brass (presidiobrass.com). He is also 3rd trumpet of the Santa Barbara Symphony and a member of the Disneyland Band at the Disneyland Resort. Miles is an active freelance performer and has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony, Pacific Chorale, Long Beach Symphony, San Diego Symphony and Pops, New West Symphony, California Philharmonic, Redlands Symphony Orchestra, Riverside Philharmonic, Golden State Pops Orchestra, San Bernardino Symphony, Pacific Brass Ensemble, and many other groups throughout Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County, and the Inland Empire.

He earned his Master of Music in Trumpet Performance at California State University Fullerton in 2015 and graduated from the University of Redlands in 2011 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance.

As an educator, Miles is energetic and keeps lessons positive, varied, and always with a goal in mind. There is a constant emphasis on building fundamentals and using those as a foundation for making great music. Not everyone learns the same way so it is his aim to be adaptable to the student's needs to help them understand and process the concepts behind good trumpet playing. My name is Sarah, and I am a Music Therapy and Composition student at Converse. I have over 15 years of experience in piano, and play six other instruments as well. I have a passion for music, and love merging that passion with my love of teaching and helping others. I'm also a dancer, and have recently started applying my expertise to teaching others how to dance as well!

What makes my teaching style unique is that I can relate to students. I have been there, so I know how it feels. I know how practicing can be boring or frustrating, and how it can be hard to find time to practice. Using this experience I employ unique games an

Theory. Sounds dull, doesn't it?!

With a proper understanding, however, it will be the most important 'tool' in your musical toolbox. It is more than nuts and bolts. It is the very 'reason' music sounds good or bad!

I teach how piano theory can be your friend and ally as we introduce intervals, analyze chord progressions, identify and integrate the I IV V, the ii V I, and other amazing fundamental progressions.

Then more advanced students learn jazz theory fundamentals, altered chords, tri-tone substitutions and other intimidating sounding but easy to learn musical devices. Together, we will tame the beast and make it submit not only to our understanding but to our musical advantage for comping, transposing, substitution and many useful purposes.

Theory will be your friend!

What do Star Wars, Billy Joel and Dallas Holm all have in common?

All three inspired me to attempt to play music.

Music has played a very significant role in my life since high school, where 'study hall' was my chance to first play by ear on a grand piano. I LOVED playing music and singing!

Evidently it 'took.' I sooned gained admission through audition to the University of Tennessee where I studied classical, jazz and vocal music with Dr. Bill Dorn, Dean of Piano, and acclaimed jazz master and author Dr. Jerry Coker.

From the World's Fair to the Biltmore House, I have enjoyed performing at these and many other venues. Yet, teaching is my first love musically.

Over the years I have found teaching not only sight-reading based methods but chordal and ear training to be essential elements of enhancing my students and student
performers.

You see, reading sheet music is only a piece of the pie. When you add ear-training, active listening, performance training, multi-genre analysis, accompaniment and collaboration to the educational mix, students begin to understand and LOVE music.

Once students love music, there is no stopping them! Students practice and PLAY more, and they get better because of their enhanced practicing. It becomes less work and more PLAY!

And passionate students become PERFORMERS! Whether for audiences of one or hundreds, the satisfaction and sense of fulfillment is amazing, and THAT is why I teach. The rewards and excitement are mutual, for the student, for me and their audiences.

I have been performing and teaching for over 35 years and love to share my amazing musical experiences (and experience). It could change your approach to music, enhance your appreciation and understanding of music, and quite possibly change your musical life.

I had 2 years of piano lessons as a child followed by 6 years of flute in High School as an intermediate student. After hearing Todd perform at a special event, my life was changed! His passion for performing and playing inspire, engage and transform a room! Of course I wanted to take lessons! As a teacher he took me beyond the fundamentals into theory, key changes, cordal ear training, musical stylizing and so much more. I started my path as a violinist when I was 7. My childhood and youth years were fool of performances, master classes and concert tours.
