Aaron D.

San Diego, CA

I can teach beginners up to intermediate, and can teach most styles, except for slap bass.

About Aaron

Hello fellow and future musicians, and thanks for checking out my profile!

To tell you a little about myself, I was exposed to music at a very young age since my dad was a musician. I first picked up the drums at the age of 5, and took piano lessons for a year when I was 6. I later played the saxophone in 4th grade, and finally discovered the guitar when I was 9. (Ironic since my dad is a guitarist and the guitar was around the house forever!) He showed me my first chords and really got me started on the instrument, and I played in several local bands in high school playing a range of music
al styles from rock, blues, funk, and reggae. I really didn't take music seriously until I was in college, and began studying under Jerry Coelho, a member of the very first graduating class of the Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, CA, and Dominic Castillo, a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, who was a student of Jerry's as well. After studying under these talented musicians, I went on to pursue my education in music and received my BA in Music from San Jose State University in 2004. I started teaching music privately during my time with Jerry and Dominic and continued to teach during college up until the present, and have taught hundreds of students since. I now live in San Diego where I teach, work as a freelance musician, and play in local funk/jazz/rock group Science Fiction Jazz and gypsy/kickstomp outfit Quel Bordel!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a very easy going, friendly individual who believes that learning music is built upon a strong relationship between teacher and student. This relationship involves good communication, honesty, open mindedness, and most importantly the desire to LEARN and have FUN. I approach teaching music by knowing and understanding the student's musical goals, and teaching fundamentals, theory, and technique through the style(s) of music that the student wants to learn. For beginners, I tend to teach basic techniques and chords through simple songs to get the student playing music as quickly as possible.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room: couches, table and TV, music stand, student can borrow instrument for first lesson, parents can sit in on lesson

*** Specialties ***
My main musical styles that I perform and teach are rock, blues, jazz, funk, R&B, and reggae. I studied jazz in college so I also have extensive knowledge of jazz theory.

My two teenage boys really enjoy Aaron's lessons and are having great success. He has a great methodical approach to learning that both makes sense, is easy to follow and practice, and is effective. The boys have fun and enjoy his patience and how he reviews what was learned and practiced from previous lessons.

Mikhail B.

San Diego, CA

Collaboration is very important to Mikhail, he sees his students also as his collaborators working together to create amazing works of sound. He spends part of the live practice lesson professing the deep intricacies and traditions of instrumental techniques, which are important for the subjective elements of music such as reading, pitch, tone, and rhythm, techniques, playing your favorite song of choice etc. and the other part of the lesson guiding the student to Compose their own original works and Recording in the recording studio, sometimes even adding other artists, and uploading to youtube and connecting the students musical practice to the real world.

About Mikhail

Mikhail is on the leading edge of Multi-Instrumental Instruction. With the help of modern technology for recording and teaching, he helps his students and friends achieve their goals instrumentally, such as Violin, Viola, Cello, and Piano. As well as, electronically via recording and producing. He uses a broad range of styles, and techniques making music simple and fun for all ages! He provides a beautiful space for an artist to flourish no matter which direction they choose to take! He has many paperback and electronic materials available to browse, as well as accessories for your instrument.
Please don't hesitate to ask him about where to purchase/rent an instrument or about possible discounts for those who need them. A lot of Mikhail's students have chosen to stay with him long-term so space may be limited, and he does have many more students which may not be indicated by his availability on this site.

In 2014 he received an SDMA Music Award for Best Americana Album on violin and cello and another nomination in a different style in the same year. Mikhail teaches lessons valued at $150 an hour, at a rate of $45* per hour (*which is subject to change). He can do this due to the high volume of clientele he is willing to handle at the moment in between undertaking movie-music projects. He follows in the lineage of Ludwig V. Beethoven who was a teacher of a teacher of Fritz Kreisler the great violinist, who was a teacher of a teacher of one of Mikhail's mentors.

Collaboration is very important to Mikhail, he sees his students also as his collaborators working together to create amazing works of sound. He spends part of the live practice lesson professing the deep intricacies and traditions of instrumental techniques, which are important for the subjective elements of music such as reading, pitch, tone, rhythm techniques, and playing your favorite song of choice with the other part of the lesson guiding the student to perform, and/or compose and arrange original and covered works with techniques in Live Recording in his recording studio. Collaborations with other artists do occur, and uploading music to youtube and connecting the students' musical practice to the real world is commonplace in Mikhail's studio.

He has also taught such modern, classical, pop, fiddle, and rock musicians whom developed into virtuosos such as Annelle Gregory, Vasi Hunton, and many more competition winners and non-competitive masters! As proof of Mikhail's competence in the art of teaching.

