Music Theory with Walter A.

My name is Walter! I'm a lifelong musician, and hold an Associate's Degree in Music from Sierra Community College in California, a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Sacramento State University in California, and a Master's Degree in Music from Northwestern University. I spent a summer studying music in Italy, and am an alumnus of the Aspen and Tanglewood Music Festival training programs. As a performer, I have spent 21+ years performing as a pianist, 12+ as a violinist, 10+ as a conductor, and 8+ as a classical singer. I have spent 10+ years working as a teacher in both private and classroom situations, including over 6 years teaching at the college level. I've worked with students of all ages and all skill levels, and from all walks of life. I believe music is universally accessible, and that anyone can learn to play an instrument or to sing. I love helping students find confidence and proficiency in music, and helping people of all ages find their voice! My teaching style is wholistic. I believe that great music making comes from a well practiced technique, an understanding of music history and theory, and an emotional connection to the music you're making; and so I ensure that each student is gaining an understanding of each of these elements appropriate to each student's age and skill level. I also believe that music should be fun and fulfilling, and that students learn best (and are more likely to stick with it!) with teacher who is encouraging, helpful, and positive, and who acknowledges progress!
