Von McDade was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended Vincent High School where he was a standout player for the Varsity basketball team.
After graduating from high school and only playing his junior year during his high school career, Von attended Iowa Lakes Community College. During his two year career at Iowa Lakes he was a two year starter on the Men’s basketball team.
While attending Iowa Lakes Von earned several honors and achieved many milestones. He was named the first Basketball All American in the school history. He was named First Team NJCAA Region Xl Iowa All Region, NJCAA Region Xl All Star Team, All Tournament Team in Region Xl, NJCAA All Star Team- ABAUSA and the first and only inductee into the school Basketball Hall of Fame. He graduated in 1998 with a A.A. in Arts and Sciences.
After earning his AA degree, he went on to Oklahoma State University and the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee each for a year respectively. At UWM, Von continued his successful basketball career being named the 1991 Wisconsin College Player of the Year, District lV Men’s Basketball First Team, the UWM All-Century Team 1990’s and being Drafted in the second round by the New Jersey Nets of the NBA. As a result of his play he has garnered numerous records and achievements while attending UWM. Briefly listed, second leading scorer in division one basketball with 29.6 points per game, scored 50 points at Illinois breaking the Assembly Hall record, third in the nation in steals and three pointers per game, tenth in the nation three pointers made (3.4) per game and twice name National Independent Player of the week.