If you are looking for a place to flourish musically, where you won't be judged for your ever-changing musical decisions then Mikhail is the guide for you. Mikhail may bring up a story which goes like so; Stravinsky, Bartok, Gershwin, and Piazzolla flourished under the guidance of Nadia Boulanger, and they did so by nurturing the inner musical self, and making it bloom into its own unique and original artist. Music is a very personal journey, and no two musicians are ever the same. Mikhail is directly related to the great jazz pianist, Leonid Chizhik, and as mentioned before his personal viol training is traced back to Beethoven through Fritz Kreisler who was one of his teachers' teachers' teachers. These are some of the examples of his deeply rooted and priceless qualifications beyond any degree which one can ever hope to achieve. In addition, he has strong ties with the New York City Ballet where his cousin is a dancer and one of the last Russians on the squad born in the same year as George Balanchine's passing. Some have said that she is a reincarnation of the great Ballet master himself. Mikhail has worked on a ballet for the NYC ballet, which is unfinished to this very day.

Albums Mikhail has played on to take note of:

Last year (2014) Mikhail Recorded violin and cello on an album which won a San Diego Music Award voted best "Americana Album" with a group called Midnight Pine.

"Lion and the Lady" with Trent Hancock released March 2015

"Buried" with Midnight Pine winning best Americana album of 2014 in the SDMA music awards (Violin +Cello)

"Past Forward" with Blaise Christopher Guld also nominated for SDMA award (Violin+Cello)

2 Live Albums from the AUM Dome with Krista Richards (Electric Violin).

Online digital recordings with i-earth music, a corporate world music band.

Some of Mikhail's personal History:

Mikhail was born in the Soviet Union, and came over with his family in 1989...

He was taught Violin by his Russian Gypsy Uncle.

As a teen, he was became the Concertmaster violinist in his Sophomore year at Poway high school's 150 piece philharmonic orchestra conducted by the legendary Gary Horimoto playing many symphonies such as Beethoven, Mahler, and Tchaikovsky winning first place by unanimous decision in numerous festivals including a grand festival of over 100 high schools held in San Francisco.

Mikhail later joined the La Jolla Symphony chorus as a vocalist.

Mikhail holds a UCSD music composition and performance degree, from mentors including Janos Negyesy (Berlin Philharmonic concertmaster), Chinary Ung (Grawemeyer Award winner), Aleck Karis (film piano), Andrew Infanti (piano), Steven Takasugi (composition), John Fonville (microtonal composition), Edwin Harkins (polyrhythm +world music performance), and Phil Larson (voice).

During his studies at the university, Mikhail was hired as a elementary, middle, and high school orchestra director at the Creative and Performing Arts Academy Orchestra. What could be a greater learning experience than being tossed into the deep end at 17 years old?

Excelling in that profession for the last 15 years he has taught at many schools and programs including the National City School District, CCPAA in El Cajon and Clairemont... Montessori school in La Jolla, Old Town Academy, and "Camp Wings" inspiring the underprivileged youth of Barrio Logan and National City.

As a professional gigging musician in the world of performing and recording he has also done many hired gun gigs in the styles of Latin, Latin Jazz, Classical, Jazz, Gypsy, Electronic, Rock, Americana, and Pop. Been on KUSI numerous times, and has won the latest 2014 SDMA music awards.

Mikhail opened for the Eagles with his corporate band, "I-earth" during a private corporate event in Los Angeles

Some of Mikhail's compositions, and his student uploads can be found on youtube by searching his name.

Mikhail has also composed the first half of the flimscore of a short film "Picture This" for an NBC commercial by Macintosh Films.

For more info and videos please feel free to check out Mikhail's profile on Youtube.

Mikhail has passed very strict background checks with the Takelessons company, and according to his many positive reviews found on the site, he is good with kids and adults. There is a money-back guarantee, and no long-term contracts required, there is absolutely no risk in trying out this amazing teacher while the opportunity is here.

The one bad review Mikhail received was due to some confusion about parking. On their first lesson, the student didn't know where to park and tried calling Mikhail right before the lesson. However, due to the high volume of clients, Mikhail was unable to answer his phone and the student was upset. So just to clarify, there IS parking available in spaces no. 7,8, or 9.

Mikhail is a perfect fit for my son, Felix. He is talented, gentle, and flexible. He provides multiple avenues to engage Felix in the process of making & developing in music. It's obvious he is passionate about music and is genuine in wanting to spark that passion in his students. I love that he is able to teach multiple instruments and provide Felix the opportunity to explore several. He came in with experience in violin, and has since dabbled in accordion, piano, and recently ukulele. Mikhail works with adults also.

Jason M.

