Surya offers lessons in beginning piano, teaching songs, scales and arpeggios, music theory, reading and writing music notation, aural skills, chords and more. Students start with fingering numbers, identifying notes and simple call and response. Students learn to play melodies in both their left and right hands, as well as together.

After learning a series of simple melodies, the student learns to begin reading the Grand Staff, finding middle C and other notes, and to identify rhythmic notation such as quarter notes and half notes. By the end of Faber Level 2 the student can play and read waltzes, Christmas tunes, folk songs and more. Surya uses the Faber Piano Adventures books and teaches Primer Level, Level 1 and Level 2.

Many students prefer to take Beginning Piano in conjunction with or as an add-on to voice lessons or drum lessons.

Hi! My name is Surya and I've been teaching private lessons since 2003.  I'm a music educator and I got my Bachelors of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory.  I teach voice, drums and beginning piano.  My focus has been primarily on teaching young people.  I love connecting people to music and helping them bring their whole selves into the process.
