Learn to play jazz (tenor banjo) or bluegrass (5-string banjo) with me!

I teach beginner and intermediate 5-string banjo and beginner, intermediate, and advanced tenor banjo. Let's start with the tenor banjo. That great instrument is an integral element in New Orleans jazz and trad. jazz. I'll have you playing great old jazz standards in no time. Now, let's talk about the 5-string banjo. I will teach you to play 5-string banjo in the traditional three-finger style of the great Earl Scruggs. I'm a longtime pro musician and a longtime teacher. I take a practical approach to learning that emphasizes the fun and sense of togetherness that are such vital elements of playing music. Let's go!

    About Tony L.

Hello! I'm Tony L., a 60 year old former high school English teacher (retired a few months ago) and longtime music teacher and pro musician. I love classic movies (Humphrey Bogart, De Niro, Woody Allen, Paul Newman, Diane Keaton, Judy Garland, etc.), books (Orwell, Kerouac, John Kennedy Toole, John Irving, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, etc.), and all kinds of music (Frank Sinatra, Ramones, Earl Scruggs, George Jones, etc.). I love teaching with a "no stress" approach. This isn't school. We're going to HAVE FUN, and we’re going to learn together at the same time. I love sports. (The Yankees, all UAB teams, and the New York Giants are my favorites.) I love eating out and meeting friends and spending time with my big, loud Sicilian-American family. In short, I'm just a regular guy who loves music and loves people.
