    About Stephen N.

My interest in music came from the fact that my mother was a classical pianist and I took lessons for a couple of years until the lure of rock and roll pulled me toward the guitar! My tastes later expanded to include Jazz and I studied at University of North Texas (received Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies). Through my studies there I became interested in solo classical guitar and was later offered a teaching fellowship which allowed me to return to the university and branch out into composition, transcribing piano music for the guitar and further theory studies as well as completing a Master of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance. Since then, I have enjoyed playing solo guitar, in small chamber ensembles, in pop cover bands, jazz combos, and especially writing, performing and recording with my own band, Fury III. I find that this diversity helps me to find common musical ground with most students. I have also taught recently at Tarrant County College and Brookhaven College, and have helped intermediate students prepare for initial or transfer auditions to university programs. *** Lesson Details *** I will work with you regarding your personal expectations and musical tastes and goals, and I will design a daily practice schedule for you based on the amount of time you can set aside for practice. I try to keep a variety of activities in lessons and I have many handouts to supplement the method book. I can also work on songs you like, transcribing them from CD or youtube. I find that playing duets makes the reading exercises more musically satisfying, whether on piano or guitar. I feel that having clear-cut goals and understandable assignments makes it easier for students to maintain a consistent practice schedule. It is more beneficial to practice for a short time each day than doing one marathon session one or two days a week! I *** Studio Equipment *** I prefer teaching in studio since I use piano as visual aid for many theory examples. Dedicated music room. Grand piano, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer electric piano, tuners, metronome, music stands, chairs. Comfortable seating for parents. Students only need instrument. (and book to be determined) *** Specialties *** Jazz, classical, rock, folk-style fingerpicking, flamenco, electric bass guitar
