Bethany P.

Austin, TX

About Bethany

I started playing the violin when I was 7. I had the best violin teacher, and she took me through the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, grades 1-7, and theory. When I went to college I studied under Charles Mutter (then leader of Edinburgh's string quartet) and Tristan Gurney - both very accomplished and well-known violinists in the UK. I hope to bring what I have learned from these three to my students, with my own flare. I have played in a few orchestras - West Dunbartonshire Senior Schools orchestra, Glasgow Senior Schools String Orchestra, Clydebank High School's string ensem
ble, choir and windband, and the University of Edinburgh Napier's Chamber Orchestra. Orchestras are where I learned to have a passion for music and to really appreciate what being a musician was all about.

In around Austin I sit in regularly with acts such as Gashcat (Kyle Craft) and Wild Bill, and play in a band called My Russian Princess where I get to not only play my violin, but sing and play a synthesizer. I also perform in a duet with Meggan Carney where I sing harmonies and play accompanying violin parts.

I am not an uptight teacher, but I do believe in working hard to achieve success. I like to give my students a music notebook with goals listed in it, so that they know what I expect them to have tried to grasp for the next lesson. For beginners, I usually like to work through Essential Elements for violin as it is simple to understand, and has some familiar tunes and nursery rhymes which are easy to pick up. As the student grows, we will tackle more difficult pieces. I mostly teach classical and fiddle music, but have branched out to jazz, rock and some country when specifically asked to.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Front Room: couch, coffee table, rocking chair, one cat, various instruments and accessories (organ, drum kit, guitars, ukuleles, amps, mics/stands etc), parents can sit in on lesson, or on patio in the back yard.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide books to be purchased, and bring my violin and music stand. They will provide their own violin.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Baroque, fiddle.

My daughter is learning to play the violin. Bethany is extremely patient, kind and paces the lessons nicely. We'll continue to take lessons with Bethany.

I'm a relaxed person with a strict teaching style. I have two critical expectations for my students.

1: I expect my students to practice everyday, with time depending on age. (10 minutes a day for 5 year old's, 20 minutes for 10 year old's, etc.) No exceptions. Lessons are a place for me to teach you, not a place to watch you practice.

2: I expect parents to participate in every lesson. You are the teacher 6 days a week, I'm only get to teach them one.

If everyone understands my expectations, students will grow and learn quickly, and have a great time doing it!

I develop a lesson plan depending on each students strengths, weaknesses, talents, and personality. No one student is identical to the next, so none will be taught the same, but everyone will follow a similar pattern.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano lessons with full keyboard. Stands, couches, and a small library of sheet music.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki style instruction for violin technique. For songwriting and performance I focus on the analysis of music to find a middle ground of emotional expression and theory. Once that middle ground is found we explore what music means to the student, and how they can use it as a tool of expression.

Kortnee is a fabulous teacher! She came into our home and taught my 9 and 11-year old daughters piano once a week. Both girls thrived and looked forward to their lessons. The progress they made in one year with Kortnee was impressive. We have moved out of state and the biggest regret is that we can't find another piano teacher like Kortnee. We miss her and her enthusiasm for teaching music. Best instructor ever!

Kortnee is amazing!!

I actually take both piano and flute from Kortnee. Her energy is contagious and she knows many styles of music. She is always ready to support what I want/need to do and can give me a tip within minutes that will help me forever. I can puzzle over a phrase or mood, and she will immediately "get it". She loves to see me have fun, and loves to help me over the rough spots.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Mariam H.

Austin, TX

About Mariam

Have you always dreamed about learning to play violin with a professional and passionate teacher? Then I would like to meet you!

My name is Mariam and I am a professional musician/violin teacher with a Master's Degree from the University of Texas in Austin. I have lived and taught violin all over the world, worked in the Austin Waldorf School and in the Redeemer Lutheran School in Austin among other places. For the last 5 years I was a part of a String Faculty as a Violin Professor at the Mahidol University in Thailand. Of course, all those years I kept performing and making music as a solo
ist, chamber and orchestra player.

Being a musician, I got to travel and to live all over the world. During my vast experience in many countries on three continents I have come across all kinds of people interested in music. Beginners and advanced, professionals and amateurs, adults and children. Some of them felt attracted to it by a yet undiscovered force, some searched for the last pieces of mosaic that would complete the whole picture of their lives. To some of them, music has finally given answers while to others it posed even more complicated questions. But, as Ludwig van Beethoven has put it, "Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy."

I believe music has a uniting power over us all, how ever different we might seem at first. A good performance is a reminder of an incredibly benevolent guiding force behind. And sparkling eyes of a child (or adult), proud of his first major achievement on this path are totally worth hours of hard work and even occasional frustration.

That's why in my teaching I try to guide and nourish what Nature has given, sharing with my students knowledge and appreciation of this wonderful art. It is my belief that even if one has a rough day, once a person enters this incredible world of music, he or she will always be truly happy.

"If you look deep enough you will see music; the heart of nature being everywhere music."
Thomas Carlyle

Let the music begin!

Wonderful exciting teacher

I have had several lessons now and have not only learned a lot, but enjoyed my lesson time. Mariam is very fun and pushes me to try new things while keeping me reviewing the old.
I get a high quality teacher in my home every week that wants me to improve as much as I want to improve my violin skills. After just two lessons people I have played for have commented on just how much I have improved lately.

Stephanie is very patient and gives clear instructions that are easy for my child to follow and execute again on her own as she practices during the week. She genuinely cares for my child as an individual and has built a sweet friendship with her. My daughter always looks forward to her lessons and Stephanie has helped her make great progress in a short amount of time.
