During my undergraduate studies, I was recruited and performed as the lead female vocalist for a Rock band that a few fellow music students had formed. While in college, I was trained in classical voice, piano, music theory, musical theater performance, and vocal pedagogy (vocal training). My vocal pedagogy studies credentialed me to become a professional vocal instructor. I began teaching voice after I earned my degree, and have been teaching private voice lessons for over ten years.

Most of my present expertise in teaching voice grew from my vocal pedagogy studies, my teaching experience which has developed over time, my own personal vocal dedication, and my training and understanding of various genres of vocal performance. My present singing career is as an inspirational singer; my vocal students encompass various genres in which I have experience, including: Inspirational, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Rock, Classical, as well as various degrees of popular music.

*** Audition Preparation ***
I have coached many of my students to prepare for auditions: auditions to be accepted into performing arts schools, parts in musicals and plays, joining a band or vocal ensemble, as well as auditions for televised singing shows, such as "The Voice," "Sunday's Best," "American Idol" and "The X Factor."

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students by using the tried and true techniques I have found to be successful, and allow the student to be my guide as to which direction to take with his or her vocal training. Whether the student is a novice, a professional, or somewhere in between, each student, after obtaining the basic singing knowledge and techniques, will have a vocal training schedule geared to his or her individual needs and development. Lessons are for the most part very casual in nature, and the student’s dedication (practice, practice, practice) will dictate whether or not the lessons become stricter. A few months into the vocal instruction, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about reading music and sight singing, if he or she so chooses, as well as vocal performance techniques for singing in front of an audience. Within one year, dedicated students may also have the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and perform in front of an audience at a recital with other vocal students. Please note that my preference is to work with teens age 13 through adults of any age. I believe that younger voices need more time to develop and stand to be damaged if too much stress is put on them too soon. However, exceptions for children under 13 may be made for gifted young singers.

If needed, I provide a portable piano keyboard, microphone with amplifier, paper handouts of lessons, etc. The student needs to have paper to take notes and a writing instrument.

I've directed children's choirs of 100+. I've directed over 15 musical theatre productions and I own a studios in Enconitas where I ha river 12 teachers and a recording studio for students to learn how to record music. To date we've put out four albums! We host bi-yearly recitals with over 150 performers on all instruments.

Rising soprano Jamie Balter most recently received recognition by both The American Prize in Voice and New York Lyric Opera Theatre Competition for her performance of works by Strauss, Mozart, and Wagner. A native of Baltimore, Ms. Balter earned her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. This past July, she made her role debut as Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy. During the 2015/16 season, Ms. Balter returned to the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival as Marcellina in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, where she also covered Countess Almaviva under the baton of Maestro James Richman. In addition, she appeared as La Chatte/L’Écureuil in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges. My name is Marissa, and I come to the music studio with a passion for teaching students of all ages and needs. My education and training has taken me from Phoenix, AZ where I grew up to Greenville, SC where I received both an undergraduate degree in Music Education and a master's degree in Performance. While in Greenville from 2007-2014, I took many choral tours and led both adult choirs and childrens choirs. I often enjoyed performing for local children's CD recordings. I currently sing in a nationally acclaimed community choir, The Rivertree Singers, who perform regularly in and around the Greenville area. It was also my privilege to train a young member of the American Boy Choir and accompany for him in 2011. It was in Orlando, FL that I decided to build my own studio through Takelessons, and I enjoyed every minute of it! In August of
2016, my family moved back to Simpsonville, SC to be near family. After a brief hiatus of enjoying motherhood, I am excited to be back with Takelessons and to have the opportunity to work with talented students here in South Carolina!

Pierre-Olivier graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Mons (Belgium) and the Departmental Conservatory of Valenciennes (France) under the supervision of the prominent French lyric signing professor Daniel Ottevaere. Today, he is working with the famous tenor Daniel Galvez Vallejo. Over the past 10 years, Pierre-Olivier, as a professional signer, has performed in opera, musical, jazz and oratorio in many European cities, including Paris, Versailles, Toulouse, Reims, Lille, Bruxelles, Barcelona, Sevilla, Berlin, Bucharest, etc. Outside Europe, he has also performed in Moscow, Jerusalem, and Santiago de Chile.

