You wrote a great song, you play it to yourself for two hours after school or work every day, and finally bring your guitar or keyboard to an open mic night at the local coffee house. You freeze up, your voice cracks, your hands shake, and... you mess up. Familiar? I've been there too, and it doesn't happen to me anymore. There are ways around it, let's work on it!
On a more advanced level, we would be working on subtleties of body movement, the importance of gesture in music, singing into a microphone, how to plan or change your performance based on the audience and the venue, how to get your band or duo to function as a unit, or simple things like why your guitar amplifier doesn't sound the same in your bedroom as it does in a dingy downtown club.
I received my Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from UCSD with an emphasis on Guitar Performance and Composition. As a composer, performer and conductor I've developed an intimate knowledge of many of the orchestral instruments and their specific technical concerns. I have performed recitals with programming ranging from the Early Baroque, to High Classical to Contemporary Avante-Garde and can provide meaningful feedback to any level of student on many different instruments across a variety of styles.
I've been a professional performer for 12 years, performing both as a band leader and as a hired professional with a number of groups. Lessons focused on preparation for performance can cover a variety of topics, from repertoire selection to leading a band, etc. and will be tailored to the needs of each individual student. Wherever they may be on your musical journey, I love to help students take the next step toward their performance goals.
