I just started receiving instruction from Julian. I'm a complete beginner, age 51. I've only had 2 lessons so far, and am comfortable. He's to the point, and makes sure I comprehend something each time I've been to my appointments. He sends my homework to an email account. For all the rockers out there, man, this dude can jam out on bass guitar - I listened to him roll off a few Rush licks the other night.

Jim is a great guy and excellent teacher, but was not up to date on the oldies instrumentals and that was my main profile request. I did learn things from him in other areas that will help me with other songs. Thank you

Cristina is knowledgeable, patient and a great teacher for me. I'm really excited about the progress I've made in just 3 short weeks and I know I want to go as far as I can in drumming.

I'm normally self-conscious and nervous about learning new skills, esp if I feel like I'm not able to be GREAT at it right away. But Cristina put me at ease right away and has helped me to be laid back and patient. That's a big deal.

She's an awesome drummer too.

Andrew F.

San Antonio, TX

About Andrew

I have experience tutoring students as well as working with people individually and in groups, as an undergrad Psychology intern, a cognitive skills trainer, and a counseling student. As an undergrad intern, I worked with elementary school children as a tutor and a mentor. As a counseling student, I have worked with various populations, from grade school students (making healthier choices) to adults (stress, anxiety, career decisions, bereavement, etc.) to older adults in hospice care, as well as facilitate groups with individuals suffering from a mental illness. Also, I teach a beginner ukule
le class at a community education center. Through my personal, academic and vocational experiences, I have gained insight about the process of working with people, educationally, musically and through goal setting (counseling and coaching). I will be completing my master's in Community Counseling in the fall of 2015 with an internship as an academic coach at a local university.

My approach is one that is peculiar to each of my students. As an auto-didactic learner, I believe that everyone has their own way of learning. Therefore, I use an approach that I feel works well for each of my students, with regard to whether a student thinks abstractly or concretely, for example. With so many possible goals, it is important to be flexible to work with each student's learning style. I present concepts with the idea that experience is the key to learning. I strive to create a warm atmosphere that allows students to feel comfortable with making mistakes, with making progress and with being themselves. I see the process as a wonderful opportunity for students to gain knowledge and awareness and to personally develop.

With my patience, positive energy, personal insight and passion for working with people, I help my students work towards progress while having a fun time doing it. I help my students create meaning by keeping the focus of the lessons based on a given student's interests and concerns.

Two important things: I strive to maintain a positive collaboration with my students so that learning and development may occur. I believe this is one of the most important parts of the process. It is essential for students to share the same commitment. Also: I promote the idea of Soul. To me, Soul is any sincere display of passion. With Soul, we perform in a most genuine and graceful way. I personally believe that whether one is playing the piano, writing an essay, singing, giving a speech or anything (necessarily peaceful), one should do it with Soul.

Personal Development Coaching: Using my insight gained as a counseling student and my aforementioned experience working with people, I am happy to offer my personal development coaching service. It focuses on providing a safe and understanding atmosphere for one to reflect, process and work towards making personal changes (e.g. career, anxiety management, lifestyle) from an existential perspective. If interested, please, see the details I have provided under Life Coaching. I work with grade school students and adults (including college students).

My approach to personal development coaching is based on a therapeutic intervention called Gestalt Therapy (GT). The underlying idea of GT is that awareness is the key to change. My approach looks to help the individual gain self-actualization. This allows one to discern where such things as anxiety, unhappiness, ambivalence, etc. stem from. I believe that it is important for every human being to go through such a process so that peace and awareness within brings peace and awareness to the outer world. I am inspired by and influenced by the ideas of Carl Jung and Carl Rogers. I help facilitate the process in a genuinely humane, empathetic and professional manner.

I am absolutely loyal to the idea of confidentiality; therefore, I ensure that information of anybody I work with is not at risk of being shared with a third party.

Lastly, I am open to: Going beyond my travel radius, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; working with multiple students, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; and meeting at a public place that is convenient, if it is preferred.

I mentioned everything that is above so that it may be known and understood. Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about any services I provide, my approach or anything!

***Capable of working with students who have special needs.

I have a passion for the performing arts; every aspect of it. From learning a piece to committing it to memory.

Twelve Benefits of Music Education
Music Education Advocacy Resources on amazon.com

1. Early musical training helps develop b
rain areas involved in language and reasoning. It is thought that brain development continues for many years after birth. Recent studies have clearly indicated that musical training physically develops the part of the left side of the brain known to be involved with processing language, and can actually wire the brain’s circuits in specific ways. Linking familiar songs to new information can also help imprint information on young minds.

2. There is also a causal link between music and spatial intelligence (the ability to perceive the world accurately and to form mental pictures of things). This kind of intelligence, by which one can visualize various elements that should go together, is critical to the sort of thinking necessary for everything from solving advanced mathematics problems to being able to pack a book-bag with everything that will be needed for the day.

3. Students of the arts learn to think creatively and to solve problems by imagining various solutions, rejecting outdated rules and assumptions. Questions about the arts do not have only one right answer.

4. Recent studies show that students who study the arts are more successful on standardized tests such as the SAT. They also achieve higher grades in high school.

5. A study of the arts provides children with an internal glimpse of other cultures and teaches them to be empathetic towards the people of these cultures. This development of compassion and empathy, as opposed to development of greed and a “me first” attitude, provides a bridge across cultural chasms that leads to respect of other races at an early age.

6. Students of music learn craftsmanship as they study how details are put together painstakingly and what constitutes good, as opposed to mediocre, work. These standards, when applied to a student’s own work, demand a new level of excellence and require students to stretch their inner resources.

7. In music, a mistake is a mistake; the instrument is in tune or not, the notes are well played or not, the entrance is made or not. It is only by much hard work that a successful performance is possible. Through music study, students learn the value of sustained effort to achieve excellence and the concrete rewards of hard work.

8. Music study enhances teamwork skills and discipline. In order for an orchestra to sound good, all players must work together harmoniously towards a single goal, the performance, and must commit to learning music, attending rehearsals, and practicing.

9. Music provides children with a means of self-expression. Now that there is relative security in the basics of existence, the challenge is to make life meaningful and to reach for a higher stage of development. Everyone needs to be in touch at some time in his life with his core, with what he is and what he feels. Self-esteem is a by-product of this self-expression.

10. Music study develops skills that are necessary in the workplace. It focuses on “doing,” as opposed to observing, and teaches students how to perform, literally, anywhere in the world. Employers are looking for multi-dimensional workers with the sort of flexible and supple intellects that music education helps to create as described above. In the music classroom, students can also learn to better communicate and cooperate with one another.

11. Music performance teaches young people to conquer fear and to take risks. A little anxiety is a good thing, and something that will occur often in life. Dealing with it early and often makes it less of a problem later. Risk-taking is essential if a child is to fully develop his or her potential. Music contributes to mental health and can help prevent risky behavior such as teenage drug abuse, which often leads to institutionalization in a teen rehab.

12. An arts education exposes children to the incomparable.
