Become an expert at classical piano with lessons from an experienced instructor

Piano shouldn't be boring, it shouldn't just be Bach, and it shouldn't be endless, pointless exercises. Piano should be fun, interesting, and practical. Theory, scales, and exercises should be helpful, practical, and directly tied into pieces a student is learning, and each student should get the opportunity to work on pieces they're interested in, not just keep to standard repertoire only. I tailor piano lessons to each student, their goals, and their musical tastes. While I use the Faber Piano Adventures curriculum, students are always welcome to bring in extra pieces to work on or ask for help finding something specific. Every student will learn the basics of sight reading, playing by ear, improvising, and harmonizing--then work more on whatever they are interested in. As a professional pianist, I will teach practical skills that can actually earn my students money when they get advanced enough, such as reading lead sheets, playing with the timing of a piece, and accompanying skills. I take kids, teens, and adult learners. I have experience working with kids with disabilities including Down's syndrome, trauma/PTSD, ADHD, cerebral palsy, and more. For typically developing kids, I require that they be old enough to read and count--for kids with disabilities or developmental delays, I can adapt as needed.

Hi! I'm Sylvia--I play piano, violin, and viola professionally, and guitar, flute, and clarinet amateurly. I'm in school to become a music therapist, since I've seen how powerful music can be in treating a huge variety of illnesses, both physical and mental. My teaching core values are: -praise > criticism -students' goals trump teacher's ego -technique should be practical and logical, not "because this is the way it's done" -kids are smart humans -music theory is cool -there is no one right learning style I want to help my students develop their skills in a way that respects them and their strengths, helps them achieve their goals, and aligns with their personal learning style, no matter how different that is from mine. Music is AWESOME; I'm excited to get to learn about it with you!
