Broadway Singing is my passion! I've played piano on Broadway for 4 shows (Wicked, Mean Girls, Motown, and The Color Purple). And yet, teaching singing is just as rewarding.

I focus on technique (low breaths, engaging support muscles, steady stream of air on the exhale...), pitch (the first step is to hear it!), and musicality - how to express not only the dynamic contours of the music, but also how to tell the story compellingly.

I also love working on Acting While Singing. So often, performers will act wonderfully until their songs, then drop out of character once they start singing. Many directors have said "I'd rather have an actor who can't sing than a singer who can't act". To improve this, we'll look at how to use a lyric specifically and personally in order to stay in the moment.

I would love to help you discover yourself inside the songs you sing. Whether your goal is Broadway, community theater, or simply to have fun (all equally noble aspirations), I welcome the opportunity to help you connect with your work on the deepest, most authentic level.

NOTE: I only work with students who are age 16 and up. If you have a child who is just under 16, feel free to reach out and we can talk.

About Zak S.

Hi, I'm Zak! I'm guessing you're here because you love singing. Well, so do I!

Small world.

My experience ranges far and wide: I've played piano on Broadway for Wicked, Mean Girls, Motown, and The Color Purple; I've music directed middle school productions of Zombie Prom and the new Beatles musical; and I've coached multiple Broadway actors, including a woman who, as a result, booked Elphaba in one of the major regional productions of Wicked. You could say I've seen it all (you'd be wrong, though; that's impossible)!

Vocal Coaching is my passion. I love helping people discover themselves inside the songs they sing. Whether the goal is Broadway, community theater, or simply to have fun (all equally noble aspirations), I'd welcome the opportunity to help you connect with your work on the deepest level.

NOTE: I only work with students who are age 16 and up. If you have a child who is just under 16, feel free to reach out and we can talk.

Zak is an amazing teacher for those who want to take their singing to the next level. His methods help the singer to greatly improve their ability to express intent and feeling while singing, among other things. To put it simply, Zak's teachings make the difference between good singers and fantastic singers!

I would highly recommend Zak if you are looking for a piano instructor. He is not only a very talented musician, but an exceptional teacher. My son was a beginner piano student at 11 years old and Zak was able to create lessons that not only held his interest but had him begging for longer and more frequent lessons. Zak took input from my son about what he was interested in and tailored his lessons to meet my sons needs. My son learned more than just how to play songs. Zak taught music theory, cord progressions, proper posture on the piano bench and so many other things that go into playing beautifully. My son is interested in composing and Zak, as an accomplished composer was able to give him invaluable insight and feedback. We feel very lucky to have had him as a teacher and highly recommend him.

Zak is an excellent piano teacher! He is very effective because he really sees things from the student’s perspective. He is quick to see problems and to offer solutions. He is very knowledgeable as well. And, he makes the lessons fun and enjoyable. I highly recommend Zak!

Zak was very helpful in teaching our daughter to read music, learning songs that interested her, and getting her interested in writing songs! He was engaging, patient, kind, and encouraging during every lesson. Zak even helped her relax emotionally during the pandemic!

Working with Zak is an absolute joy! Zak is very attentive, clear, and supportive through it all. Anybody would be lucky to have him as a vocal coach, not only for the improvement and growth he helps provide, but the mutual celebration when I finally “nailed it”. Definitely take lessons with Zak if you want a fun, productive, and caring work environment.

10/10!
