David S.

Highland, MD

As mentioned above, David enjoys teaching students from all different backgrounds and levels of proficiency. Whether you are just starting out or a virtuoso shredder in the making, he is happy to teach you! Over all, he is fairly laid back, as long as you practice. He usually combines work with reading off of the treble clef (what he likens to "eating your vegetables." You may not want to do it, but it will make you a healthier musician!) with learning more popular songs (or songs the student says they would like to learn) through tablature and chord charts, depending on the style of the song.

David is also very pro music theory. He usually incorporates music theory into the curriculum in conjunction with the material already being discussed. He is also very knowledgeable about composition/songwriting, and if the student is interested in learning more about this area, he is happy to share what he knows!

About David

David is a successful singer/songwriter/guitarist out of Baltimore, MD. He has a bachelor's degree in Music with a concentration in composition from Salisbury University, where he also studied jazz and classical guitar . In the 18 years he has been performing (13 of those professionally) and playing guitar, he has released 4 CDs and written over 200 original songs. He has opened for major national acts like Journey, Maroon 5, Toby Keith, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Thrice, Story of the Year, The Bouncing Souls, Eric Hutchinson, Virginia Coalition and Graham Colton. In the process, he has performed at such notable venues as FedEx Field, Nationals Park, Jiffy Lube Live/Nissan Pavilion, the 9:30 Club, Rams Head Live and the Recher Theatre. As a teacher, David has taught in ...

I never imagined a beginner guitar class to be so comprehensive, challenging and yet so much fun. There's a lot to learn about playing the guitar from holding it to learning how to read music to playing a tune. Scott's easy going style encourages even the most slothful students like myself. We do it all in 1 and a half hours twice a week. His students have a wide range of experience with music and the guitar but at each session Scott is able to ensure that each one of us gets something out of the class. For example, he'll instruct the advanced students to play a more complicated version of a piece. Or he'll touch base with every student in the class at least twice by physically walking over and showing them something, asking a question, checking on their guitar, etc. Finally, he has those qualities that make for outstanding teachers - he not only knows and loves his work but he's really good at it. So each session is a fun mini concert lesson.

I've been taking lessons for about a month now and I have learned so much. Not only basics on the instrument but also music theory which I've always had problems with before. Each lesson is a thoroughly enjoyable experience and I look forward to my lessons each week.

Scott is easy-going, patient and seems to know what is needed for the stage of instruction that I am at. I highly recommend Scott as an instructor. He has helped me with the ukulele tremendously in just four lessons. Couldn't ask for a better instructor.

Dennis B.

Bethesda, MD

I encourage all students to try writing music or at least coming up with their own basic ideas. I will then work with the student's ideas to help them learn how to develop an initial idea into a large more complete musical form. If the student is able to write more complete songs I will coach them in techniques to improve the structure, harmony and melody of their work. I try to demonstrate ways that they can improve their writing without simply rewriting their ideas for them. For all of this I draw on my many years of experience as a composer. I try to guide the student towards developing a process of writing music that works for them. My main goal is to help them to grow into their own musical voice rather than to simply do what I suggest.

About Dennis

I have been teaching guitar for 25 years in the Washington DC metro area. I work with students 12 years of age and up, but I am especially experienced at teaching adult students regardless of whether they are beginners or have previous guitar experience. I have performed in acoustic Celtic, new age, funk, progressive rock, fusion and contemporary jazz groups and am currently performing regularly as a solo acoustic guitarist. I have composed over 40 works for solo guitar as well as numerous pieces for small jazz bands. I have played on numerous CDs including my most recent solo CD 'DARK MATTER'. *** Lesson Details *** I tailor the lesson materials to suit the interest of the student but I am dedicated to teaching students at any level to learn to better understand the fundamentals of ...

fabulous teacher

Dennis is a wonderful teacher. His extensive knowledge of all forms of music comes through in his teaching skills. He is extremely patient and understanding as we work through pieces. I started taking classes as an adult in retirement, with past experience limited to a few chords learned way back in high school. We're now well into number of beautiful classical pieces, I've gained a significant knowledge of music theory, and we've just now starting to tackle the blues !!. I may have eclectic tastes, but Dennis feels very comfortable with it and loves teaching all types of music. I know I'm in the hands of a master musician and teacher.

If you are serious about learning this instrument, you couldn't find a better teacher.

Dennis is extraordinary in all ways: He knows about all there is to know about harmony; he can pinpoint and diagnose exactly what difficulty a student might be having and then explain how to overcome it; he is a talented composer and improvisor; and above all, in whatever genre he chooses to play, he is simply a beautiful musician.
