Improve your Cello skills with an experienced musician from the Indianapolis Symphony and Curtis Institute of music

An experienced performer and teacher, I have been teaching privately since 2014. I am a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and a former member of the Indianapolis Symphony. I usually work with intermediate and college students, but I have also worked with beginners. I am currently an Artist in Residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium and have an active performance career, which is why I now primarily teach online. My teaching philosophy relies – as it did with my own professors – in sharing my personal connection with the music and giving guidance that will both make you a more solid player technically, as well as a more capable and expressive musician. I use the same approach, regardless of whether you are pursuing music as a career or you're doing it just for the love of it (although I do also give advice on navigating the academic and professional landscape to those who want it). My main goal at the end of the day, is to help my students find a deeper and more natural connection to the music they love. To achieve this I help them develop greater freedom and facility on their instrument while also teaching fundamental musical principles.

I perform both in Europe and the United States, doing a little bit of everything from solo appearances, to chamber music recitals, to subbing with orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra. My teaching philosophy relies – as it did with my own professors – in sharing my personal connection with the music and giving guidance that will both make you a more solid player technically and a more capable and expressive musician. I use the same approach, regardless of whether you are pursuing music as a career or you're doing it just for the love of it. That being said, I do also give advice on navigating academic and professional landscapes to those who want it. I can help you prepare for any audition and can share my experience of applying to and participating in music programs and conservatories. My main goal at the end of the day, is to help my students find a deeper and more natural connection to the music they love. This will always be my focus, whether I'm helping you get to the next stage in your development or preparing for an audition/recital. To achieve this I help them develop greater freedom and facility on their instrument while also instilling fundamental musical principles.

When I first went to Mr. Mowitz, I hoped to improve my cello technique above all else. As a result, Mr. Mowitz prescribed me a customized list of repertoire to practice that would help me focus on technique including the Popper etudes, the Bach suites, and the Cossman exercises. However, to ensure that our lessons would not purely be technique-based, Mr. Mowitz helped me understand the musical beauty behind more lyrical pieces such as the Boccherini cello concerto or the Saint Saens cello concerto while also demonstrating the techniques we'd been practicing in application to these concertos. Mr. Mowitz never assumes a fully comprehensive understanding of cello technique and musicality even for his intermediate-advanced students (which I would have considered myself as when I started to learn from him) and thus always has something new to teach as much as he reminds his students of the importance of certain fundamentals like a relaxed body when playing. I would say with full confidence that my cello playing significantly improved under Mr. Mowitz. His teaching helped me gain access by audition to advanced musical opportunities such as performing in the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and participating in the Snitzer Quartet in the Settlement Music School Advanced Study Program. These opportunities, in turn, and the musical "arts supplements" for cello that I eventually made furthermore helped me gain admission into schools including Harvard and Stanford, on what I would consider was largely a technical base taught to me by Mr. Mowitz. I truly hope that more people are able to experience the blessing of Mr. Mowitz's teaching!

Zachary is a fantastic cello teacher, I would highly recommend him to students of all levels. He is incredibly patient, and his passion for music teaching and performance is very infectious. He is very good at communicating nuanced ideas, both technical and musical, and can demonstrate them with ease. It’s been a great pleasure working with him!