San Diego, CA

As a bass player in a punk rock band I learned to apply the concepts I know on the guitar over to bass and slowly started introducing intervals and right and left hand techniques that are not as common on the guitar. A few of my bass students are professionals and have applied to big name music schools after taking my class.

About Jason

TakeLessons.com Instructor since 2005, Jason M. is now available for online lessons worldwide featuring multiple-camera angles and a share screen experience leaving no stone un-turned!

Jason has been playing guitar for over 15 years and teaching music since 1996. Although trained in standard teaching methods, he has developed his own method of teaching to positively enhance the student€™s strength, dexterity, ear-training, memorization and techniques. His goal as a teacher is specifically designed to help you achieve your goals as an artist and a musician.

This year Jason was also the M
usic Director at the National Guitar Workshop Day Jams Rock Music Day Camp where students ages 7-15 came out to form bands, record original material and master their craft. He also taught beginning to advanced guitar/ vocals/ performance and songwriting as hosted a recording clinic at the end of each day.

Jason has host student showcases/charity benefits where his students were able to get on stage and show off their new talent and perform with other musicians. It wasn't mandatory though, if you were just looking to come out and support there was no pressure other than to come out and have fun.

Jason has been transcribing for guitar and bass since the age of 18 and since then has become a master of the craft including both 5 line staff and tablature, hand-crafted exercises and deconstructions to better enhance the students learning. Artists and genres that Jason has experience with range from Classic Rock, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Guns N' Roses, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Robert Johnson, Pierce the Veil, Paramore, All Time Low, Demi Lava to, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold, The White Stripes, Green Day, Old Crow Medicine Show, Taylor Swift, Mumford and Sons, Bruno Mars, Rob Zombie, John 5, Audioslave, Rage Against the Machine, Van Morrison, the Beatles, AC/DC, ZZ-Top, Bullet For My Valentine, All That Remains, Ozzy, Black Label Society, Sublime, Aerosmith, At the Drive In, Type O Negative, the Black Keys, the Pixies, the Toadies, Black Sabbath, Jason Mraz, Lady GaGa, John Mayer and Journey.

Jason attended the University of Alaska, Anchorage where his degree is in Music and Business. He is constantly continuing his education with music theory courses as well as private guitar instruction. He attends guitar workshops and seminars by artists such as John5 and Kerry King who are known as some of the worlds finest guitar players. He reviews every day from a wide range of over 1000 sources working to become a better musician and instructor.

Another nice feature that you might enjoy from one on one sessions with Jason is learning the ability to craft and record your own songs using state of the art technology that caters to your own unique personality. There are no limits!

Jason teaches all experience levels from beginner to intermediate and advanced as well as artists that are signed to labels.

Local news outlet Fox 5 did a segment with one of his students who overcame issues with ADD and depression as a result of taking guitar lessons.

His students advance quickly, some have released albums, been in Guitar World Magazine as well as its online companion and won awards for their music websites.

Lessons are scheduled to best fit to the student'€™s schedule when possible.

A very helpful and understanding teacher. Throughout the lesson, whenever I would say something he would listen patiently. All in all, great attitude for a teacher, and is willing to change his teaching methods to suit the student. I give him only 4/5 stars because I was looking for a more traditional piano class. I am not a complete beginner at piano so I was looking for a more specialized teacher. However, if I was trying to learn another instrument that he teaches, I would most definitely give him a perfect rating.

Jordan M.

San Diego, CA

Learn your favorite songs, grooves, jams and tunes! 6+ years teaching experience this instrument. The first few lessons are about establishing good ears, good time feel, and a few fundamental techniques for the left and right hand. After that, it's all about tunes and the kind of music you intend to play.
Lessons include ear training, rhythm, performance techniques, a personalized tune list, in addition to common bass practices. Optional courses of study include improvisation, music theory, composition, arranging.

About Jordan

Do you want a teacher who keeps you motivated and focused, who can show you all the skills of a well-rounded musician in a relaxed, friendly environment? I am the teacher for you! With a solid foundation in classical technique and experience as a jazz performer, we will tailor a plan for you to achieve your dreams in any style.

Jordan was born and raised in the El Centro, California where he began playing the alto sax in the elementary band program. At the age of 12, he began his study of guitar and drums, performing in several rock and ska bands around his home town and San Diego. At a
ge 14, is where he found his love for brass instruments when he took up the trombone. While in high school he became a featured soloist with the Imperial Valley College Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of the legendary trumpeter Jimmy Cannon. It was this that lead Jordan to accept the Constance Weldon Music Scholarship to attend the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL.

