Matthew G.

Carlsbad, CA

About Matthew

A drum instructor since 1988, I'm a graduate of Musicians Institutes Percussion Institute of Technology (P.I.T.) and hold a Bachelor of Arts from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo.

I teach beginning to advanced drums to students of all ages. Before relocating in San Diego, I was a full-time instructor for The Drum Circuit Drum School in San Luis Obispo where I was teaching 200 lessons a month. Originally, I'm a native of the Los Angeles area where I taught for the Van Nuys and Alamany High School music programs.

I've been lucky enough to study with
some of the music industry's very best educators including: Steve Houghton, Jeff Porcaro (Toto), Joe Porcaro, Casey Schurell (Frank Zappa) Efrin Torres (Latin and World), Chuck Flores (Jazz Legend), and Ralph Humphrey. These professionals provided me with the foundation for a teaching career that is now into its 25th year.

Outside the practice rooms, I'm an on-call, independent performer / contractor and clinician. Some of my credits include performances/recordings with Jon Anderson of Yes, Award winning songwriter Maia Sharp, (Bonnie Raitt, The Dixie Chicks), nationally recognized blues band Pryor Baird and the Deacons, and many other noteworthy talents. I've also performed for various stage productions in the Los Angeles area, such as Little Shop of Horrors, How to Succeed in Business, and Once Upon A Mattress.

Currently, Matt can be found performing with what many call "the ultimate Santa cover band" Santana Ways as well as a number of other musical projects.

I work hard to implement teaching techniques that encompass all styles of drumming and performance. Sight reading, rudiments, chart interpretation, soloing, hand/foot control, independence, and working in a band are just a few areas of focus. It may sound like it's difficult - but you can do it all and I'll prove it to you. 25 years of teaching experience has not only taught me patience but has given me the tools to encourage, develop and refine the abilities of any student. (And that means you :)

I am proud to endorse Sabian Cymbals and Vater Percussion.

*** Lesson Details ***
Don't worry. First things first, you're going to make mistakes so don't be afraid to. If you don't make any mistakes during a lesson, you can go ahead and teach me. I'm really laid back with my approach to lessons: we'll talk, we'll play, I'll explain a few things and boom - you're playing' drums better than ever.
If experience has taught me anything, it's that a student can not be forced to practice. However, even the younger students understand the idea of "you get out of it, what you put into it". I pride myself in being able to make lessons enjoyable and thereby the student is going to want to learn more and in turn, practice more. I will give you all you can handle - when you're ready.
Playing to music is essential - it's what we're going to strive to do right? Students should try to have an MP3 player of some sort: Ipod, ipad, smart phone etc.. I'll bring one just in case so we can plug in, listen to your jams and play.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students should have their own drums. Minimum of a practice pad and Drum Sticks. (Available if needed). Music paper and a folder or binder.

*** Specialties ***
Drummers need to be versatile and more often than not, versatility is limited by two factors: physical independence and music interpretation. Out of the gate, I focus on these two hugely important aspects of modern drumming so that the student may better pursue their desired style with as much freedom and knowledge as possible.

Jesse H.

Del Mar, CA

About Jesse

Jesse H. plays guitar with The Mar Dels, one of San Diego’s best-known dance and party bands. But he’s more than just a rock-and-roller — he’s studied jazz and classical guitar with other master musicians.

His lessons focus on developing:

- Right and left hand technique
- Finger picking and flat picking
- Tonal and sound quality
- Playing and singing
- The ability to play a solo
- Chords, scales, and arpeggios

Jesse’s broad skill set allows him to teach a variety of styles, though he’s happy to focus on one particular style if that’s what the student prefers.

Don’t miss this o
pportunity to take guitar or ukulele lessons from one of the top musicians in San Diego.

*** Overview ***
I studied jazz guitar with Peter Sprague and classical guitar with Celin Romero. While at UCSD, I studied with Pepe Romero in master classes. In 1982, I became interested in classic rock and founded my band, The Mar Dels. During my time with the band, I’ve learned and performed many classic rock hits. One of the best-known dance/party bands in San Diego, the Mar Dels continue to play at private and public events locally, nationally, and globally.

*** Lesson Details ***
I give my guitar students a solid background in right and left hand technique. This includes finger picking technique for the right hand as well as flat picking. It’s important for students develop a correct left hand position, if they wish to continue to play for many years without injury to the left hand. It’s also very important to young students who may wish to move into classical music. Most classical guitar music can’t be played well with a standard rock left hand technique, but all rock music can be played very well with a good classical left hand technique.

Most of the studies I use with my students are songs, scales and arpeggios from my personal library, so it won’t be necessary for my students to buy any books right away. However, if students want some additional materials to review, I can suggest some titles.

