Eduardo C.

Sacramento, CA

About Eduardo

Since my birth, my life was influenced by music and my father's passion to sing. My sense of music started not with understanding of lyrics, but of melodies and rhythms. As matter of fact, the first language I learned was music!! How is this possible?! Well, because of my hearing disability, I did not speak fluently and very well until I was in 9th Grade!! But with God's grace, I understood the language of music first!!

At the age of 10 months, I was hit with a deadly disease: Spinal Meningitis. But thank God, I survived. Because of the disease, I became legally deaf (profound-severed) in m
y left ear and hard-of-hearing (severed) in my right ear. I currently use a hearing-aide device on my right ear. Regardless of my hearing disability, I have the gift of playing music, understanding music, and living musically. I have learned and played keyboard since I was 8 years old.

Piano was not the first instrument I learned. I started off with playing drums which is my secondary. I decided to make piano as my primary instrument and loved playing the piano ever since. My parents noticed my gift of music and agreed to take me to private piano lessons weekly.

After multiple years of private piano lessons from age of 8 to 14 and taking music classes in High School, at the age of 16, I joined the full band in a local church as the lead keyboardist. Of 16 years - and counting - with experience of performing and playing piano with a band locally and out of towns, I've had the privilege for 2 years as the Director of Worship & Music Ministry at Victory Outreach Sacramento (Spanish). Victory Outreach International granted me an opportunity to perform the instrumental piano background at the 2011 Victory Outreach International/World Conference at the Los Angeles Convention Center, California.

In that same year, I enrolled into the full 2 1/2 year program at Life Music Institute (Instituto Vida Musik). The Director of Life Music Institute noticed my passion for music and the desire to create a Deaf Music some day; we became very close friends. He invited me to participate with 70 member choir at a local Sacramento Festival 2012. Saving the best for last, I was honored to lead in front of 3,800 people of the final special song "En Una Sola Voz" (In One Voice) in American Sign Language.

Currently, I am excited and honored to be the Music Director at Elevate Life Church in Sacramento, CA. Meanwhile, I am excited in continuing in pursuing a BA in Music at Sacramento State University. There are always room for me to learn and grow as a musician. Without a doubt, I am thrilled to learn even more in Jazz, Classic, and Performances.

Not only I play piano and drums, I play guitar as well! I loved acoustic guitar and decided to pick up a guitar and starting learning. Now, the guitar is my third instrument.

Besides living and playing music, I teach also! By numerous peers, families, and friends, I've been told that I have the gift of teaching. I love teaching!!

I first started teaching at the Sacramento City Unified School District as the Teacher Assistant from 2001 to 2004 at Sacramento High School and J F Kennedy High School. It was an unforgettable experience teaching the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Hearing, and disabled students. Not too long ago, I returned to the Sacramento City Unified School District as an Instructional Assistant I in the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Special Education Program. I'm loving it!!

I felt compelled to start teaching piano in 2010 at home. I've been hired by Southgate Recreation & Park District in Sacramento, CA as a Special Interest Instructor and I am still in connection to teach there in the summer every year. I teach piano, guitar, and American Sign Language there. Again, teaching - and giving - are my gifts.

Monthly, I share special events to all my students, friends, and family to witness, participate, or to support. Many times, I participate in those events and always encourage others to participate as well.

I believe that music is not our life. Our life is a music. You ARE a music. I'm looking forward to help you have a musical life!!

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach is play music first, then read and write music. Just like an infant would speak first, then read and write later. It is more effective and smarter. Lessons are for all ages and are started off with songs based on their familiarity and strengths. Then progressively, I build on their weaknesses and expand their instrument and performance skills. The finally, when students are ready, I clearly explain and reveal on the music theory. There, their ‘whys’ are answered and ‘oohhhh-that-makes-sense’ are uttered. Lessons are progressive and it's not strict on my plan, but on the students' progress. Through patience and encouragement, my students enjoy succeeding learning how to play music on their choice of piano or guitar.

