Beginner, IntermediateOnce we have a handle on the basics, I'll arrange music hand tailored for my student based on what music they like to listen to with their ability in mind! I've done music for students all ages and many genres. A few examples of favorites are The Polar Express movie soundtrack music, Back to the Future soundtrack, Bad Guy by Billie Ellish, We Are Number One from Lazy Town, and many others.
I hope you're excited about these lessons as much as I am because nothing makes me smile more than being able to play the music I like, and helping others achieve that same ability. I am confident that with these lessons, you'll be in that position in no time. We both like music, so we already have one thing in common. I look forward to meeting you and seeing what else we have in common!
About Steven M.
Hello, I'm Steven! I've been a band geek since 6th grade, and am currently 21 years old. I started playing trombone back then and have since picked up and learned every brass instrument I could get my hands on. I've played with bands of all shapes and sizes, including Symphonic, Marching, Jazz, Rock, New Orleans parade, and more. I've played in school settings with Osborne Middle School, GACS High School and Kennesaw State University and in public performances with bands like The Black Sheep Ensemble (New Orleans style parade music), The Windy City (Chicago cover band), and Trombone Choirs. My favorite genre since middle school has been jazz but I have many close seconds in Funk, Rock, Pop, Chamber music, etc.
I started teaching after class in High School with younger students that wanted help with their playing tests. Over time I realized that I could relate musical concepts with other interests and experiences to help students understand them more quickly and with a better grasp. Around the same time, I also realized that students like to play the music they are interested in. This is fine if a student likes the music the band is playing, but sometimes I find that the music being played in typical Band class might not quite match the music the student is interested in.
I pride myself in offering personalized music to my students that gives them something THEY want to play, rather than what the band wants them to play. I have found that this encourages individuality not only as a player but also as a person. At the end of the day, my main goal is to get my students to the place where they can play the music they want to play with the sound they are looking for. It's always a pleasure for me to meet musicians and I look forward to meeting you and helping you play your favorite music!

Our first lesson was a success!

First lesson online with Steven. My 13 yo son was positive about his experience. They took the time to talk trombone & listen to Other artists trombone music. This approach was a natural and appropriate hook em’ for my son. Looking forward to the hands on playing and making music together in subsequent lessons.
