I just started receiving instruction from Julian. I'm a complete beginner, age 51. I've only had 2 lessons so far, and am comfortable. He's to the point, and makes sure I comprehend something each time I've been to my appointments. He sends my homework to an email account. For all the rockers out there, man, this dude can jam out on bass guitar - I listened to him roll off a few Rush licks the other night.

Jim is a great guy and excellent teacher, but was not up to date on the oldies instrumentals and that was my main profile request. I did learn things from him in other areas that will help me with other songs. Thank you

very unprofessional. I was not late, but instead went to the wrong apartment. Instead of asking if I was running late or got lost, he sent me a riddle about being late: "To be early is to be one time. To be on time is to be late. To be late is to be in trouble." I'm an adult, I don't need to be told i'm in trouble. Rubbed me the wrong way.

Cristina H.

San Antonio, TX

About Cristina

Hello! My name is Cristina and I have been playing drums since I was a child. After graduating high school, I decided to continue to pursue music. For the past 4 years I have been studying Percussion and Drums, first at the University of Houston, and presently, and the University of Texas at San Antonio with plans to finish my Bachelor of Music degree. I specialize in drumset, and percussion instruments such as marimba, snare drum, vibraphone, etc. I also am able to teach marching band percussion and drumline instruments. Along with teaching, I am a gigging musician with great versatility and
experience in many genres of music. Not only am I able to teach basic fundamentals of music such as technique, reading music, styles, etc., I can make learning to be a great musician a very enjoyable process!!

*** Lesson Details ***
My style of teaching is very relaxed and patient. I use real word analogies and use a student's personal interests to help make music easier to understand. I take the time to get to know my students' personalities and interests in order to accommodate their needs. My curriculum would consist of understanding drums/percussion instruments, rhythms/styles/timing, technique, music notation, and performance manners. After 3-6 months of lessons, students will know the basics of what I have listed above. I believe that if you have patience with yourself, that you can achieve any kind of goal. All it takes is a good teacher, faith in yourself, and practice!

*** Studio Equipment ***
2 drumsets, PA

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have various mallets and sticks. I can bring a small drum kit. I expect my students to provide their own mallets and sticks, along with EARPLUGS, and a folder for all of your papers.

*** Specialties ***
Rock, Jazz, Pop, Hip Hop, Country, Tejano/Folk. Very Familiar with most genres.

Cristina is knowledgeable, patient and a great teacher for me. I'm really excited about the progress I've made in just 3 short weeks and I know I want to go as far as I can in drumming.

I'm normally self-conscious and nervous about learning new skills, esp if I feel like I'm not able to be GREAT at it right away. But Cristina put me at ease right away and has helped me to be laid back and patient. That's a big deal.

She's an awesome drummer too.

Andrew F.

San Antonio, TX

About Andrew

I have experience tutoring students as well as working with people individually and in groups, as an undergrad Psychology intern, a cognitive skills trainer, and a counseling student. As an undergrad intern, I worked with elementary school children as a tutor and a mentor. As a counseling student, I have worked with various populations, from grade school students (making healthier choices) to adults (stress, anxiety, career decisions, bereavement, etc.) to older adults in hospice care, as well as facilitate groups with individuals suffering from a mental illness. Also, I teach a beginner ukule
le class at a community education center. Through my personal, academic and vocational experiences, I have gained insight about the process of working with people, educationally, musically and through goal setting (counseling and coaching). I will be completing my master's in Community Counseling in the fall of 2015 with an internship as an academic coach at a local university.

My approach is one that is peculiar to each of my students. As an auto-didactic learner, I believe that everyone has their own way of learning. Therefore, I use an approach that I feel works well for each of my students, with regard to whether a student thinks abstractly or concretely, for example. With so many possible goals, it is important to be flexible to work with each student's learning style. I present concepts with the idea that experience is the key to learning. I strive to create a warm atmosphere that allows students to feel comfortable with making mistakes, with making progress and with being themselves. I see the process as a wonderful opportunity for students to gain knowledge and awareness and to personally develop.

With my patience, positive energy, personal insight and passion for working with people, I help my students work towards progress while having a fun time doing it. I help my students create meaning by keeping the focus of the lessons based on a given student's interests and concerns.

Two important things: I strive to maintain a positive collaboration with my students so that learning and development may occur. I believe this is one of the most important parts of the process. It is essential for students to share the same commitment. Also: I promote the idea of Soul. To me, Soul is any sincere display of passion. With Soul, we perform in a most genuine and graceful way. I personally believe that whether one is playing the piano, writing an essay, singing, giving a speech or anything (necessarily peaceful), one should do it with Soul.

Personal Development Coaching: Using my insight gained as a counseling student and my aforementioned experience working with people, I am happy to offer my personal development coaching service. It focuses on providing a safe and understanding atmosphere for one to reflect, process and work towards making personal changes (e.g. career, anxiety management, lifestyle) from an existential perspective. If interested, please, see the details I have provided under Life Coaching. I work with grade school students and adults (including college students).

My approach to personal development coaching is based on a therapeutic intervention called Gestalt Therapy (GT). The underlying idea of GT is that awareness is the key to change. My approach looks to help the individual gain self-actualization. This allows one to discern where such things as anxiety, unhappiness, ambivalence, etc. stem from. I believe that it is important for every human being to go through such a process so that peace and awareness within brings peace and awareness to the outer world. I am inspired by and influenced by the ideas of Carl Jung and Carl Rogers. I help facilitate the process in a genuinely humane, empathetic and professional manner.

I am absolutely loyal to the idea of confidentiality; therefore, I ensure that information of anybody I work with is not at risk of being shared with a third party.

Lastly, I am open to: Going beyond my travel radius, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; working with multiple students, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; and meeting at a public place that is convenient, if it is preferred.

I mentioned everything that is above so that it may be known and understood. Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about any services I provide, my approach or anything!
