About Matthew I

Please note * 30 and minute lessons are only offered for online lessons. In person lessons require a minimum 1 hour lesson charge. I offer In-Studio Lessons and Jensen Music and Co. in Santa Barbara, In-home lessons around Santa Barbara and Goleta, and online zoom lessons for Guitar (acoustic and electric), Music Production with Ableton or Logic Pro software, music theory, and songwriting. A custom curriculum is created for every student based upon what they'd like to learn, and their experience level. If the student doesn't know what they'd like to learn, a curriculum will be provided. Here's my bio - Matthew teaches performance and composition of traditional and modern finger-style guitar including classical, bossanova, original and pop music. He also teaches modern music ; singer-songwriter acoustic, R&B/soul, pop, funk and rock. As a guitarist, teacher and freelance music producer, Matthew has lived and worked in Los Angeles for over 5 years producing and teaching music production. He collaborated with Grammy-winning Producer Darryl Swann, co-producing and mixing some of his productions, including the song Pink Sunshine (feat. Xara) . He studied music production with private mentors in Los Angeles and London. Matthew studied classical guitar with University of Oregon's John Jarvie, earning his Associate of Arts from Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. He continued studying classical guitar at Columbia College Chicago with Norman Ruiz and performed with the Latin Ensemble. Matthew performs solo guitar at various events, weddings and venues with a setlist including classical guitar, bossa nova and original finger-style compositions. *** Lesson Details *** For instrument lessons- I'm a patient teacher that's passionate about guitar and helping students reach their musical goals whether they are casual players or serious musicians. For beginners, I use Hal Leonard Guitar Method and Christopher Parkening Guitar Method instructional books, along with paper handouts and sheet music with tabs to learn modern music. I believe it's important for everyone to learn the fundamentals of music to create a strong base of skills to inspire one to continue playing and learning music throughout one's life. During lessons, I like to teach various modern songs, classical guitar songs, picking patterns, finger picking patters, developing a chord vocabulary, improvisation, scales and music theory. I teach nylon string acoustic, steel string acoustic guitar and electric guitar and bass. I believe the most basic goal for a guitar student is to be able to play a song in its entirety, whether it's by themselves or with other musicians/music students. I believe that some of the most important music skills are learned while actually playing with other musicians or performing for others. It is crucial when learning an instrument to be able to play in 'real time'; playing music with a steady sense of rhythm. For Music Software Lessons - Logic Pro X , Ableton Live, Garageband - Topics I like to cover - capturing correct recording levels.....editing, adding effects, basic mixing, automation .....creating drum grooves with loops, samples and midi drums..........songwriting and music theory.........Live capabilities using Ableton (for backing tracks and live performance)........Quick commands ( keyboard short cuts ) to easily navigate through the software..... Cancellation Policy - 24 Hours notice must be given to reschedule a lesson.

Matt taught me some great techniques to play fingerstyle guitar. Enjoyed the selection of songs I learned. He also showed me how to improve my production in Ableton Live.
