Yoon Jae enjoys a multifaceted career as a conductor, arranger, pianist, and artrepreneur. As Founder & Artistic Director of Ensemble 212, Mr. L has built one of today’s finest ensembles based in New York. A dedicated champion of new music, Mr. L has conducted numerous New York and world premieres of works by award-winning composers including Mohammed Fairouz, Huang Ruo, Daniel Felsenfeld, Ke-Chia Chen, Texu Kim, Nina C. Young, and Jeffrey Mumford. Recent highlights include conducting engagements with the PRIZM Chamber Orchestra, and the ensemble mise-en 6th annual new music festival. In March 2019, he conducted a concert devoted exclusively to his own arrangements at the Maltz Performing Arts Center at Case Western University and served as cover conductor for the Philadelphia Orchestra this past summer. Mr. Lserved as the Principal Conductor of the Albano Ballet Company which commissioned his chamber arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker.

Mr. L’s arrangements and transcriptions have been performed throughout Asia, Europe, North and South America by leading orchestras such as the Baltimore and Phoenix Symphony Orchestras. Praised by audiences and critics alike, David Patrick Stearns of the Philadelphia Inquirer claimed his orchestral transcription of Mendelssohn’s Octet “Incorporated winds and brass…..intelligently.” The New York Times described his chamber version of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony as “Illuminating….. with solos leaping out in unusually bold detail.” He is currently engaged in “The Mahler Chamber Project” to arrange all the symphonies and Das Lied von der Erde for chamber orchestra.

A native of New York City, Mr. L is a 2nd generation Korean-American. He received degrees in piano and conducting from the Mannes School of Music where he was awarded the N. T. Milani Memorial Conducting Fellowship and the Peter M. Gross Fund. He also studied at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg in Austria. During that time, he served as Assistant Conductor to the Salzburger Kammerphilharmonie. It has been a pleasure having Yoon Jae as a teacher. He took a very personalized approach with my ear training, developing a solid idea of my strengths and weaknesses before honing in on specific issues. What sets him apart is that he's adamant about reinforcing the musical applications of the skills I'm developing, and he challenges me in ways that never feel dry or superfluous. I've seen great improvement in the relatively short time I've been with him.

I'm an adult beginner on the piano with some musical background. After studying with Yoon Jae for just over a year, I have made great progress in my knowledge of theory, technique, artistry, and effective practice habits. While he maintains high standards and teaches in a thorough and rigorous style, he is always supportive and encouraging. He is also tech savvy. If a student brings the vision and the work ethic, Yoon Jae will help him or her go far with his extensive knowledge and quality teaching.

I began taking piano and theory lessons with Yoon-Jae several months ago. He is incredibly patient (a virtue for any teacher), knowledgeable and accommodating. He pays close attention to your playing and points out the subtlest details in your technique while offering simple methods to help you improve. His fool-proof approach to tackling scales, arpeggios and the like make it simple and accessible. I can't recommend Yoon-Jae enough. If you want to take lessons seriously or just for fun, you will find no better instructor.

I just completed a 5 lesson bundle with Yoon and was very impressed. He paid close attention to my playing and pointed out many small details in my playing. It is the small details that make the difference. He has very deep knowledge regarding music in general and what is needed to advance forward. I will continue on with Yoon.

I studied piano for 3 years with Yoon Jae, from when I was 25-28 years old. I'd started playing piano a bit in my early 20s, but never very seriously. I am mainly a drummer and percussionist, and studied music in college. I was looking for someone to take my piano playing, reading, and technique to closer to that of a professional, rather than an amateur/hobbyist which was where I was at. Yoon Jae really did that. I'm not going to be touring and playing Carnegie Hall anytime soon or anything like that, but I can really confidently say that my lessons with Yoon Jae raised my level a lot. My understanding of touch, nuance and phrasing grew a lot. My reading, though still a weakness, improved a lot, and my technique improved tremendously. By the end of our time I was playing Chopin's Fantasy Impromptu. I think if my 22 year old self saw a video of my 28 year old self playing that piece I would be floored. Though I don't take lessons with him anymore, now when I work on a piece on my own I still use many of the approaches, strategies and practice techniques he taught me- and I think that is the most valuable thing I got from him. He really developed a much deeper awareness, nuance and focus in that I can take with me for the rest of my life as a musician. He really is a great teacher.

Yoon Jae is a phenomenal teacher and person. As a teacher, he pushes you to be your best musician, yet remains understanding. He guides you in creating insights into your strengths and weaknesses, so that you'll continuously improve. He also provides you with tips and techniques to get the most out of your practice. He's also incredibly nice and fun to talk to.

I was concerned someone of such abilities to possibly have difficulty dealing with beginner students. Just the opposite is true. Without compromising the highest of standards, his friendliness, patience, and welcoming approach to new students makes it an absolute pleasure to work with him.

I'm so glad I ended up with Yoon Jae for my very first violin lesson. He took me through the first steps - as basic as holding the violin - really carefully and not at all condescendingly, even though I'm an adult who never even learned to read music. In fact, he couldn't have been more patient. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone who wants to learn violin in a supportive atmosphere!

Yoon is engaging, motivating, kind and easy to work with. I'm an adult beginner and am enjoying the process of learning to read music, playing the instrument and gaining a greater appreciation for music generally. Highly recommend.

I am learning musical arrangement and composition and I feel very lucky to have found Yoon Jae Lee. During the first lesson I had with him, he said one simple thing that forever changed the way I view how I write music. I like the way he listens carefully and uses his knowledge and understanding of music to point me in whatever direction I need to go. He is thoughtful and respectful of my goals and musical ambitions, helping me to achieve what I am aiming for without inserting himself into my creative process. In addition, he is very patient. I can't imagine a better teacher for me.

Yoon Jae is patient and creative teacher. Even when I can't understand the material, or am not performing my highest capacity, he patiently teaches me. He never moves too quickly or get angry. He is also creative. Anyone can stand and review a material, but he can explain it in a way that I can easily understand and remember.

I enjoyed Professor Yoon Jae's lessons fully. As an amateur pianist, I was able to study under Yoon Jae privately for a semester and learn things I wished to learn about. Yoon Jae understands how to teach and tutor to his students needs which varies among musicians at all levels. I believe his knowledge and experience can greatly benefit those who wish to continue learning a musical instrument as a hobby as well as for those studying musical performance.

Yoon Jae Lee is a professional musician who has been teaching my daughter since she was 6 years old. He is very engaging, fun, and patient. My daughter has learned many important concepts from him and it shows it her school work too.

Mr. Lee tutored me privately in the violin for a very reasonable price, as well as instructed my orchestra. He was very attentive, patient, and drew on a variety of good basic teaching books which, in combination with his instruction, helped me learn a lot.
