When I was working on my degree in Music Theory, I was required to take two years of composition. In that time, I composed a few solo piano pieces. Later, I composed a piece for piano and viola along with a string quartet.
I began playing music at the age of six. I started with the piano and saxophone but found my true passion, by age eight, in the guitar. I took private lessons from a great teacher for the first seven consecutive years of my study and further developed my knowledge and skills through self-directed study. I received my Undergraduate degree in Music Theory from the University of Utah. The pursuit of this degree allowed me to study many different musical aspects, including: composition, music history, ear training, sight reading and music technology, along with classical and jazz guitar studies. Over the years, through my education and practice, I have learned a great deal, not just about the guitar, but also ways to teach music and engage students in their pursuit of musical knowledge. Hi. My name is Mike J. I am a full time music instructor with over 30 years of experience teaching, performing and writing music. I teach both steel string guitar (acoustic or electric) and classical (nylon string) guitar as well as the electric bass and the ukulele. I incorporate music theory into my lessons but can also teach theory by itself. I cover rock, folk, pop, blues, jazz, gospel, country or classical. I teach fingerpicking and flat-picking. I strive to find a good balance each lesson between the study of reading, technique and music theory and learning songs you know and like. I have had excellent results with this approach so that typically ¼ of my students have stayed and studied with me for over 3 years! Here's an article I wrote on some of the reasons I enjoy
"Steven is very professional and extremely helpful. He always has a smile on and is serious about helping you phrase the music. I would highly recommend him to anyone."
"It's been really exciting so far! Jordan has been so helpful, so knowledgeable. I could not have found a better instructor and I'm getting better and better every day."
"My daughter's wedding was weeks away and I had never been able to dance a step. With Jenny's help, I came further than ever before in such short time in any subject."