During the first lesson, I care about my students and their parents first; I want to be a friend to both of them. At the same time, they'll have a strategical, knowledgeable, and wise teacher. I start off with lots of questions about my new students, parents, and their interest. I even encourage my students to ask me questions too!! I move on in empowering my students to feel comfortable, confident, and fearless - and to enjoy!! Can a student learn without believing in themselves? Can a student have interest and passion without having fun or with a smile on their face? I encourage those important factors.

After noting down key strengths and weakness, goals, examples of lessons, their preference of styles and songs, and creating a song list together, through excellence rapport and communication, I'll get the feeling of the students’ expectations, needs, and what they enjoy.

My style of teaching is very interactive and for anyone to learn. I have a 6 year old student who learn her first song, "London Bridge" on her first day. One adult student, who supposedly could never be on tempo, finally achieved this from tempo #50 to tempo #150 in 3 lessons. Other students who can play 'well' now improve their flexibility playing Major Scales with two hands with up-beat rhythms. Others can now fully understand the theory and rules of Major Scales, Minor Scales, Major and Minor Chords, Diminished and Augmented Chords, and fill out the exercise charts without hesitation. Surprisingly, another student now performs comfortably in front of their friends and family just for fun!! These are just few examples of techniques, lessons, skills, theories that students succeed through my passionate teaching. I love what I'm doing!!

Additionally, the curriculums and book information I provided below are just a few and are not same for all students since each student learns in different ways. I am flexible and have access to many outside resources to ensure that my students' lessons are effective. My personality is lovely, fun, patience, peaceful, funny, kind, and friendly. From time to time, shy and timid private and group students are now confident and courageous. One very young student came up to me on his second lesson and said, "I really like you, Mr. Eddie!! I always enjoy seeing my student smile and laughing learning how to play music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The home studio lessons are in the living room with an 88 keys keyboard, guitar, and speakers. Seating is available. Parking is on the residential street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a Yamaha PF80 keyboard with built-in speakers and full-weighted 88 keys, a keyboard stand, a bench, and a music stand. A professional KORG keyboard can be used as well as necessary.

If students has a keyboard or a piano with full-weighted 88 keys, that would be great!!

I would expect the students to provided enough space for a minimum of 3 people with nice 'work-traffic'.

Although not required, it is a plus if a WiFi internet is provided. It would be excellent to expand my access through my laptop to resources such as videos, sounds, websites, etc as an extra tool as well.

A quiet area is required for effective teaching and learning.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in contemporary, alternative, soft pop, pop-rock, and uniquely gifted signing songs in American Sign Language with dance. But I am flexible in different genres. I enjoy all kinds of styles and genres. But more importantly, I study students' preference of genres to teach them basic fundamentals and go from there to more complicated fundamentals and techniques. I focus on teaching the students thoroughly of 3 elements of music: Melody, Harmony, and Rhythms - whichever is easier and more enjoyable for students to start with. Dynamics also are taught as well to add another important dimension to the music.

To achieve in understanding and performing all these elements, I highly implement them through visual, reading, writing, listening, and playing. Lessons are hands on, active, thorough, and with common-sense examples and clarifications. Also, I enjoy teaching through many life examples to 'open their eyes' to the music language. I make sure that all their 'whys' are answered in a timely manner.

American Sign Language
I’ve always dreamed of learning sign language and when I decided to finally start taking classes, I chose to take private lessons with Eduardo Cardenas because I wanted the lessons to be catered to my learning style and rhythm. It was the best decision I could have made.

Eduardo knew how to encourage me when I needed it but also to push me when he saw fit. Through his classes, I not only learned beginner ASL but also had the opportunity to experience the deaf culture and practice my ASL with other deaf/hard-of-hearing people.

Eduardo is creative in his teaching methods, organized and definitely has a talent for teaching. I would 100% recommend him to anyone who is interested in learning ASL.

