I'm a relaxed person with a strict teaching style. I have two critical expectations for my students.

1: I expect my students to practice everyday, with time depending on age. (10 minutes a day for 5 year old's, 20 minutes for 10 year old's, etc.) No exceptions. Lessons are a place for me to teach you, not a place to watch you practice.

2: I expect parents to participate in every lesson. You are the teacher 6 days a week, I'm only get to teach them one.

If everyone understands my expectations, students will grow and learn quickly, and have a great time doing it!

I develop a lesson plan depending on each students strengths, weaknesses, talents, and personality. No one student is identical to the next, so none will be taught the same, but everyone will follow a similar pattern.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano lessons with full keyboard. Stands, couches, and a small library of sheet music.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki style instruction for violin technique. For songwriting and performance I focus on the analysis of music to find a middle ground of emotional expression and theory. Once that middle ground is found we explore what music means to the student, and how they can use it as a tool of expression.

Kortnee is a fabulous teacher! She came into our home and taught my 9 and 11-year old daughters piano once a week. Both girls thrived and looked forward to their lessons. The progress they made in one year with Kortnee was impressive. We have moved out of state and the biggest regret is that we can't find another piano teacher like Kortnee. We miss her and her enthusiasm for teaching music. Best instructor ever!

Kortnee is amazing!!

I actually take both piano and flute from Kortnee. Her energy is contagious and she knows many styles of music. She is always ready to support what I want/need to do and can give me a tip within minutes that will help me forever. I can puzzle over a phrase or mood, and she will immediately "get it". She loves to see me have fun, and loves to help me over the rough spots.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Adam P.

Austin, TX

About Adam

I've been involved with music in some capacity pretty much from the get-go, whether as a player, a teacher, a sound engineer, or even building and repairing instruments. Music is my passion, and has been a source of many wonderful things in my life, and I hope that I can pass that on to my students.

I initially took up bass guitar when I was 10 years old, then moved on to electric guitar within a couple of years. With help from a teacher, I developed my skills simply by learning how to play my favorite songs, and this is the same approach I like to take with my own students. I eventually
went back and learned a lot of the theory behind what I was doing, but playing along with records was what made it fun and kept it interesting for me. Being a technical sort of guy, I studied audio production in college, then spent more than a decade in Chicago, working steadily as an engineer, both in studio, and in live sound reinforcement. The cold winters there broke me, though, so I made my way to the warmer, more relaxed environs of Austin.

In 2004 I began learning to play pedal steel guitar, and it quickly became my primary instrument as I found myself playing out regularly with several Chicago-based country and western outfits, as well as rock bands that were looking to add a very unique sound to their mix. It certainly isn't the most common instrument around, but it's a ton of fun to play, and I get very excited about showing it to others.

In addition to teaching guitar and steel guitar, I operate my own piano tuning and repair service, AP Piano Service. Ironically, I don't actually play piano, but I've got great ears and a knack for fixing things, so if you've got a piano sitting around the house in need of a tuning, well, that's an added bonus.

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether you're starting from the very beginning, or if you already play a bit and want to brush up and learn something new, I'm happy to teach students of all abilities and ages. My lessons are tailored to fit each student's current skill level, yet still be challenging. At the end of the day, I want my students to have fun while they're playing, and then to feel that they've accomplished something great when it comes time to put down their instruments.

I start beginners off with the basic fundamentals, and a few exercises just to get their fingers moving. You gotta crawl before you can walk, right? Very quickly, we move on to some simple chord shapes and apply them by learning songs that the student knows and loves. From there we progress at whatever pace is comfortable for the student, gradually adding more chords and progressions, learning riffs and lead lines, etc... Along the way, I like to pepper lessons with a bit of basic music theory, just so that students can get a little better grasp of what they're doing and how it all works. By no means does that have to involve endless hours spent practicing scales. That's all great for advanced musicians, but I feel that learning to play songs is far more productive for less experienced students. Music is like any other language, and I think it's fair to say that most people first learn to speak before they learn the rules of spelling and grammar.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have numerous acoustic and electric guitars in my home studio, as well as amplifiers, cables, etc. Students are welcome to use my equipment, if they choose.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Depending on the student and the styles of music that we're studying, I either bring along my own acoustic guitar or an electric and a small practice amplifier, along with the necessary cables, picks, and other accessories.

