About Tara S.
Hello New Student,
My name is Tara. I am a Drawing and Painting Arts and Arts and Crafts instructor located in Waldorf MD. I teach drawing and painting for ages (4 to Adults) in Charles County and Prince Georges County Maryland. I am also a Substitute Teacher for the Charles County Public Schools. My area of expertise is working with pastel portraits of people and animals both on dry and wet paper or canvas, and Acrylic Painting.
I have taught Basic Drawing to children ages (5-8), and Portrait Drawing to children ages (9-17) at the Michael's Arts and Crafts located in Waldorf MD. Two of my portrait artwork (Barack Obama, and Louis Armstrong) was featured in our local newspaper the "City Paper".I have also received recognition for my other portrait artwork (Innocent Eyes) at the Portrait Society of Atlanta GA. I was selected to participate as an artist at the Black Heritage Art Show in Baltimore, MD, and the International Art Show at the National Harbor in Oxon Hill, MD. Recently my acrylic painting (Butterfly Landing on a Cone Flower) will be on display at the Lowes House Office Building in Annapolis, MD ( January 6, 2020 to April 6, 2020).
I am excited about teaching drawing and painting to anyone who wants to learn how to draw or paint, or to improve on their unique art techniques. In my art course, I offer a variety of art lessons. Each week the student will learn a different technique which includes Arranging a composition, Blending Techniques, Color Mixing, Color Theory, and Time Drills to improve art skills, and eye and hand coordination. The student will also learn how to use charcoal, pencil, pastels, oil pastels, watercolor pencils, colored pencils, markers, and acrylic painting on specialized drawing paper, and canvas.
I received my Associates Arts Degree in Studio Art from Prince Georges Community College in 1985. I also received my Bachelor's of Art degree in Visual Performing Arts from the University of Maryland Baltimore MD in 1987.
We have had a wonderful experience with Ms. Tara. The kids enjoy her class and love drawing. Thanks for sharing your skills, Ms. Tara.
Tara was wonderful when working with my boys. She was always on time, never cancelled and was always smiling. She was gentle and guided them through each project. I would highly recommend Tara to anyone who wanted a personal, quality lesson in art.
I have a company called Your Elegant Portrait located in Southern Maryland. My clients mainly consists of homeschool groups ages (4-14). My art lessons are not just for the homeschool groups, but to anyone ages (4 to Adults) who wants to learn how to draw and paint, or to improve on their drawing and painting skills. Each week the students learn a different art technique on how to duplicate a drawing or painting from a photograph, or still life objects using basic shapes, lines, and tonal values. The students use a variety of dry and wet medias such as (watercolor pencils, colored pencils, charcoal, pencil, pastels, wet based color markers, watercolor pans, and acrylic paint).
Accokeek Christian Cooperation (A Ton of Fun Fine Arts Homeschool Program)
As an Art Instructor for a large co-op group, I found it very challenging to create art projects for two age groups (4-8) and (9-14). The art projects were based on the skills of the students. Some of the projects included using found objects outside such as Nature Art. I gathered wet leaves and let them dry inside on black construction paper. After the leaves dried they were then pressed down with an iron with waxed paper overtop of the leaves. The students were then asked to design a Nature scene with the leaves to replicate the art style of Vincent Van Gogh. Other projects included (Paper Mache Bowls, Acrylic Painting, Cubism Style (Pablo Picasso), Landscape Watercolor Painting (Edgar Degas), Oil Pastels (Fruit Still Life), Modeling Clay Project, Paper Christmas Tree Ornaments, Stuffed Brown Bag Turkey Project.
Michael's Arts and Crafts (Waldorf, MD)
I was under contract with the Michael's Arts and Crafts. I created a six week program for children and teens ages (5-17) were we met one day per week for one hour. Each week the students would work on a variety of art techniques such as shading, 1 minute sketches to 5 minute sketches, contour and gesture drawing, composition drawing, light and shadow, and negative and positive space. In 2005, the Michael's store decided not to continue with offering contract work to outside employees.
