About John

I am a 33 year old Trumpet, French Horn and Voice Instructor in the Ramona area. I have 20 years experience playing trumpet, French Horn and Singing and play in several groups around the
San Diego area including:
The Amalgamated, a Ska/Reggae Band
Full Strength Funk Band
Heartland Brass Ensemble
Trumpet R Us
Ottly Mercer
Filarmonica Portuguesa Uniao De San Diego
California Beach Brass Quintet
Tierrasanta Lutheran Church, Choir and Bell Choir and Brass Ensemble
Ramona High School Trumpet and Mellophone/French Horn Coach
Thurgood Marshall Middle School Musical Vocal Coach

I am
very passionate about music, learning, teaching, performing and practicing. Every day my goal is to promote music, learn, practice and help people enjoy music either by listening or performing.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will start with good solid warm-up exercises focusing on breathing and proper technique for Brass playing. The 2nd part of lessons will be technique, Scales and method books for trumpet and french horn. The last part of lessons will be working on Solo repertoire and learning songs for performance, sight reading, playing duets and learning jazz improvisation if interested. Lessons will include sight reading, play along/sing along CD's Scales and technique as well as theory.

For my Trumpet Students I will use the Herbert L. Clarke Technical Studies Book to help improve aerobic endurance, technical and finger velocity as well as production of good tone quality. I will also use the Earl Irons Group of 27 exercises to help improve air flow, breathing control and fluidity of sound throughout all registers. I will also use the J. B. Arban's Conservatory method for other techniques including scales, double and triple tonguing, intervals as well as duets and solo repertoire. For jazz minded students I will start with basic fundamentals of improvisation including melodic improv, Blues forms and blues scales as well as reading through chord changes and playing in several modes and other scales used in jazz.

For my French Horn Students I will use the same technique books as Trumpet but learning traditional French Horn Solo repertoire, as well as Brass quintet/choir repertoire and orchestral and concert repertoire. Focus for French Horn students will be mainly on control of partials and tuning techniques.

For my Voice students I will start with good breathing technique and warm up exercises designed to get the vocal chords warmed up and get all the other muscles relaxed in order to produce great tone quality. Focus will be on intonation, and learning to use the air and support to extend the vocalists range higher and lower as well as gain power and confidence in singing. Each Vocal student will have a piece to practice or will bring a piece of their choosing in that they would like to learn and this will be used to apply the techniques learned at the beginning of lessons. Styles of singing that I sing and can teach are Classical, Jazz, Big Band and Standards, Oldies, Pop, Country, Soul, Rock, R&B, Christian Rock and Church Music and also harmonizing like in a duet style or choir/vocal ensemble setting. I will also teach performance techniques, showmanship, stage presence and the overall performance package every singer needs to have confidence while singing.

I am a classically trained musician on Trumpet, French Horn and Voice and reading music, articulations, dynamics and learning musical forms is an essential part to any performers success. I also have studied various jazz styles and improvisational techniques as well. I want to teach students the basics of good musicianship and help them to excel in learning, practicing and performing in their own selected styles of music, whether its classical music, or jazz/rock/pop/country and any other styles students are interested in.

*** Studio Equipment ***

My main teaching location is at the Ramona Music Center in downtown Ramona for students in the area. I have all items needed including music stands, CD player for play along programs as well as an upright piano.

Great, Confident and Knowledgable Instructor!

In the short amount of time I've worked with John, he has really helped me to understand the instrument, how my body and my breath effect pitch and has really helped me to overcome my concerns with picking up the Trumpet after 10 years of not playing. He relates music to me in a way that makes it understandable and encourages me to better my playing. Great instructor! Highly recommended!

I was having trouble finding an appropriate song for an audition and Tiffini used her expertise to help guide me toward a few appropriate selections. We worked on each song and now I have some solid additions to my audition repertoire. Thank you Tiffini! Erin C.

Poway, CA

About Erin

My name is Erin. I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music, with a concentration in Violin. I began studying violin at the age of six. I have performed with small chamber ensembles, orchestras, quartets, and trios. I enjoy playing for churches and weddings, and love teaching.

