- Teaching since:
I'm a professional clarinetist with a passion for helping beginning and intermediate clarinetists achieve their goals. I have a bachelor's degree in Clarinet Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and 3+ years' private teaching experience.
I specialize in fostering an autonomous, flexible learning environment. This means I recommend and advise based on each student's unique needs and objectives in a non-coercive manner, rather than require results from a prescribed course. Especially for younger students, I encourage ownership of goals.
Lessons with me will always be enjoyable, because I believe people learn best when they're stress-free. I'm happy to match the pace at which you want to learn. Whether you're looking for guidance on technique, equipment, clarinet literature, local competitions, general musicianship, or all of the above, I'm excited to share my expertise and love for the clarinet with you!
I welcome questions and would be happy to chat with any interested students or parents.
A little about me:
I've traveled and lived in many parts of the world, but I went to middle school and high school right here in Tigard. Besides teaching clarinet, I'm a freelance writer, personal chef, and dog trainer in the Portland area.

The IAPWE or International Association of Professional Writers & Editors is an organization dedicated to providing helpful resources to writers and editors and disseminating helpful ideas and resources across the greater professional community in the form of outreach, blogging, networking and thought leadership.
In addition to providing free resources for our members, we are always seeking talented writers and editors to help create engaging, locally relevant, educational and inspirational content to help support our outreach efforts. We believe in paying our writers and editors a competitive wage, unlike many of the “content mills” and comparable low-paying clients and/or companies.
The IAPWE is also dedicated to bringing the most updated, legitimate and vetted writing and editing job opportunities to its members.
The International Clarinet Association is a community of clarinetists and clarinet enthusiasts that supports projects that will benefit clarinet performance; provides opportunities for the exchange of ideas, materials, and information among its members; fosters the composition, publication, recording, and distribution of music for the clarinet; encourages the research and manufacture of a more definitive clarinet; avoids commercialism in any form while encouraging communication and cooperation among clarinetists and the music industry; and encourages and promotes the performance and teaching of a wide variety of repertoire for the clarinet.+ Read More
Our 7th grader in intermediate band has so far taken 5 lessons with Vanessa. She is a fantastic teacher and I would definitely recommend her! She is very kind and patient. She has a way of really encouraging my son to practice longer and work hard at the techniques she works on with him. We are a family of musicians, and we notice that our son is off to a great start, working on his embouchure, long tones, and chromatic scales. Thank you Vanessa!+ Read More
Our daughter Leda has had nothing but great things to say about her lessons with Vanessa over the past year. As a parent, I love that Leda really looks forward to her lessons every week and enjoys practicing more than she did before. Vanessa has also been very communicative and accommodating with our busy family schedule. Thanks, Vanessa+ Read More
