    About Yael S.

I am a teaching and performing artist who loves to play drums. I started out as a clarinet player in the school bands and moved on to drum set in my senior year of high school. With an interest in music from around the world, I found the hand drum (djembe) an instrument that brings people together and is accessible to all. The music of West Africa is rich, intricate and exciting! I co-found Marafanyi Drum, Dance & Song for all ages and abilities. Using West African music and movement as a back round to create educational programs and performances. Marafanyi supported Congolese guitarist Dominic Kanza and his African Rhythm Machine at MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art), Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, Malian guitarist & singer Habib Koité and Grammy Award winner, Angélique Kidjo fromBenin at SOPAC (South Orange Performing Arts Center). Other percussion Instruments: stick drums (doundoun, songban, kenkeni), krin, shekere

Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music and movement program for children from birth through age 7, it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement. Classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. All children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment supports such learning.

    New Jersey Performing Arts

It is a way of introducing and teaching students about music on a level that they can easily comprehend. Musical concepts are learned through singing, chanting, dance, movement, drama and the playing of percussion instruments. Improvisation, composition and a child's natural sense of play are encouraged.