I emphasize the quality of sound that the student produces with the instrument. Many musicians feel that playing a piece of music is like running a 100-yard dash. I prefer that my students play at a comfortable tempo and create beautiful sounds, rather than rushing through a song simply to show an ability to play fast. I feel that it’s very important to practice any new piece or exercise at a slow tempo till it can be played well with relaxed hands. When the tempo is gradually increased, one acquires beauty with speed.

Within the first three months, the average student should be able to play some open position chords, bar chords, and arpeggios, and be able to improvise over a chord progression using four or more notes from at least one pentatonic scale. I like my students to learn at least one guitar solo (a piece that features guitar either solo or with accompaniment) within six months that they could play for their friends or parents. If the student’s goal is to use the guitar to accompany their voice, they can learn to sing and play at the same time. This is a special skill that takes time to master, and is something that I have done for years. I’m happy to share my ideas on how to develop this skill with my students.

Ultimately, the progress of the student depends on their talent level and their desire to acquire skills. If a student is interested in only one style of playing, I am happy to focus on it; however, I have a very broad skill set on the guitar and I like my students to develop as many techniques as possible.

*** Equipment ***
Depending on the student’s interest, I bring either a steel string or a classical guitar, and I prefer that the student also have an appropriate instrument. If it’s an introductory lesson for a beginning student, I can bring an instrument for them to use for the lesson.

*** Specialties ***
Since 1982 I have played guitar in The Mar Dels, a popular dance and party band so I am familiar with most pop, blues & rock styles of playing.

I have always loved the classical guitar and I am especially interested in good technique and tonal quality.

Ghazal M.

San Diego, CA

About Ghazal

Music is a tool for spiritual progress of every human being.

I started Piano when I was 8 years old. My siblings were taking lessons at that time and hearing them play it made me fall in love with Piano, therefore, my parents had me get started in taking lessons as well. I have been playing Piano for about 15 years now and it started to become part of my everyday life. I have had four different teachers for piano and they were all amazing teachers. One of my private piano teachers was a student of Iran’s most popular pianist and composer, Emanuel Malek Aslanian. I also had an amazing Piano
instructor back in Iran who made me become an expert in techniques as well as enjoying the melodies. I mainly play and teach Classical music. Beethoven and Mozart are my favorite composers and I enjoy playing their pieces very much.
I have been teaching piano for about 4 years now and it is very joyful. I love communicating with my students and do my best to help them discover their talents and interest. I want the students to enjoy what they learn and play.

I also have a BS in Biological Sciences from University of California, Irvine. Biology also taught me how Music has such great influences on human body and soul. It relaxes people and help them get through difficulties. Being a Bio students and teaching Piano at the same time was the best thing that ever happened to me, that's why I really want everyone to experience music in their lives and get touched by it.

I also speak Two languages; English and Farsi. I am Persian and was born and raised in Iran. I moved to the USA when I was 15 years old.

I cannot wait to start working with you and teach you to my best ability what you desire to learn.

*** Lesson Details ***
One of the most important tools in my teaching is to get to know my students well. I try to maintain a really close friendship with my students. I want to know what type of music/style my students are interested in and make sure I bring out their talents and teach them the necessary techniques as well. Students need to enjoy what they play and I make sure that they do. I also talk to my students about their goals and what they want to achieve by learning Piano and motivate them to go for what they want to learn.
Piano should be joyful and exciting. I hope that my students learn the techniques as well as their style of music after being with me for a while and I do my best to discover that in them.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a Piano at home.

*** Travel Equipment ***
students should have a piano/keyboard available at their homes. They should be able to buy their own books as well once I choose a book based on their abilities for them.

*** Specialties ***
classical music

Niki has been teaching our son for a year since he was 6. He has learned so much in the last year- she does a great job of starting with the basics- sight reading, music theory, fingering. Her quiet way keeps him calm but also pushes him to learn. Most of all, he really enjoys the piano and looks forward to lessons!

Ms. Niki is a wonderful piano teacher! She is kind, patience and very knowledgeable. She makes learning fun yet knows when to "push" her students along. Our daughter responds well to her "non-pressured" style. She has been our daughter's piano teacher for over four years now. With Ms. Niki's guidance and loving support, our daughter can now play the piano and reads music fluently! We are pleased with our daughter's progress and would highly recommend Ms. Niki! Our daughter loves her and wouldn't want any other piano teacher!

Our 7 yo daughter have had Niki as her piano teacher for the last 2 years. It has been a great experience. Our daughter looks forward to every class. Motivation to practice on a daily basis is always a challenge at this young age, but Niki has instilled in our daughter a passion for piano. I love to hear my daughter practice her songs every day and go to her classes well prepared and motivated. This is something achieved only by an excellent teacher!

I am happy to give Niki my strongest recommendations!
