Most educated voice teachers are classical leaning, wanting the student to always sound "pretty" leaving out the textures and power, including those raspy sounds, used by commercial pro-singers for fear it is somehow damaging. Not true if done correctly. I can teach you how. I am out of the box and get results. My lessons are fun, and you'll be making all kinds of quirky noises. So be prepared to laugh a lot while you are replacing the limitation of old habits, some taught to you by well meaning teachers.

I rarely do any type of scales exercises or warmups during the lesson unless I think it will help you. We mostly work on songs, make weird noises, and laugh a lot. You will be surprised on what fast results you will get with my unusual approach. By the end of each lesson, you will hear and feel a difference. And in just a few weeks, you will be surprised by the amount of improvement. I promise! It will be fun!

Did you know your voice is a choice? You are not "stuck with" what you think you sound like. No one is "born with it." Rethink preconceived ideas about your voice, and you'll begin to realize your full singing potential.

My coaching is based on anatomy, acoustics and phonetics. I will NOT give you hours of boring classical sounding scale exercises. I can help anyone learn to sing better, add style, texture, strength and range to any voice. I teach a variety of modern and old school contemporary styles, but specialize in Hard Rock, Folk, Americana, and Singer/Songwriter. And yes, you can learn to sing them all!

I'm a Certified Voice Technician, Contemporary Vocal Coach, a Singer and a Songwriter with 20 plus years experience.

About Tamis B.

I have been teaching music in some form or other since 1987, focused on voice since 1991 when I got my degree in music/vocal. But the education didn't stop there. All that college stuff only taught me classical or musical theatre styles, and I wanted to be a rock star. HA! I couldn't figure out why after all those lessons I still did not sound like Lita Ford. ;)

So.... off I go to find the answers and... oh wow, contemporary singing is SO different. I had to unlearn 13 years of classical training. Believe it or not, contemporary singing is NOT rounding vowels, diction, opening the throat, lifting the soft pallet, projection, support and (heaven forbid) singing from your diaphragm. It does not take hours of boring classical scale runs and breathing exercises. Rasp and distortion are not "unhealthy" to be feared and avoided. What?! I felt so mislead...

(Side note: Advice for you if you want to sing styles that are NOT classical leaning, don't waste time like I did. It really is not the same and does not carry over, and most skills are quite the opposite. There's no reason to take ballet lessons if what you really want is to play basket ball.)

I am Certified Voice Technician, meaning I know how the voice works on a mechanical level which is why you will get faster results and can learn to sing various styles (no, they are not born with it and you can learn how to do it, too.)

I have performed with live bands, from Hard Rock to Jazz, and of course the local Karaoke bar! People never know what genre I'll be doing because I am able to sing diverse styles like folk, pop, country, hard rock, punk, metal, swing and jazz.

In 2016, I completed an intensive training course on vocal exercise design at one of the largest music schools in Manhattan: New York Vocal Coaching. Also, I was the first US teacher to attend an Advanced Voice Teacher Training Retreat from The Vocal Process in the UK in 2019. And in 2020, a recent alumna of Boston's Berklee College of Music's On-line Certification program in songwriting.

But my education is never ending. The more I know, the better I can help my students. I love to learn and continue learning on a daily basis, not exaggerating. Really, daily! I belong to study groups with teachers from all over the world and of various genres so I can keep up to date on the latest voice pedagogy.

My father and mother were both teachers: father in mathematics and drafting, and mother in arts and crafts. A good balance to come from making me left-brain/right-brain: analytical but playfully creative.

Book a lesson and we can bust some myths right away and set you on the path you want to be on. Be prepared to laugh a lot while learning. I am fun, encouraging and authentic. And yes, I can now sing like Lita Ford!

Tamis is very perceptive and is able to figure out what is not working and offer solutions. Rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach, Tamis gears the lesson to the individual. I already feel and hear a difference in my ability to control my volume and vibrato and improved resonance and tone. I look forward to my next private lesson and also her group lessons where she has created a supportive community.

I'm really glad I chose Tamis as my coach, because she tailored the lesson and the excerises to what I need and showed me how to achieve the results that I wanted instead of teaching a set formula. I also like her non-judgemental and easy going approach to teaching. I'd say my level is beginner+ right now but I know I'll be making great progress soon with her support.

I took in person and online lessons from Tamis to learn how to sing for fun. Tamis has a knack for listening and identifying the vocal help I needed. She works with each student to help them reach their goals. With specific singing exercises and practice, she helped me improve my vocal range.

Her classes are educational , and fun! I highly recommend Tamis to learn how to sing and in different music genres!

I love that Tamis is "outside the box," not your typical run of the mill vocal coach. She hones in on what you like and nothing is off limits. She makes you feel comfortable, and she is a lot of fun besides having so much knowledge and expertise about the voice and the anatomy of your voice, etc. I definitely recommend her!

If you really want to learn to sing or improve your singing while having fun, Tamis is the teacher for you! Because of covid-19, I have been home bound for the last year and taking lessons with Tamis both in group and private on line. I finally got to sing for a friend in person and she could not believe how much better I had gotten. It dose not matter your style of singing she has you covered.

I had been taking vocal classes for several years and had developed a smooth jazzy vocal style. Through Tamis I had a chance to sing with a Rock Band. Too Smooth!!! I worked with her privately and she broke the song down syllable by syllable to inject some rasp and some attitude into a Crissy Hynde favorite of mine. THAT IS ONE OF THE MOST FUN THINGS I HAVE EVER DONE AS A SINGER. Kudos to Tamis! She isn't limited to any particular style so go ahead and try something different with her coaching.

Tamis is a wonderful teacher! She listened to my singing and then gave me exercises to correct my problem. I was very breathy like a leaky tire. I highly recommend her.

Tamis is extremely talented and an excellent instructor. She listens to your voice and tailors her instruction to exactly what YOU need, no one-size-fits-all here! Because of this personalized approach I felt that I progressed very fast. Her instructions are clear and easy to follow. Best of all she is a joy to work with!

Extremely knowledgeable, positive, interesting, fun and professional, a difficult balance to achieve as a teacher, but Tamis incorporates it all! She seems to know what each student needs to hear/learn at the right time to increase ability and potential.

Totally changed my thinking and overall approach with my voice. It’s not just about singing scales, but understanding how the anatomy plays a role in your singing no matter what your style is. I would highly recommend Tamis for any type of vocalist out there.

Tamis is so amazing as a voice teacher. She has a lot of various skills from her long career in singing. I would definitely recommend her to anyone because of how well she knows how to teach and also various methods of learning. She is definitely somebody who knows what she’s doing. Some things that she has taught me have helped with different methods of singing, such as learning chest voice, head voice, and breath distortion.
