Allen D.

San Diego, CA

About Allen

Hello! My name is Allen and I've been playing guitar for 13 years, and teaching for the past 8. I've been performing and writing since the age of 16 with bands in many styles. I'm originally from Santa Maria, CA, and I obtained my knowledge of music theory, performance, and songwriting skills from taking private lessons in the central coast at a place called Coelho's Academy of Music. Our head instructor, Jerry Coelho, was a student of the late Howard Roberts and was one of the first graduating students to who helped to establish Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), currently known as The Mus
icians Institute. After dedicating 4 years of private lessons under Jerry and his other top instructors, my hard work payed off and I was given the opportunity take students of my own. For the following two years, I've managed to consistently teach 40 students per week. I decided to move forward and take my musical experience with me to San Diego, where I currently teach, write, record, and perform my music with others who have similar goals and aspirations. I am playing with three bands at this moment. Quel Bordel, Science Fiction Jazz, and Foreign Film. These bands have given me the opportunity to perform with local and big named artists such as D.J. Artistic, Gary Wilson of Stones Throw Records, The Aristocrats, Terry Bozzio, Alan Holdsworth, and Tony Levin. As a teacher, I'm here to help you with where you want to be with guitar. Whether it's rock, pop, funk, hip hop, reggae, jazz, blues, indie, folk, and country, I can help you with the technical and theoretical side of things.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal- To get you to become better than me. I find myself as an easy going teacher, and can provide that push when I see students getting more engaged in their lessons. Students are expected to have their own copy of my recommended method books. I emphasize heavy chord vocabulary and steady rhythm. I believe that in order to be a good lead player, you would have to be a great rhythm player. As we develop technique, you can expect me to incorporate theory as to maintain an even share of the HOW's and WHY's. Moreover, expect to DO something with our lessons. Repetition is the mother of learning, and sometimes it comes down to the idea of 'monkey see, monkey do' before we can have in depth conversations about the application of your lessons in real situations. To me, music is very creative. So I'm a big believer on improvisation with both chords and scales. I believe in practical application when learning the songs you want to learn. So every student will have a unique way of learning the fundamentals only necessary to their personal goals.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Two small practice amps, cables, method books (personal copies), extra picks, extra guitar, music stand, blank sheet music/tabs for notes, extra strings, music stand, metronome, tuner

*** Travel Equipment ***
Music stand, extra guitar (if needed), blank staff/tab paper, tuner, metronome, battery powered amp, cables, extra strings (if needed), picks

*** Specialties ***
I primarily use Hal Leonard method books for beginners when it comes to reading and basic technique. For those who want to learn at the intermediate/advance level, I use the book called Jazz and Pop Guitar (chords and progressions) and Scales and Modes in the Beginning which can cover all aspects of chord theory and improvisation. I model my curriculum off of my prior lesson plans from my teachers ( based off of Berklee and GIT) My genres specialize in rock, funk, jazz, indie rock, folk, country, blues, pop

Whether an adult or child, my students learn a great deal even in the first lesson. From that point on there is an abundance of knowledge that can be shared to help them become a better singer. Once they have started to learn, it is up to them to put the time and energy into training their voice. Depending on the amount of time they have to practice and their goals, lessons are taught with the needs of the individual student in mind. I find teaching with patience and a sense of humor at times can help the student feel at ease and have fun while learning.

By far the most wonderful singing instructor I've ever encountered. Salli is very thorough in her teaching but she also makes it VERY FUN! Always encouraging at every lesson which in turn nurtured confidence within myself and my voice. Salli truly cares about the success of each and every one of her students. Always willing to go beyond the call! One instance of this great example was an evening of Karaoke. Salli knew I was deathly afraid of being in front of an audience so to build up my confidence she decided to join me on stage. WOW!!! Studying with Salli goes beyond the Teacher-Student relationship. I also gained a life long friend. I can't thank her enough and am forever grateful to her for always believing in me.

I have been singing since I was a child however never had any proper vocal training until I started taking vocal lessons with Salli. She taught me many helpful techniques with singing from breathing mechanics to how to accurately mouth the words I am singing to project my notes better as well as many other techniques. Over the years I have used her techniques when recording and performing and I have seen my vocal abilities enhance and become way better than they have ever been. Salli is very professional and very knowledgeable in music and singing, and also a very sweet and sympathetic instructor. She really wants to help you perfect your art and will make sure it does happen, as I have seen it happen with me! She is also very patient and you can always discuss with her what you need to work on. I HIGHLY recommend Salli as your musical instructor, she truly enjoys her craft and loves to help her students.

