Glenn P.

Cardiff by the Sea, CA

I will teach you finger style picking, folk style picking, and flamenco style picking. I will teach you several techniques for forming all of your chords as well

About Glenn

I started playing guitar and bass in my early teen years because I just couldn't wait to see a live concert. I thought if I could play the songs myself, it would be just as good. Well, it turns out that playing music you love yourself is even better than seeing a concert. You can make your own concert everyday!
Since then I've been fortunate enough to work with a great deal of professional performers and to play many hundreds of successful live shows.
Several years ago, I decided to focus on teaching. This was a great decision, because I truly love this work. I make a real difference in peo
ples lives, and help them achieve their goals, and sometimes even their dreams!

*** Lesson Details ***
Students can expect fun lessons based on songs they love. Acoustic, electric, classical, and bass students are all welcome! I bring an amplifier and an iPod, and show you from day one how to play at least a part of a song that you really want to work on. I will be able to make some decisions about future lessons based upon the level of playing ability that the student displays. Once a student starts to get the hang of playing the basics, we can work on many songs and eventually learn to play solos.
In addition, I explain all of the musical theory that the songs are based on, and you will be able to communicate with other musicians using the proper terminology and notation.
I like to encourage the students to practice at least 20 minutes a day, rather than for a few hours once or twice a week. This way, your muscle memory stays sharp, and you can start to get comfortable playing the guitar or bass.
More advanced students can expect to learn soloing, and playing along with other instruments, as well as making recordings, and composing original songs.
For still more advanced students, I can explain how to play the hardest guitar and bass solos, and all that I have learned as a performer including how to put a band together, how to book shows, and how to choose cover songs, and how to arrange music for performance.
My students always come first as teaching is my full time job, and I love what I do!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I provide a practice amplifier with digital effects and a drum machine for all lessons. I provide a bass guitar amplifier in my studio for my bass students. I also bring a guitar to a bass lessons, and a bass to a guitar lessons, for my more advanced students, to have a 'band practice' type lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring amplifiers to lessons, and printed teaching materials.
Students just need their own instrument to play.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching proper timing, tuning, technique, theory, composition, and performance. From beginner to performing professional, I can take you all the way. My style is rock, and I have a background in classical, country, blues, rock, heavy metal, and pop.

Both my son (over a year of piano lessons) and now my daughter (just started to learn to sing) take music lessons from Mr. Bijan and they both love it. He has a calm personality and a way with kids which I think brings out the best from his students. Extremely patient and changes the pace as per the students. My son has been learning piano for 3 years and had his moments of struggle but was good to see Mr. Bijan work with him and successfully motivated him to get back on track.

Bijan is a very good guitar instructor. My daughter and I both took guitar lessons and he was able to work with us as individuals since we both had different skill levels. Bijan is very patient with his students and helped us through various learning obstacles. I highly recommend anyone that needs or wants to learn any musical instrument to take lessons from Bijan.

Cristopher E.

San Diego, CA

I can teach traditional classical guitar finger picking techniques using a nylon string guitar. I can also teach fingerpicking on steel string acoustic guitar, as well as performing and arranging classical pieces on the electric guitar. I also love to make my own arrangements of classical pieces from other instruments. My personal favorites to perform are J. S. Bach and Heitor Villa-Lobos.

About Cristopher

I began taking piano lessons when I was six years old, but switched to guitar lessons at age ten. Ever since then, my passion has been playing guitar and songwriting. I am a music composition honors major at UCSD.

Whether you want to learn to be a guitar virtuoso or you just want to be able to play some songs for your friends and family, I want to provide you with the best information and tools to help you accomplish your goals. I believe in trying to get the most out of the minimum - I want you to get the most benefit out of the time you spend, regardless if you are practicing for thirty
minutes or for eight hours.

My background focuses mostly on classical, rock/metal, and jazz, and my specialty is the electric guitar. I can also help you learn classical guitar on a nylon string guitar if you prefer, including some flamenco.

*** Lesson Details ***
I want the student to have fun with music, and rather than focusing on scales and tedious exercises, I have my students learn technique and music theory more from the actual music (Not to say that learning and practicing scales isn't important, but it is much more useful in the long run to have actual musical melodies and riffs that you can play, and that you know how to take them and use in different musical situations).

I try and be as flexible with the student as possible, as I know we all have different goals and amounts of time that we can dedicate, but I believe that even if someone just wants to learn some basic guitar playing, that a little understanding music theory will help them go a lot further.

Regardless, the student should be able to learn the music they want to play, and I will go out of my way to try and find/learn the music you want. I will even transcribe or write my own arrangement if I can't find a suitable one, or to make a simpler version that the student can learn. I believe the student should be able to access and interact with the type of music they want to learn early on, as this will help keep the student interested while at the same time teaching him/her the elements of music and guitar.

As I want the students to be able to interact with the music as early as possible, I will always try and find ways that we can play together, and I will even make recordings so they can practice playing with someone even when they are at home. I also will periodically record the student so that they can not only get the experience playing and recording, but so that they can also look back on their progress, as well as having something they can show their friends/family.

While I mostly play classical, rock/metal, and jazz, I can help students with a large variety of styles, including blues, r & b, and pop music. I also believe that learning different styles and how to take the elements from each that you like and make them your own will lead to a greater mastery of the instrument, regardless of which style you prefer to actually play.

I recommend that my students practice at least thirty minutes a day if they want to see consistent progress, although in the beginning they may not be able to practice that much until they develop calluses on the fingertips. Of course, if they can practice more, that would be great, but I understand that with everything else going on, it isn't always possible to practice every day or for everyone to put the same time into it.

