Music Theory lessons with an expert musician and teacher

Theory shouldn't be boring and pointless. I love teaching theory in a way that not only makes sense, but is immediately applicable to music and actually helps you be a better musician. I teach theory in a couple different ways: the cheapest way for you is a 15-minute lesson where we go over some specific topics, and then I give you a bunch of stuff like podcasts, YouTube videos, and handouts to digest and come back with next week as I explain whatever is confusing to you. The other way is to have a full session where we apply theory to your instrument of choice--you still might get homework, but most of the work will be done in lesson. And of course, all of my instrumental lessons will have theory included in them as well. Theory is supposed to be a tool, not a torture device!

Hi! I'm Sylvia--I play piano, violin, and viola professionally, and guitar, flute, and clarinet amateurly. I'm in school to become a music therapist, since I've seen how powerful music can be in treating a huge variety of illnesses, both physical and mental. My teaching core values are: -praise > criticism -students' goals trump teacher's ego -technique should be practical and logical, not "because this is the way it's done" -kids are smart humans -music theory is cool -there is no one right learning style I want to help my students develop their skills in a way that respects them and their strengths, helps them achieve their goals, and aligns with their personal learning style, no matter how different that is from mine. Music is AWESOME; I'm excited to get to learn about it with you!