While performing in South Florida Jordan appeared with major acts including 10,000 Maniacs, and appeared on the Spanish television show "Calle Ocho." He also gained invaluable experience teaching in Miami public schools. His first teaching assignment was at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School where he directed 3 beginning bands, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and their highly decorated Jazz Band. Later Jordan moved into the elementary setting, teaching vocal and instrumental music for grades K-5 at Cypress Elementary.

In 2007, Jordan returned to California to pursue a music career in San Diego. He can be seen performing all over San Diego, Orange, and LA Counties in styles ranging from rock, jazz, funk, blues, hip-hop, Latin, and more. He performs primarily on trombone, piano, and guitar, but is known to pick up percussion, harmonica, and other wind instruments as well. Jordan, along with the rest of the aggressively funky cover band SuperMagnetic, were the grand prize winner of the 2010 Viejas Ultimate Music Challenge 4. In 2011, Tori Roze & The Hot Mess were nominated for a San Diego Music Award in the category of "Best Blues Artist" after the release of their first album "From The Hip." They released their second album "Turbulence" last December, and are heard regularly on local San Diego radio. This album has also been nominated for Best Pop album for the 2013 San Diego Music Awards. This spring, Jordan completed his Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University.

On stage, Jordan is a talented and versatile performer. He is known for his trombone sound and improvisational ability, as well as his positive relationship with his fellow musicians. In lessons, Jordan is energetic and creative.

*** Lesson Details ***
I enjoy teaching kids and adults of all ages. When I arrive for our first lesson, we'll start by getting to know your musical tastes and aspirations. Then we make a plan. Then we play!

Everybody's path is different, but we must start with a strong foundation in the fundamentals. After we start to establish some technique on your instrument we will explore music that suits you from a practical stand point in your development, and very importantly, stylistically. Together we will plan a curriculum that keeps you motivated toward your goals and that fits your life style.

You can expect a laid back, yet focused environment. Most of all, you can look forward to progress! Hope to see you soon.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room with large wall mirror, good lighting, with full size keyboard, weighted

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect students to provide an instrument for themselves. I also require a student to come prepared with sheet music, pencils, a binder with sheet protectors, and any books they are interested in.

*** Specialties ***
I have an extensive background in jazz bands, classical wind ensembles, and improvisation. I also currently perform in both original and cover bands on trombone, keyboard and guitar, in a range of styles including rock, reggae, Latin, and funk. I teach beginning and intermediate piano, guitar, and woodwind instruments, as well as advanced brass.

If I cannot attend our scheduled time, I'll always offer to reschedule but in that case canceling and rolling the lesson over is always an option.

Kevin F.

San Diego, CA

I've been playing the bass guitar for 12 years and have performed in bands in and around San Diego for several years. I focus on the fundamentals of electric bass performance for beginning students and then move on to lessons specifically tailored to students' needs. My lesson plans focus on song performance and use the songs as an avenue to discuss overall bass technique.

About Kevin

I have been teaching and performing in the San Diego area for many years and have used that experience to develop lessons for any level of player. My program emphasizes all around musicianship in addition to technical ability. Being a musician is more than simply learning repertoire. I help my students get the skills needed to be capable, independent performers. While studying at UCSD, I was awarded double honors for my work in Guitar Performance and Composition. In 2010, I was given awards for "Most Outstanding Graduating Senior" and "Outstanding Classical Music Performance". In January of th
is year, my latest ensemble piece "Bell Music" was given its premiere in Zurich, Switzerland by Ensemble TaG.

*** Lesson Details ***
While I am a very easy going teacher, I do require dedication of time and effort from my students. Students will learn music fundamentals (reading on the staff, elementary theory, ear training) in addition to specific instrumental technique. I also stress the practical issues of music making, from ensemble playing to upkeep of the instrument. Students who give their time to the program will quickly begin playing the music they love, while also finding a deeper appreciation for it.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in recording studio, 2 or 3 people can fit in studio, bookshelf, recording desk and guitars hung up on wall
Parents can wait in small area outside the lesson room

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect each student to have a guitar and the method book(s) I require. I will bring a guitar for demonstration as well as any supplemental materials I see fit.

*** Specialties ***
I have a degree in classical guitar performance and composition from UCSD. I was awarded honors in both fields. In addition to classical guitar, I have played jazz, pop, rock and folk music professionally for many years. I have also played banjo and sitar for many years professionally.

I have had 3 lessons with Kevin - he is incredibly good at what he does. Each lesson is substantial creating many things to work on until the next. He is very clear about what to practice, which I love, and will transcribe skill-appropriate versions of songs you want to learn. He is also specific about technique and has already me so much in very little time. I thought I might try a few teachers as I am committed to learning the guitar and want the best instructor...but I'm sold on this one, no need to look elsewhere. Also, he's super friendly!
