Jonathan H.

Hatfield, PA

About Jonathan

I started my musical education in a children'€™s choir at age 6.
When I turned 8 years old, I began piano lessons. I started violin
at 9 and trombone at 10. I am now proficient on the guitar, bass, and piano. Having completed my tour of duty in the U.S. Army, I am currently on the Dean'€™s list as a music/audio production major, and plan to continue my music education until I earn at least a masters in performance and composition. I started my teaching career at Milestones in Music, a local studio, as an independent contractor, and was able to gain valuable experience, and through my mem
bership in the National Association for Music Education(NAfME) I was able to fine tune my curriculum. I am a former member of the Grammy U Recording Academy, and have had opportunities to work with a lot of different musicians. (The Recording Academy is the organization that created the most prestigious
award in music, the Grammy). I am the band leader at my church Montco Bible Fellowship, and the lead audio tech for an audio/video group.. Sanctuary Sound. I also do consultant work for organizations looking to setup a sound system/studio. I enjoy recording my own music in my home studio, and learning to play new instruments. I hope to pass my love for music to the next generation!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a very laid back instructor... as you will find out! I understand that not everyone learns at the same rate; however, I am a perfectionist and don't allow students to advance until they have learned a particular skill. I would rather a student take forever to learn a song, and practice it with good technique, than be able to play it right away with poor form and posture! I reinforce the value of working toward goals and celebrate with students when they reach them.  I understand that every student has different interests and reasons for wanting to learn an instrument... I try to focus on the areas that are of interest to the student, because if you are enjoying yourself then you will excel.  This does not mean that the subjects and skills that are not of interest will not be taught, because I believe in being a well-rounded musician. I teach both jazz (improvisation/reading chord charts) and classical (written/ composed music).

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio is currently not optimal for teaching... I hope to change this within the next year!!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson books and other learning materials, but expect to be reimbursed. I expect the student to have their own instrument/equipment. Piano students are required to have a piano or a keyboard with weighted keys/hammer-action (preferably 88 keys), a piano bench and a pedal. Guitar/bass students must have an acoustic/electric guitar/bass with a strap or footstool, pick, and cable and amplifier if applicable! Digital audio students must have their own computer, Digital Audio workstation (software), digital audio interface, speakers/headphones and midi controller. ALL STUDENTS MUST PROVIDE A NOTEBOOK (college rule or staff)!!

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical and jazz piano! I am more than proficient at most production software including: reason, fl studio, ableton live... and other editing software such as sony sound forge, audacity, etc...

Nicholas U.

Allentown, PA

About Nicholas

I am a second generation music teacher for piano and violin. I have been teaching for over 15 years as well as playing both instruments for about 30 years. I have an Associates in Music. Making lessons both fun and educational is what make my students successful in their instruments. My lessons are custom made to how the student learns, not cookie-cut. We also do bi-annual recitals in October and April to showcase the students' accomplishments.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are both fun and educational at the same time. I compromise with my students by having us each pick a piece
to play on top of the usual learning pieces. My students play anything from Katy Perry to 80s music and rock ballads and in between. I use John Thompson and Fingerpower as well as a notespeller for piano and String Essentials for violin. Many of my students can play with both hands after six months. We do recitals each year to showcase the past year's achievements in their pieces.

*** Travel Equipment ***
For either instrument I pick up all books and supplies ahead of the lesson. I have my own violin and music stand that I use to assist in teaching.

*** Specialties ***
John Thompson, Suzuki, popular music, Gospel, New Age, and anything in between

Laura Z.

Easton, PA

About Laura

Hello! I'm Laura, I've been studying violin and French for sixteen years and am a student at Wellesley College. I love working with novice to intermediate students to create a learning environment that caters to their learning style and strengths. I am more than happy to start from scratch, pick up where another teacher left off, or just act as someone to practice with; whatever you need.

VIOLIN: I have four years experience running an after-school string ensemble composed of students from ages 4-13, novice to intermediate, and taught four years of private violin lessons to many of those st
udents. I've played in orchestras and chamber groups for many years, and have a thorough understanding of collaborative music learning and creation.

FRENCH: I learned conversational French with a native speaker at a young age, and continued with formal studies throughout grade school. I enjoy teaching and practicing all aspects of the French language, but accent and pronunciation are my specialty (and favorite!).

Laura was amazing! Daisy really learned so much in the first lesson. Laura has a fun and engaging way about her and delivers her lesson with such clarity that I, as a parent who does not play an instrument, will be able to make sure she is doing the correct thing in practice. Thank you Laura!

Master Ukulele Chords: Your Guide to D, Dm, and D7

For many beginners, the D chord will be one of the first ukulele chords you learn how to play. As you're learning how to be a better singer, proper posture is bound to come up! Who knew so much could be affected by the way you stand when you sing? Take a look at the basics in this infographic by Ann Arbor, MI voice teacher Elaina R...   When you hear the word “posture,” what do you think of? A ballerina poised for action, or a military officer standing at attention, perhaps. Be warned: neither the ballerina nor the military officer has a good singer’s stance. The word “posture

2 Simple Tricks to Play Country Guitar
When you're taking guitar lessons, you may find it challenging to play different styles of music. Here, guitar teacher Samuel B. shares his tips to help you learn country guitar... Compared to other music styles like jazz and bluegrass, country is a structurally simple genre. It usually shares the same three-chord structure as blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll.  When playing country music, you will use playful, open-handed picking to play chords, versus the flat-picking of individual notes o