Eddie is wonderful and so patient. He has a weath of knowledge and can play anything (from jazz, contemporary, rock, blues, and the list goes on)! What I enjoy the most is that he keeps me on my toes when it come to my lessons and practices. What I also like about Eddie is that he is flexible because I have a busy schedule.

Eddie is great and he comes highly recommended!

I LEARNED. I gained something. Learning from Eddie Cardenas was not just fun but such a great experience. Learning from him was awesome! I was able to not only learn how to play the piano but be able to relate with someone who loves music just as I do. Someone who understands the beauty of it. He was very patient and knew exactly what to do so I could understand EVEN IF I asked a bajillion questions haha! I was able to learn the basics within seconds. I was only interested in learning how to play the piano but after my lessons with that, I wanted to learn more! I wanted to take guitar lessons with him as well. One of the best teachers I know! I don't know if it gets any better than Eddie Cardenas!

*** Lesson Details ***
As a private guitar instructor, my primary goal has always been the developm
ent of each students' musical creativity. Whether a student of mine hopes to become a songwriter, composer, or jazz guitarist or if they simply wish to learn guitar for their own enjoyment, I can guide them in the right direction. I firmly believe in the value of music theory, sight-reading, ear-training and music history. All of these aspects of music will be incorporated into each lesson. However, when I cover such material with students, I make sure that it directly relates to the style of music and/or material they are interested in learning.

*** Studio Equipment ***

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to provide his or her own guitar, amplifier and cables. I would be willing to bring books, charts, sheet music and anything else that would be needed to teach each lesson.

*** Specialties ***
Although I teach guitar styles ranging from jazz, blues and rock to classical and flamenco, I am most proficient as a classical guitarist/teacher. The majority of my training as well as musical interest is in this style.

***Now available to teach Nationwide via SKYPE!!!***

My style is pretty much right down the middle between laid back and always pushing my students. What I mean by pushing is that I always encourage, in a positive way, my students to Keep PRACTICING! Practice is one of the most important things while taking lessons. Students cannot get too far by not practicing. It just doesn't work that way.

I use a combination of simple rhythm books, drum set books, and listening and playing along with music. After 3-6 months of lessons with me, you should be able to play along with some of your favorite songs, and be decent at doing some simple sight reading out of books.

Please note: I have time available in the evening on my calendar, but that is only for traveling to a student's house. During the day, my studio is available.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Room w/ drum set, practice pads, music stands, seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student should have a drum set if lessons are at their house. I can provide sticks, brushes, etc.

*** Specialties ***
I teach jazz, rock, hip-hop, Latin, Afro-Cuban, funk, New Orleans second line, and classical snare.

Professional Teacher That Goes Extra Mile

Tim is an excellent teacher for my son. It is wonderful to have a teacher that is willing to meet the needs of the student instead of imposing their agenda on the student. An example of that is finding out what kind of music my son wanted to play and tailoring the lessons for that genre. This even included looking up music to bring to the lesson for a song that my son wanted to learn to play. Tim is able to explain new concepts well and can adapt his teaching to something different when a concept is not being grasp by the student. He is an excellent choice for us!

Teresa P.

West Sacramento, CA

About Teresa

I was born into a family of musicians. We must have had every style of music floating around every family gathering. I would roam with delight among the Mariachis, Rockers and R&B singers and musicians in my family. As early as 3 or 4 years old, in an effort to get me to quit bugging them, they began to invite me to sing with them.... at least that way I wasn't twirling around knocking down their equipment, or asking a bunch of questions while they were rehearsing or jamming. Music was always and continues to be part of my existence, as normal to me as breathing. I love to sing and enjoy sha
ring that passion with others. It makes my day to see my students grow in their talents and confidence.

From beginners who just want to sing for fun to the more experienced vocalists, I can help you understand how your voice works and how to get the most out of it.