*** Specialties ***
Classic and modern Rock 'n' Roll, Pop, Country and Western, Folk, Lap Steel, Pedal Steel.

In addition to regular 6-string guitar, I teach 6, 8, or 10-string lap steel and pedal steel.

Great teacher!

My 9 year old daughter is taking guitar lessons with Adam. She looks forward to her lessons and enjoys them. Adam is very reliable and comes to our house on time. I have seen her progress very quickly and love the way he clearly explains things to her. As she puts it "Adam makes guitar learning fun."

Great instructor.

I enjoy my lessons with Adam, it is clear that he has a passion for music. We go over the basics, but he also includes songs that I want to learn. He is professional, and his home studio is comfortable, with plenty of guitars to try out. Of course, his two cats are named after country stars, Patsy and Loretta. I am comfortable asking questions, as a student that needs a lot of explanation, he is patient and creative in making sure that I understand the aspects of a tune. I highly recommend Adam.

I have performed at NAMM while endorsing Dan'l Guitars and I have performed at SXSW since I was 16. I am a Berklee College of Music alu
mni, and I am a signed Warner Bros. Records recording artist.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have been teaching professionally for 7 years and have given private and group lessons to hundreds of students. I emphasize on building a specific lesson plan to fit the students and their needs. I am a firm believer in that learning should be smooth and relaxed, so I focus on combining a fun and educational environment to allow the student's inner musician to truly come out and breathe. The student and I will work on building a relationship between the feeling of music and how it all fits together. Lessons include learning songs, music theory, instrument technique, music history, and instrument maintenance.
The student could be a musical genius, but without the proper technique to execute the ideas, the student will hit a brick wall. Likewise, the student may have amazing technique, but without the proper music education, the ideas will take longer to materialize. I am here to help the student avoid those brick walls and have fun learning and playing music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I am endorsed by Schecter Guitar Research, but I own many beautiful models from other companies. They consist of a 1954 Fender Stratocaster (The Relic), Epiphone Les Paul, Ibanez Voltage acoustic, 1943 spanish classical, J. Reynolds Stratocaster copy, Martin Stinger SBX Bass, Yamaha spanish classical, Dan'l Pfazer, Dan'l Muse-XY, Epiphone Mandobird, Schecter Diamond Series Hellraiser FR, Schecter Diamond Series Hellraiser C-7 FR, Schecter Diamond Series Hellraiser C-8, and an Agile Intrepid 925.

I play on Kustom, Peavey, Fender, Roland, and Vox amps and I have a Boss GT-100 multiple effects processor, BOSS GT-8 multiple effects processor, BOSS ME-50 multiple effects pedal, Morpheus Droptune, BBE Boosta Grande, FAB Chorus, BOSS FS-6, and a Jim Dunlop Cry Baby Classic Wah Pedal.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide amplification and cables provided their instrument is electric. Otherwise, I typically expect the student to provide their own instrument. I do accept some exceptions.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching instrument technique, music theory and music history, as well as several different styles. What I have taught in the past includes rock, blues, country, jazz, metal, flamenco, and pop.

Amazing Teacher!

I started taking lessons with Alex after previously taking them with a different teacher. It turns out that my technique was flawed and Alex was quick to correct it. After working with him for just a few lessons, I was already seeing improvement. Alex is very patient and helpful. I never feel embarrassed to play in front of him as I did with my previous teacher. I definitely recommend Alex!

The Perfect Teacher!

Alex got me really into the passion of music, all the while fulfilling my desire to really learn the guitar. He approaches every lesson with complete patience and guidance. I am now able to learn songs on my own, understand the theory behind chord changes and scales, and I find the beauty in knowing what music really is!

I finally understood music!

Alex helped me reach my goals as both a guitarist and composer. He took me from having no idea about how scales are made and their use. I now play lead guitar in a rock band and I actually understand what I'm doing on stage and in the industry.