Francis R.

San Diego, CA

You wrote a great song, you play it to yourself for two hours after school or work every day, and finally bring your guitar or keyboard to an open mic night at the local coffee house. You freeze up, your voice cracks, your hands shake, and... you mess up. Familiar? I've been there too, and it doesn't happen to me anymore. There are ways around it, let's work on it!

On a more advanced level, we would be working on subtleties of body movement, the importance of gesture in music, singing into a microphone, how to plan or change your performance based on the audience and the venue, how to get your band or duo to function as a unit, or simple things like why your guitar amplifier doesn't sound the same in your bedroom as it does in a dingy downtown club.

About Francis

Hi everyone! I'm a hard-working musician with a background in live performance, songwriting, composition, and home recording. I want to help you perform the music you love, whether you're playing to your family, your webcam, or a 15,000 seat arena. I have been teaching private music lessons since 2007.

I am a graduate of UCSD, where I completed my bachelor's degree in music theory and composition. I have taken years of private lessons, played bass, guitar, and mandolin in local and touring bands, and released three albums of original music. I want to make your goals accessible.

*** Les
son Details ***
I focus on making lessons fun for my students. I emphasize the importance of practicing on your own and building confidence by performing live and/or writing your own songs. I love to help people get better at sounding like themselves.

During lessons from me, you can expect to play, sing, clap your hands, and become completely immersed in the music you love. Whether your goal is to perform in front of an audience, record albums, or just play for fun in your living room, I'll help you make that happen.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room, seating available, street parking.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I only teach students who provide their own instrument. I am willing to provide a loaner guitar for the week if a student's instrument needs to be repaired or is not accessible for any reason. I also provide homework when necessary :)

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching confidence in performance practices, technique, singing and playing, and good microphone habits for singing, speaking, and recording, and songwriting. I teach based on student needs, and I find each student benefits from a different curriculum.

Francis has been just fantastic as my first ever singing teacher. He completely made me feel at ease, provided me with material to practice in between lessons, and is just a genuinely nice guy to be around. Kevin F.

San Diego, CA

I received my Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from UCSD with an emphasis on Guitar Performance and Composition. As a composer, performer and conductor I've developed an intimate knowledge of many of the orchestral instruments and their specific technical concerns. I have performed recitals with programming ranging from the Early Baroque, to High Classical to Contemporary Avante-Garde and can provide meaningful feedback to any level of student on many different instruments across a variety of styles.

About Kevin

I have been teaching and performing in the San Diego area for many years and have used that experience to develop lessons for any level of player. My program emphasizes all around musicianship in addition to technical ability. Being a musician is more than simply learning repertoire. I help my students get the skills needed to be capable, independent performers. While studying at UCSD, I was awarded double honors for my work in Guitar Performance and Composition. In 2010, I was given awards for "Most Outstanding Graduating Senior" and "Outstanding Classical Music Performance". In January of th
is year, my latest ensemble piece "Bell Music" was given its premiere in Zurich, Switzerland by Ensemble TaG.

*** Lesson Details ***
While I am a very easy going teacher, I do require dedication of time and effort from my students. Students will learn music fundamentals (reading on the staff, elementary theory, ear training) in addition to specific instrumental technique. I also stress the practical issues of music making, from ensemble playing to upkeep of the instrument. Students who give their time to the program will quickly begin playing the music they love, while also finding a deeper appreciation for it.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in recording studio, 2 or 3 people can fit in studio, bookshelf, recording desk and guitars hung up on wall
Parents can wait in small area outside the lesson room

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect each student to have a guitar and the method book(s) I require. I will bring a guitar for demonstration as well as any supplemental materials I see fit.

*** Specialties ***
I have a degree in classical guitar performance and composition from UCSD. I was awarded honors in both fields. In addition to classical guitar, I have played jazz, pop, rock and folk music professionally for many years. I have also played banjo and sitar for many years professionally.

I love Amelia! She lets each student learn at their own pace through their own choice of song. Absolutely no required repertoire, just suggestions on what a student can work on. Amelia may want a student to practice vocal runs; that student can pick ANY song from ANY genre so long as it contains the technique. Her lessons are tailored to each student!
