I began teaching viola lessons privately 5 years ago and have had as many as 40 students at one time. I have had many beginner students of all ages, and welcome students of any age or level. I approach each one of my students individualistically, focusing on the kind of music that interests and excites them most, while also providing material and exercises to help strengthen the students’ musicianship and technical proficiency on the instrument. I believes in bettering my student’s abilities through encouragement and positive reinforcement, guiding them to find a love and commitment to music. I understand that above all else, music should feel fun and rewarding and serve as a way to express yourself. If you're not having fun, you're missing the point! I have taught classical music, jazz, fiddle, and pop, and have a background in the Suzuki Method

Viola can be an exciting instrument to learn and master. So how you get there is up to you, but practice is required to succeed with any instrument. Taking lessons with me, you'll be provided with technique that was developed by esteemed artists and pioneers, such as Lionel Tertis. I have a B.Mus in Performance from Northern Illinois where I studied with the very talented and musical, Anthony DeVroye of the Avalon String Quartet. Additionally, I've attended the Chicago College of Performing Arts and studied there with Lawrence Neuman of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Roger Chase -a former student of Tertis- who is a major figure in the Viola world for his artistry and masterful control of the viola.
The study of chamber music has afforded me the honor of working with even more musicians, including Shmeul Ashkenasi and Mathias Tacke, both of the Vermeer Quartet.

Correct play position, reading viola clef, scales, etudes, solo pieces, shifting, vibrato. Possibility to play in a student string orchestra!

During the first lesson we will get acquainted and you can tell me about your history with the instrument and what you would like to learn. Then I will come up with fun technique building exercises so you can play with ease. Then we usually work on a goal piece. For the piece I will give you practice methods and ways to play through the pieces with a beautiful tone. Viola is fun and expect to have a great time!
