Colin G.

Fairfield, CA

About Colin

UCLA Herb Alpert School Of Music Grad

Music Outreach Scholar

Ascap Foundation Scholar

GLUCK Fellow

Colin James G. is one of the most decorated and progressive young music educators in California. He has taught hundreds of students in schools both public and private institutions all throughout California. He is now pleased to be offering private lessons to a limited number of students.

Colin recognizes the individuality in music and in musicians. Therefore, in order for a student to really absorb the most from his lessons, he forms highly structured lessons plans tailored sp
ecifically to the students needs, while still maintaining the basic curriculum that every musician needs to know. The skill level does not matter: from beginners to advanced levels, there are things Colin can teach a student to elevate their drumming to the next progression. Equally as important, Colin always maintains a very exciting and encouraging environment for the student to grow and become their best, because at the end of the day, a teacher is supposed to provide the inspiration so that the student can end up teaching themselves.

Justin B.

Folsom, CA

I enjoy teaching students who have never played drums, as well as students who have taken from previous instructors!

About Justin

My name is Justin B. and I've been a professional drummer and instructor the last 15 years. I have toured extensively throughout the United States, as well as playing in the UK. I have been a part of many recordings and sessions during that time and have the knowledge to teach about what those experiences are like.

Currently, I am a member of the Street Drum Corps based out of Los Angeles. We have done TV shows including Cartoon Network's Hall Of Game Awards, as well as the opening segment of Kevin Nealon's special comedy show "Whelmed, But Not Overly." which aired on Showtime.

I am a
drummer that has been playing in some of the top nightclubs throughout California, Las Vegas, Arizona, and Chicago. I have been drumming alongside some very notable DJ's and am providing some of the newest entertainment in that industry.

I am currently endorsed with Pro-Mark drum sticks, Evans Drumheads, Soultone Cymbals, and play Shine Custom Drums.

*** Lesson Details ***
The focus on lessons are to identify the goals of the student, and tackle those immediately. Not interested in learning on a snare drum first? No problem. I prefer to have students playing behind a drum set from day one. I reinforce lessons through teaching true drum notation, making it easier for students to accomplish their goals in a timely matter. I like to keep things laid back and will not be a "task master" type of teacher. I want to make lessons as fun and comfortable as possible and strive to make that happen.

I use a number of instructional books from some of the best publishers of music instruction including The Drummer's Collective Series, as well as Berklee School Of Music Publishing. There are a number of DVD's as resources too! These instructional books cover a wide variety of topics including: Rock Drumming, Funk/Linear Drumming, Jazz Drumming, Latin/Afro-Cuban Drumming, Double Bass Drumming, and Rudimental Drumming.

It is my goal to have the student playing at least two different styles of drumming within the first 3 months, and being at an intermediate level within the first six months. The student will have an understanding of music notation and being able to interpret different rhythms. Most students like to learn songs and within the first six months, the student should have at least two songs memorized.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The student will need to have a drum set.

*** Specialties ***
I like to teach utilizing drum method books and reinforcing lessons with actual drum notation. I feel this is the basis of a solid drum education and helps to make learning songs and more enjoyment from drumming happen faster. I teach Rock, Funk, Jazz, Latin, Hip-Hop/R&B, Top 40, and Techno/EDM. I also have the ability to teach concert band drummers up to the High School level.

Justin is a tremendous drummer and his experience from student to performer makes him an excellent teacher. He customizes the lessons to what I want to do and learn, and makes it fun in the process. I look forward to my weekly lessons and wish I could go more often.

Instructor was very helpful

I am an experienced drummer that got back into playing 2 years ago after a 15 year hiatus. I called Take Lessons to get an instructor that could look at my playing abilities and help me learn where my deficiencies were and work on them.
It was really great getting to know Justin, with his insight and ability to see what was going on with me, I was able to get focused and overcome those deficiencies or at least work on them.
He gave me a new direction to go with my rehearseal time that I hadn't yet thought of. I will help with my speed and accuracy.
I'm really glad that I called and am happy to call Justin a new friend.

"I love teaching because it's worthwhile to see my students succeed in something they really work hard for. I believe that every student has their own unique way of learning music. I am patient and understanding, so my lesson plans will be based on the student's ability, personal interests, and goals. We can work on songs that range from Bach to Ella Fitzgerald, Rolling Stones to Adele and Taylor Swift. Music is fun and rewarding. MATERIALS - Students are responsible for the purchase of their own books, sticks, and other
materials needed for the lessons they are receiving. The instructor will assist in referring students to where they can obtain these items, however I am not responsible for providing them personally. Exceptions will be made on an as needed basis.

PRACTICING – The instructor will determine how much practice is ideal for each student and will encourage students in their practicing. Nevertheless, once the instructor is gone it is up the student to do their own practicing. Progress will be made most quickly by those students who maintain the recommended practicing time. Parents are also encouraged to be involved in their student's practice. Taking the time to listen to your child play their weekly songs, and creating a set time for practicing in the student's daily routine are good ways to become involved.

Barry E.

Sacramento, CA

Play with your hands? Sure! I have basic knowledge of rhythms and techniques on: tabla, doumbek, djembe, and congas

About Barry

I will always consider myself a life-long student of music and drums. Practice, like performance, is an art; and given our limited time to apply ourselves to our craft, it is important to make the best use of that time.

Essentially this process is about problem-solving; figuring out what physical (and psychological) barriers exist that are preventing you from being the player you want to be.

When I work with you, my intent is to help carve out your own path for you to achieve your own goals in the quickest amount of time and with the least amount of effort! This involves (a) clearly id
entifying your goals and (b) incorporating specific practice techniques that will effectively help you get to where you want to be.

In my own practice, I’ve tended to shy away from a heavy reliance on “book learning”; partly because I don’t have the patience, but more importantly because I find fundamental concepts and approaches to be more effective guides than licks and patterns per se.

In other words, there are core factors such as timing, groove, dynamics, and phrasing that apply to all styles and situations. By working through the roadblocks preventing you from laying a strong foundation, you will be well on your way to professional excellence.