I have had the pleasure of playing, and practicing, with Mr. Cris over the last few years. We actually took guitar class together in high school, and even then, I could tell that he was exceptionally talented. Given his family background in music, and his desire to create wonderful compositions, it was no surprise that he chose to pursue music in his life. Recently I have needed assistance with my songwriting and I have had no hesitation in bringing my work to Cris in order to gain insight into what I may need o do in order to successfully finish my composition(s). He is well educated in music, has learned from many accomplished professionals, and is extremely hard working in his craft. And finally, Cris is very patient, insightful, and motivated, when working, and/or teaching, individuals. I would highly recommend him to anyone of all ages.

One of the problems with musicians these days is a lack of formal training. Cris has spent the last 20+ years perfecting his abilities to teach music. In my opinion, Part of what makes Cris stand out from other instructors is his knowledge and open minded view of different styles of music. A teacher with a diverse musical background is ideal for a student who wants to create a good basis or reach the next level in their abilities. Cris is able to help you learn guitar the right way and set a path that will advance your abilities quicker than most other teachers.

Jesse H.

Del Mar, CA

Learn to play the Spanish Guitar through the unique "Romero Method"

About Jesse

Jesse H. plays guitar with The Mar Dels, one of San Diego’s best-known dance and party bands. But he’s more than just a rock-and-roller — he’s studied jazz and classical guitar with other master musicians.

His lessons focus on developing:

- Right and left hand technique
- Finger picking and flat picking
- Tonal and sound quality
- Playing and singing
- The ability to play a solo
- Chords, scales, and arpeggios

Jesse’s broad skill set allows him to teach a variety of styles, though he’s happy to focus on one particular style if that’s what the student prefers.

Don’t miss this o
pportunity to take guitar or ukulele lessons from one of the top musicians in San Diego.

*** Overview ***
I studied jazz guitar with Peter Sprague and classical guitar with Celin Romero. While at UCSD, I studied with Pepe Romero in master classes. In 1982, I became interested in classic rock and founded my band, The Mar Dels. During my time with the band, I’ve learned and performed many classic rock hits. One of the best-known dance/party bands in San Diego, the Mar Dels continue to play at private and public events locally, nationally, and globally.

*** Lesson Details ***
I give my guitar students a solid background in right and left hand technique. This includes finger picking technique for the right hand as well as flat picking. It’s important for students develop a correct left hand position, if they wish to continue to play for many years without injury to the left hand. It’s also very important to young students who may wish to move into classical music. Most classical guitar music can’t be played well with a standard rock left hand technique, but all rock music can be played very well with a good classical left hand technique.

Most of the studies I use with my students are songs, scales and arpeggios from my personal library, so it won’t be necessary for my students to buy any books right away. However, if students want some additional materials to review, I can suggest some titles.

I emphasize the quality of sound that the student produces with the instrument. Many musicians feel that playing a piece of music is like running a 100-yard dash. I prefer that my students play at a comfortable tempo and create beautiful sounds, rather than rushing through a song simply to show an ability to play fast. I feel that it’s very important to practice any new piece or exercise at a slow tempo till it can be played well with relaxed hands. When the tempo is gradually increased, one acquires beauty with speed.

Within the first three months, the average student should be able to play some open position chords, bar chords, and arpeggios, and be able to improvise over a chord progression using four or more notes from at least one pentatonic scale. I like my students to learn at least one guitar solo (a piece that features guitar either solo or with accompaniment) within six months that they could play for their friends or parents. If the student’s goal is to use the guitar to accompany their voice, they can learn to sing and play at the same time. This is a special skill that takes time to master, and is something that I have done for years. I’m happy to share my ideas on how to develop this skill with my students.

Ultimately, the progress of the student depends on their talent level and their desire to acquire skills. If a student is interested in only one style of playing, I am happy to focus on it; however, I have a very broad skill set on the guitar and I like my students to develop as many techniques as possible.

*** Equipment ***
Depending on the student’s interest, I bring either a steel string or a classical guitar, and I prefer that the student also have an appropriate instrument. If it’s an introductory lesson for a beginning student, I can bring an instrument for them to use for the lesson.

*** Specialties ***
Since 1982 I have played guitar in The Mar Dels, a popular dance and party band so I am familiar with most pop, blues & rock styles of playing.

I have always loved the classical guitar and I am especially interested in good technique and tonal quality.

Jesse has been teaching me ukelele and my husband guitar for the past few months. I had never picked up a ukelele before I started, and at the end of my first lesson he had me playing a song! He works great with absolute beginners (like me) and with those who have been playing but want to hone their skills (like my husband). He comes to our house, is always on time, and is a great teacher. I would recommend Jesse to anyone.

Dillon is a first rate guitar instructor!

I've taken lessons with Dillon for 5 months, and he has helped me make tremendous progress. I was lucky to find Dillon because my music interests are all over the place. I wanted to learn about fingerstyle, soul, jazz, blues, Latin music, music theory, transcribing for bands. Dillon helped me with all of those. He's the kind of person whose has really studied the guitar and can distill the music from many styles into a few simple ideas for the guitar, and explain those ideas in a memorable way.

I'll continue taking lessons from him, and would recommend him as a teacher to anyone looking for a teacher with charisma.

He is always willing to switch it up each lesson depending on how I am feeling that week and I really enjoy working with him. Dillon is extremely talented and dedicated to music which is really great, because starting out can be hard. I would highly recommend Dillon to anyone!
