Hello! My name is Allen and I've been playing guitar for 13 years, and teaching for the past 8. I've been performing and writing since the age of 16 with bands in many styles. I'm originally from Santa Maria, CA, and I obtained my knowledge of music theory, performance, and songwriting skills from taking private lessons in the central coast at a place called Coelho's Academy of Music. Our head instructor, Jerry Coelho, was a student of the late Howard Roberts and was one of the first graduating students to who helped to establish Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), currently known as The Musicians Institute. After dedicating 4 years of private lessons under Jerry and his other top instructors, my hard work payed off and I was given the opportunity take students of my own. For the ...
I have years of experience performing live music, so I can teach students to have the confidence in performing in front of people.
Hello fellow and future musicians, and thanks for checking out my profile! To tell you a little about myself, I was exposed to music at a very young age since my dad was a musician. I first picked up the drums at the age of 5, and took piano lessons for a year when I was 6. I later played the saxophone in 4th grade, and finally discovered the guitar when I was 9. (Ironic since my dad is a guitarist and the guitar was around the house forever!) He showed me my first chords and really got me started on the instrument, and I played in several local bands in high school playing a range of musical styles from rock, blues, funk, and reggae. I really didn't take music seriously until I was in college, and began studying under Jerry Coelho, a member of the very first graduating class of the ...

You wrote a great song, you play it to yourself for two hours after school or work every day, and finally bring your guitar or keyboard to an open mic night at the local coffee house. You freeze up, your voice cracks, your hands shake, and... you mess up. Familiar? I've been there too, and it doesn't happen to me anymore. There are ways around it, let's work on it!
On a more advanced level, we would be working on subtleties of body movement, the importance of gesture in music, singing into a microphone, how to plan or change your performance based on the audience and the venue, how to get your band or duo to function as a unit, or simple things like why your guitar amplifier doesn't sound the same in your bedroom as it does in a dingy downtown club.

I want to help you perform the music you love, whether you're playing to your family, your webcam, or a 15,000 seat arena. I have been teaching private music lessons since 2007. I am a graduate of UCSD, where I completed my bachelor's degree in music theory and composition. I want to make your goals accessible. *** Lesson Details *** I focus on making lessons fun for my students. I received my Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from UCSD with an emphasis on Guitar Performance and Composition. As a composer, performer and conductor I've developed an intimate knowledge of many of the orchestral instruments and their specific technical concerns. I have performed recitals with programming ranging from the Early Baroque, to High Classical to Contemporary Avante-Garde and can provide meaningful feedback to any level of student on many different instruments across a variety of styles.
I have been teaching and performing in the San Diego area for many years and have used that experience to develop lessons for any level of player. My program emphasizes all around musicianship in addition to technical ability. Being a musician is more than simply learning repertoire. I help my students get the skills needed to be capable, independent performers. While studying at UCSD, I was awarded double honors for my work in Guitar Performance and Composition. In 2010, I was given awards for "Most Outstanding Graduating Senior" and "Outstanding Classical Music Performance". In January of this year, my latest ensemble piece "Bell Music" was given its premiere in Zurich, Switzerland by Ensemble TaG. *** Lesson Details *** While I am a very easy going teacher, I do require dedication ...
The best way to learn music performance is by frequent performing in different settings, for small and large audiences, and then evaluating yourself with a professional expert so you can improve for the next performance. Many students come to me because they want to audition for a show and need some help preparing for the audition or performance. I help select the song, musical accompaniment, or track. In lessons, we refine the song through learning the notes/melody, expression and feeling, and staging. In my opinion, performing for others helps you learn about yourself as a musician and is where you touch audiences with your unique voice and gift. Making music for yourself is important for your own fulfillment and happiness, but sharing your song with others is a special gift that only you can give.
I see my role as a teacher to be like a guide to my students, helping them to navigate their own musical path. I teach key concepts through a variety of strategies and methods so that I can reach each student in his or her strength or interest. This includes class instruction and discussion, small group discussions and projects, and individual projects and reflection. I believe that teaching the fundamentals of music are most important because the basics empower the student to learn. When students have mastered the basics, then they can go on to achieve their personal best. My classroom culture is based on respect and care for one another, which starts with me, the teacher, setting the example and modeling what that looks like for the students.I believe is setting high standards that ...