When I finally spoke up why I have trouble practicing on me own. It evolved in my understanding of setting alarms for myself to set time for myself to actually do it. Plus he changed his tune and worked with me better too. But I had to talk about it myself first. Also he does help a lot indeed. And is very supportive, I am definitely going to record myself now and send it to him like he suggests. Probably not every day. But maybe 5-6 days a week hopefully. Definitely more after learning to set alarms for myself each day and set that time for my singing practice.

I only got to have courses with Pierre-Olivier for three months because he had to move to the USA, but these three months were the most productive for me.
I am student at a conservatory in Belgium and have a full training there but I found Pierre-Olivier's courses very (dare I say even more) interesting and complete.
I made a lot of progress during the 3 months I spent being his student: my technique improved a lot, and I learned so much about interpretation.
Pierre-Olivier has a vast general knowledge which is very pleasant as he can help you understand and analyse your score thoroughly. He not only teaches classical music but is open to a great deal of styles and I had the chance to explore the genres a bit more and exploit my voice.
I was really sad to see him leave because it is so hard to find a good teacher (trust me I had plenty) and hope he'll come back to Belgium
I am looking forward to seeing him again during one of his summer camps back in Europe.

Singing is not just about voice. It's about communication and passion.

To properly reach your desired audience, you must 'speak their language' in such a way that reaches their heart (but doesn't hurt their ears in the process).

For many years I have taught stage performers, groups and worship teams about passion and purpose in their presentation, as well as techniques that will avoid unwanted distractions while touching the heart of the listener.

What do Star Wars, Billy Joel and Dallas Holm all have in common?

All three inspired me to attempt to play music.

Music has played a very significant role in my life since high school, where 'study hall' was my chance to first play by ear on a grand piano. I LOVED playing music and singing!

Evidently it 'took.' I sooned gained admission through audition to the University of Tennessee where I studied classical, jazz and vocal music with Dr. Bill Dorn, Dean of Piano, and acclaimed jazz master and author Dr. Jerry Coker.

From the World's Fair to the Biltmore House, I have enjoyed performing at these and many other venues. Yet, teaching is my first love musically.

Over the years I have found teaching not only sight-reading based methods but chordal and ear training to be essential elements of enhancing my students and student
performers.

You see, reading sheet music is only a piece of the pie. When you add ear-training, active listening, performance training, multi-genre analysis, accompaniment and collaboration to the educational mix, students begin to understand and LOVE music.

Once students love music, there is no stopping them! Students practice and PLAY more, and they get better because of their enhanced practicing. It becomes less work and more PLAY!

And passionate students become PERFORMERS! Whether for audiences of one or hundreds, the satisfaction and sense of fulfillment is amazing, and THAT is why I teach. The rewards and excitement are mutual, for the student, for me and their audiences.

I have been performing and teaching for over 35 years and love to share my amazing musical experiences (and experience). It could change your approach to music, enhance your appreciation and understanding of music, and quite possibly change your musical life.

Excellent instructor! Todd is knowledgeable, encouraging & patient while always staying on task. I've worked with him for 3 years now and have gained comfortability and confidence in my playing while staying motivated.
Todd is the 4th piano instructor I've worked with in my 12 years of living in WNC and I find him to be the best of all.

I had 2 years of piano lessons as a child followed by 6 years of flute in High School as an intermediate student. After hearing Todd perform at a special event, my life was changed! His passion for performing and playing inspire, engage and transform a room! Of course I wanted to take lessons! As a teacher he took me beyond the fundamentals into theory, key changes, cordal ear training, musical stylizing and so much more. Todd is very patient and knowledgeable; a wonderful communicator, entertainer, and teacher. I highly recommend him!

I am 15 years old and I wanted to learn opera singing. I can now sing opera pretty good, but I’m still learning. Tegan helps me to improve areas of my voice that are difficult for me to master on my own. She is always very positive when teaching and I love that about her.

I wanted to learn to sing songs from my favorite pop artists. Tegan taught me techniques to to sing like Adele. Before I came to her I didn’t know how to belt, now I do it all the time!