I began teaching beginner to advanced Violin and Viola in April of 2001 in NC. I moved to California in the fall of 2008. Since moving to California I have extended my teaching to beginner Piano and Cello also. I have taught students ages 3 to 87 how to play
and enjoy music on a personal level. My experience includes leading sectionals for middle school orchestra, organizing and instructing small ensembles, and organizing student recitals. Student recitals I arranged once or twice a year to showcase the students' growth and abilities, and to provide an opportunity to give back to family and friends whose sacrifices and support enable the students to succeed.

I teach because I love music and I believe God has given me a gift. Playing and teaching help me to use my talent for His glory. I love working with people and I love how music enables people of all ages to open up and express themselves in a positive way, no matter what life throws their way. I believe music teaches discipline, builds self esteem; helps set and achieve goals; and positively affects and enhances other curricular endeavors.

My teaching philosophy is to always have fun while learning, to set attainable goals for the student, to learn through encouragement and discipline, and to help students come to love music on a personal level. I focus on the character of each student and their goals and desires to see that the student and/or parents are satisfied. Teaching is a privilege for me that I do not take for granted.

*** Lesson Details ***
I offer half hour, forty-five minute, sixty minute lessons, or longer on a weekly basis, but I do Not offer bi-weekly lessons. My lessons begin with the fundamentals of music. I believe a firm foundation in rhythm and reading is important because a student may switch musical instruments one day and the basics are universal and necessary. I have a deep love and appreciation for music which I hope to instill in my students as well. I am strict in the sense that I like students to polish their pieces before moving on. I like to keep them focused on playing well, not just playing.

A typical lesson will begin with scales to warm up, a review of the previous week's material, and a new assignment. Students will memorize pieces, be proficient in scales and rhythms, and all the while laughing and having a great time. I am known with my students for my creative analogies and flexibility to try new things in order to adapt to the students strengths and weaknesses. My students look forward to coming to their lesson, and that is very rewarding as a teacher.

I primarily use the Suzuki method for Violin and Viola, because it offers progressive steps to mastering technique, style, and musicality. My curriculum includes the use of Winning Rhythms, Wohlfahrt studies, All for Strings Theory, Essentials for Strings, and many more beginner and advanced studies; including shifting and double stops.

I love music and I love working with people; teaching is just icing on the cake. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals and discover your talents and I hope we can learn together. I look forward to meeting you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music Stand and Keyboard

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to have their instrument, and necessary accessories ie: rosin, shoulder rest, strings, books, and music stand.

*** Specialties ***
I teach Music on Violin, Viola, and Piano, as well as beginner cello. I am very creative in my teaching methods, though I use the Suzuki Method primarily for string instruments. I believe learning should be fun. I teach all the fundamentals of music from the beginning: counting rhythm, scales, reading music, theory.

Nikola M.

San Diego, CA

About Nikola

Nikola M is locally recognized as a guitarist extraordinaire that specializes in teaching and performing progressive rock. Nikola's proven teaching methods have been acknowledged by San Diego's finest musicians and his students range from beginners to highly accomplished professionals.

In addition to stints in various rock bands, studio session work and 16 years of playing experience, Nik's development of teaching guitar was made possible by having achieved a firm musical background throughout his earlier years of performing with orchestra ensembles. As a classically trained brass player, N
ikola studied music under college guitar professor Gary Tuttle and award winning SDSC band director/guitarist Phillip S. Marcus.

Nikola's client list has included the likes of music producer and composer Toby Weiss (son of jazz legend and Guitar Institute of Technology co founder Joe Diorio) pro touring guitarist Christopher Eck of the band Masterguru, former students of guitar virtuosos Greg Howe and Joe Stump and many other serious amateur and professional musicians.

*** Lesson Details ***
Heavily influenced by legendary virtuoso guitarists Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen, Nikola's goal as a teacher is to convey his knowledge and expertise of the guitar on to others while emphasizing his own style, which exemplifies speed, intensity and finesse. While his exploits in rock guitar gymnastics continue to attract and inspire new players, Nik's approach to teaching is simplistic, yet highly effective and suitable for young beginners and adults of all ages.

