    About Yuiko N.

I recently graduated from the Master’s Program at the Manhattan School of Music with a degree in Violin Classical Performance. Teaching and performance have been life long passions. Music is a universal language transcending all forms of communication. Giving someone the opportunity to learn about music is one of the greatest gifts. I completed my undergraduate studies at Boston University in Music Performance where I also taught and led the second violin section of the Boston University All Campus Orchestra. The orchestra consisted of non-music major students ranging from undergraduate to doctorate. I assisted the conductor and was responsible for the preparation and proficiency of the violin section. I was part of the outreach program at the Manhattan School of Music where I taught group violin classes at the Children’s Zone Promise Academy Charter School in Harlem once a week. I prepared lesson material and arranged classical and pop music for the group class. The students who came were from family backgrounds of violence and were able to find peace in music. The disruptive students who would find themselves in the principal’s office would come to the weekly lesson begging to play Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” or “Frère Jacques” in canon form. In Japan, I taught private lessons to middle school students. I created lesson binders and handouts for my students. The binders were a compilation of etudes and exercises that I had consistently used with my students alongside with exercises I had composed. I have also used Suzuki material and intermediate concertos for solo repertoire. In 2012, I became a member of the conductor-less string ensemble called Shattered Glass. The ensemble was created by Manhattan School of Music students who were dedicated to re-imagining the concert experience and bringing classical music to all audiences. In February 2013, Shattered Glass did a three-day intensive educational outreach in Cinnaminson, NJ where we taught group classes at the public schools to students ranging from elementary to High school students. In addition, Shattered Glass played a Benefit Concert for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. These experiences have helped refine my skills in teaching students of all age groups, organizing and planning lessons appropriate to the level and capacity of the student, and sharing the love and gift of music through teaching. I hope to have the opportunity to work with you! Music is her life and passion! *** Lesson Details *** Music is the greatest gift of all! It is important to me that the student wants to take violin lessons and that the parent is supportive and committed to the student's musical development. Most of all, it is important that we have fun making music! For beginner level, I provide 30 minute lessons once a week. Within 3 months, the student will be able to read music and play songs on the violin. I create my own material for beginners and use Suzuki Volume 1 for solo repertoire. For intermediate level, I provide 30-60 minute lessons once a week. Within 3 months, the student will be able to play all major and minor scales, fluently read music, and play short pieces on the violin. I arrange and provide favorite pop tunes and use Preparatory Etude Books and Suzuki Books for solo repertoire. For advanced level, I provide 60 minute lessons once a week. Within 3 months, the student will be able to sight read, understand basic music theory, play all major and minor scales/ arpeggios/ double stops, and play big works including concertos. I will choose repertoire based on each student. *** Travel Equipment *** I expect the student to have a violin, bow, shoulder rest or sponge and music. I will provide the music from time to time depending on repertoire *** Specialties *** Classical music, suzuki method, chamber music
