I am extremely proficient in math. To gain understanding I teach the hard way and then the easy way. Then we put it in motion with how your teacher wants it done. I can use items from around the house for learning. 

I am very patient, knowing that not all students "get" math. There are many different students that are at many different levels. Why a particular student is not doing well is not important, how we can get them to open up their mind to absorbed the information is. 

I also look to see what kind of math learner you are. Does the student learn basic math using basic principles, or do they have that urge to get right into it and analyze it, or does the student ask the ever important question, why.