Ryan C.

San Marcos, CA

About Ryan

Hi everyone! My name is Ryan C. and I am 22 year old pianist. I perform, compose, teach.... you name it! Essentially, I do all things music.

It is my personal belief that the study of music is an invaluable experience within a person's life. I believe that everyone can not only succeed at playing an instrument, but they can flourish at one and greatly enjoy the process as well. I strive to make the learning process as enjoyable as possible by creating a positive, encouraging environment within my lessons and by bringing a great attitude to every lesson.

I do my best to walk the fine li
ne between your progress and enjoyment. At our lessons, we will laugh and have a great time but cover a LOT of material.

**About Me**

My teaching style has been described as patient, gentle, yet straight forward and to the point. I have a keen eye for detail, and I know how to quickly identify "trouble-areas" to help you practice more efficiently. This unique combination of traits allows me to identify exactly what needs to be worked on in lessons, yet communicate it in a manner that is not intimidating to students.

I have been teaching for about 3 years now, and many of my students have progressed in LEAPS.

I am an honor's graduate from MiraCosta College where I received two degrees: An A.A. in Piano Performance and an A.A. in Liberal Arts.

I currently attend San Diego State University where I am majoring in Piano Performance. I later plan on obtaining a Master's in Piano Pedagogy.

I am engaged to the love of my life who I have been dating for the past 6 years.

I am friendly, approachable, organized, and always on time!

I'm excited to meet you and get started learning some music!

*** Lesson Details ***

I am looking for students who are serious about learning and have a dedication to daily practice. If you feel that you are not able to put in the time I am requesting of you, I may not be the teacher for you. With that in mind, if you DO practice consistently, you will progress quicker with me than you will with any other teacher.

I am generally looking for students aged 10 and up, although some exceptions will be made for younger students who have had prior private instruction on the piano. (I may also take on younger students if I've worked with their siblings or have given them a trial-lesson and they seemed to understand what was happening).

I teach piano lessons in a model similar to the following format.

1) Warm up with Scales / Arpeggios / Chords, etc. (As necessary)
2) Sight Reading Games / "Read Together"
3) Repertoire Coaching & Guidance

Of course, during these 3 branches of study I give guidance, feedback, and critique. Much time is spent on Repertoire rather than the other areas. That is NOT to say that Scales and Sight Reading are not important: they are ESSENTIAL, but only so much work can be done on them during a lesson.

When I teach, I try to give you the tools to succeed on your own and not be solely reliant on me. I do this through various means such as learning things in new rhythms, articulations, etc. I find that by taking this approach, my students are more likely to enjoy the learning process rather than just strive to reach difficult goals every week. This helps my students to stay motivated and have a desire to continue to learn on their own.

*** Parent Responsibilities***

With younger children, I find that it is much easier to have parents present to help keep their child focused during lessons. This may not apply to all children, but this will be at my discretion, so be prepared to stay if I find it necessary.

Let's face it: not everyone learning the piano actually wants to learn it. In my case - my mom made forced me to learn to play when I was younger. I completely understand that some children may have a hard time practicing consistently. However, I do ask that parents find time to set aside so that their children can get consistent, daily practice time.

*** Studio Equipment ***

I own a Yamaha Baby-Grand Acoustic Piano

For those who want to record their playing, I also have microphones, digital recording plugins, and other software available for use.

*Additionally, to any students interested, I can film your lesson and put it in a private folder in my Dropbox account. I find that students who film their lessons often have to review far less than those who don't film them.*

*** Travel Equipment ***

I provide repertoire, flashcards, and supplemental materials at the first lesson. While I do have a MIDI keyboard, my other digital keyboard is not portable. While teaching lessons on-call, I expect that my students will have a piano or keyboard at their house.

Fantastic teacher that has a great eye for detail and is truly passionate about the instrument and teaching whoever is willing to learn! I can honestly say I've learned more in the past month or so that I've been taking lessons than I would have in 6 months of trying to teach myself.
