I attune to each students needs, whether they are visual, pattern, or verbal learners. I do not subscribe to any "Piano 101" books; instead write practice exercises on a computer program or supply actual pieces or piano books, attuned to each student's needs. Lines on a page are boring for many; I add color to the notes on the page to help teach beginners the practice of sight reading, as I myself have synesthesia. I also encourage students to learn whichever music they want: if one wants to learn ragtime, I will teach ragtime; if one wants to learn jazz, I will teach jazz; and if one wants to learn classical, I will teach classical. I hope to expand students' involvement in music and enhance creativity. I also understand how important listening is, and encourage students to listen. But amidst all this, I strongly believe it is in both of our best interests to not assign busywork. Piano is more than a just skill; it is a hobby, a meditation practice, and it can be a tool for your life in both internal and external affairs.

About Tim O.

Hi I'm Tim!

I know that with most teachers, there's usually some type of stereotype involved. Some are the "strict teacher", some are the "cool teacher", some are the "lazy teacher" and others are the "teacher who can't teach".

Well I just want to be the teacher that works for making you learn or improve your piano skills, and being a teacher that works means that I must be friendly, helpful, and mentoring to any students. I also know the bad habits that can develop around music—trust me, I've been there—so I will to my best to encourage good habits while at the same time making learning piano a fun and engaging experience.

A lot of times when people hear "music", they either think of pop music and the Billboard Hot 100, or they think of exquisite "geniuses" like Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. Well spoiler alert for the three of those, they're all German. And for many students, they're so, so boring (although I quite like them). Music can come from any part of the planet, in any time period, and by any culture. Piano is a European instrument, but it can be used for all sorts of music, be it American Jazz, Pop, Ragtime, Classical, or World Music. Whichever genre or song is most exciting for you, the student, I will teach you that genre or song.

I once upon a time was a little four-year-old with a light up CASIO keyboard that taught you how to play certain pieces, and believe it or not the first song I could play with two hands was a simplified version of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag". This wasn't the easiest song on the keyboard by far, but boy was it exciting when I could get in the groove!

Aside from that, this is your curriculum, not mine. I am only here to make you better in your piano skills, not make you better in my piano skills. You tell me where you want to go, and I will do my best to get you there. No "Piano 101" books for me, I will make the exercises for you depending on your ability.

Oh, and by the way, I also play french horn, trumpet, upright bass, and electric bass, and have marched in a drum and bugle corps for 3 summers. Together, to put it bluntly, this means that I love music, and would love to introduce you to any of these ways of making music if you are so interested.

Wherever you are in searching for a teacher, I hope that whoever you wind up with, they are a great fit and you can have a great relationship with them. But I will stay tuned (pun definitely intended) if you think that I could be that fit!