**In your first lesson, I will get to know you by asking for your vocal history, influences, goals, and style. Most importantly, “What would you like to get out of this lesson?” Every singer has different challenges, needs, and goals, so I approach each student and lesson as a unique experience where the student’s most pressing needs will be addressed.

I’ll give you an honest idea of where your voice needs to grow and then will work with the tools to get there! You will get a personalized lesson plan to practice with. Like a gym workout routine, these exercises will target your weak areas to correct bad habits and build a strong, balanced instrument.

**I will ask you to sing a song…… your latest repertoire, “Happy Birthday,” "twinkle twinkle little star", something just to get an idea of your voice and style. Then I will take you through a few singing technique exercises to quickly assess your strengths and challenges.

**As your technical abilities grow, you need to apply them to songs. The key is to maintain the same easy feeling in your songs that came out in the exercises. Bring in your music and we can work out any kinks and I will also suggest appropriate material in your key and style that will build upon the successes of your exercises. Stylistic and performance coaching is available, but our focus is technique, if you don’t learn HOW to sing, WHAT you sing will always be limited. I will work with you so that as a singer, you will be able to sing through a greater range with more consistency. As a performer. you will become confident that your voice will deliver time after time. My goal is to help you sing in a free, natural manner, while keeping your lessons engaging and fun.

-EAR TRAINING -
As a choir and vocal director, I am trained to listen and pay special attention to all the details including pitch, vibrato, dynamic and harmonies. I will help you learn to listen and gain confidence to "hear" progressions in the music and their voice.

-STYLES/GENRES -
Being a worship leader, choir and vocal director in a major urban church in the Sacramento area, I have over 13 years experience as a gospel artist and contemporary christian singer, singing, performing and recording with many gospel artists and contemporary christian artists, both local and professional. I have recorded and performed with such artists as Israel Houghton, Lincoln Brewster, BJ Putnan, Trent Corey, Darnisha Taylor and the Porter Brothers.

-SINGING/VOICE TRAINING -
I am a Voice Teacher (student) with the Institute for Vocal Advancement. The IVA technique is based on 17th and 18th Century principles of singing developed by the Old Italian School of Singing. Our goal is to train voices to sing in a free and natural manner, smoothly, from the bottom of the range to the top with no breaks or sudden changes in quality. Training in this technique gives the singer access to all dynamics, with tonal clarity and flexibility. Also, training in this technique helps improve a singer's range, endurance, stamina, breath control, resonance, vocal strength and vocal quality across all styles of music without fatigue or damage to the voice. We accomplish these results by training the singer to find a balance between airflow and intrinsic muscular resistance, all within a resting laryngeal posture.

=PERFORMANCE OR AUDITION PREP-
As a former entertainment business professional and singer, I have experience in dance, choreography, stage blocking, performance technique and vocal coaching. I will help you prepare for your performances and/or auditions to present the best YOU, that you can be!

I am very lucky to have Teresa as my vocal teacher. Her passion for music is contagious and when she sings, her soul comes through. She's patient, encouraging and energizing. I love lessons with her, she truly cares for all of her students and she adjusts the lessons based on how comfortable you feel. Not only is she a great teacher but she also has an amazing personality and a tremendous amount of energy.

Within a few months, my vocal range has extended and I learned how to make my voice sound more powerful. Vocal training really doesn't get any better than this!

Wow! Nothing but an amazing experience with Teresa! I had absolutely zero past singing history and in just a couple months I'm comfortable singing in church and in front of other people. She's quick to adjust to my needs, like if one exercise isn't working for me she'll come up with a new one that works better. I like that we spend part of our time doing exercises and the other part we sing songs. She has slowly but surely weaned me off singing with her so that I sing by myself now. She's always encouraging and uses kind words even when she's giving me ways to improve. Teresa is flexible with my schedule too which I really appreciate. I never thought singing would be so much fun!
