Patrick L.

Arden, NC

About Patrick

Hi there, my name is Patrick, and I am now a new resident of the Asheville area. I am a music teacher of Trumpet, Piano, Voice and Sound Recording with more than 20 plus years of experience. Below, I relate some of my experiences and philosophies as a teacher of music since 2002.

*** Lesson Details ***
Trumpet Lessons
I have worked with adults and children, with beginners, and with more experienced players looking for a push or a new direction. I have developed many different teaching methods based on what each of my students wants to get out of lessons. The heart of most lessons I teac
h is learning to play or understand songs. Usually, I rely on my students to select the songs they wish to study, which I then transcribe to make personal arrangements fitted to their abilities. Of course, I will suggest or recommend songs at times. I also supply relevant exercises and music theory to accelerate the learning process.

Piano Lessons
I differentiate between concepts and skills, while stressing the importance of mastering both. As important as it is to understand the intervalic relationships in something like the major scale, this knowledge does little for the pianist if she or he cannot pick out the notes to the different scales in real time. In observing that each person demonstrates unique learning patterns and abilities, I have learned that some people will come to understand the conceptual through mastery of memorized tasks while some will succeed with technical mastery only after achieving some conceptual understanding.
Voice Lessons
Having first begun singing at 22 years old, I know first hand that it’s never to late to start singing. Having some experience in school but not fully as a professional till in my 20′s, I have learned from some of the top professionals in the South Florida area. My first vocal lessons was with Gloria Estefan’s back up singer Jon Secada. Jon has his first hit “Just Another Day” that stayed at #1 for several weeks. His one lesson really helped me use singing in my gigging around town. From that time on, I have used this technique for all my students. focusing on JUST BREATHING, has helped many of my students.

Teaching Sound Recording
Working in the early 1980s with recorded music and computers, I was introduced to the new wave of recording at its birth. At Miami Dade Community College, I taught and assisted students in Composition, Sound Development, and Sound Recording using Mac computers and PC’s. As of this day, I personally teach recording in Logic Pro, Bias Peak and Mastering using Waves plug ins and having finished products in Mp4 format and or CD’s.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Mac with logic pro software instruments, piano seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
expect students to provide paper and pencil and put in practice time on their respected instruments at least 30 min a week

*** Specialties ***
Alfred,Hanon,Rubank Advanced Method for instruments.

Stephanie Q.

Asheville, NC

About Stephanie

I am a career musician, and conservatory trained violin and piano instructor with over 25 years teaching experience, and a resume spanning many pages. (My schedule changes often, and I'm not always up to date on Take Lessons...so PLEASE check with me even if you see I am not available at the time you need your lessons.) I am a competition judge, member of National Music Teachers Association, and Suzuki Association of the Americas. I have proven results, as documented on my students YouTube channel. With my instruction, you will learn quickly and most importantly, correctly, saving you time
and resources as you reach your musical goals. Fact: One of the only activities that activates, stimulates, and uses the entire brain is music, so let's get started!

Some people have difficulty reaching a teachers' studio. For this reason, I have perfected my ability to teach via Skype or FaceTime. It is an advantage for my students to be instructed by a quality teacher. One of the advantages for me is that I can see what is going on bigger than in real life. It's worth a try, isn't it?

*** Lesson Details ***
All the students on my Student YouTube channel who have studied under three years, are practicing 2 hours a week, and you will have a similar result. That's 20 minutes a day, 6 days a week. Students under 5 practice about 10-15 minutes a day.

Please have an assignment book that lies flat, and keep it next to your music books as you practice between lessons. My instructions are very detailed to insure your best progress.

You will benefit most by booking your lessons in advance by the semester, or at least by the month. Frequent cancellations will result in dismissal, as I wish only to teach committed, sincere and serious students...don't worry, my lessons are fun, and you will enjoy my sense of humor!

*** Studio Equipment ***
For on-line lessons, you will need a quiet place, and please test your sound and video prior to beginning of lesson. For students under 13 or so, do have a parent or caregiver taking notes while we work together.

*** Specialties ***
I have much experience with various learning styles, and in fact, am featured in a documentary made of one of my autistic students.

I began taking on line Organ lessons with Stephanie in July of 2016. She is an excellent instructor. She makes you want to learn and do your best. She is very patient and explains things very well. She asks that you practice 20 minutes a day. Since she inspires you to improve and do your best, it is easy to practice longer than requested. She has brought joy back into my life through music. I am very grateful.

I had taken lessons locally for several months and was very frustrated. I was given a color coded sticker and sheet music to get me playing fast however I actually wanted to learn to read and understand music.

On a lark I found Stephanie on the takelessons site. We scheduled a call where I explained my experience, frustrations, and what I wanted to accomplish. I honestly did not think online classes would work. Was I wrong!! It takes great skill in verbally correcting bow holds, etc. and Stephanie is terrific. Before I was told to practice but I never knew HOW to. Stephanie assigns specific tasks, # of time to repeat, and duration for homework. She is so friendly and easy to work with. I would recommend her for any age or skill level??

I am seventy years old and have absolutely no natural ability! Robert is patience and respectful, he always find something good about what I have learned. Very encouraging. My third lesson was the best as we both seemed more relaxed and get more comfortable. I like Robert.

I would definitely recommend Robert Martin as your music teacher. He is very patient and motivating. He has a great way of explaining techniques or concepts so you can easily understand them. He is very knowledgeable about many music genres and music theory. With his instruction, I have come along way in my guitar playing since I first starting taking lessons. Very nice man and great teacher.

Robert has been great to work with. He comes to our home weekly to work on bass guitar with our daughter. She has come so far in only a few months. They work on all aspect of the music- theory, finger placement, drills, and they pick some really fun music. He has let my daughter pick several songs she really likes so that she stays engaged. Meeting time been flexible which is a huge bonus! So much easier on all of us! Thanks Robert!

Kendra R.

Hendersonville, NC

About Kendra

I have a love of music that never grows thin. My studies initiated with a purely classical approach leading to the scholarships I received to further my education. Performing with various orchestras, musical theater, opera, and small ensembles fulfilled my childhood desires. Later in my career, I expanded my studying and performing in other musical genres that have included jazz, rock, blues, folk, latin and many more. Working with various talented musicians encouraged a new line of study in improvisation I hadn't acquired during my classical studies and performance. Provided with the opp
ortunity to study, perform, and record in classical and alternative styles has only increased my love of music and ability to reach my students at a more personal level.

Allyson H.

Asheville, NC

About Allyson

I am a very enthusiastic musician, and I love to share my knowledge and skills with others! I believe music has the power to heal, empower, and change the lives of those who feel it's calling! I am a classically trained violinist, and have been playing for over 9 years. I can teach anyone interested how to read sheet music, and also how to improvise. I absolutely love bluegrass and old time fiddle music and would love to help someone interested in learning that style as well! I've learned that it's nice to know both. I have been singing and performing since I could walk and talk, and have voca
l training and experience in many different backgrounds including everything from choir to contemporary styles. Everyone likes something different, and I would like to help every individual discover what that is, and work on perfecting their particular vocal style of choice; And help those who don't know to figure out what they like! I am looking forward to spreading the love of music.
