About Stephen H.

Hi, I'm Stephen.

For those with professional aspirations, you will fast track your singing, acting, and songwriting career with my TIYA tools.

It embraces a unique, athletic teaching and training style, which has been honed over 15 years as my specialty is professional, artistic development. I can help you in multiple ways:

I'm a vocal trainer, guitar teacher (beginner and intermediate levels), acting coach, and songwriting mentor. If you...

Have Broadway dreams?

Write hit songs?
Or even need help taking your public speaking and/or sales presentations to the next level, then you are in the right place.

Play guitar: Learn strumming, simple chords, common pop progressions, dexterity exercises, advanced barre chords, and more.

Explore songwriting: Catchy hooks, thoughtful lyrics, concise hit song structures, all while learning about music production and developing yourself as an artist and producer.

Acting: Build a foundation of truthful spontaneity and flowing emotional connection using theatrical monologues, TV/Film scenes, Self tapes and more.

Voice-over: Learn about voice acting and how to apply it to Commercial, video game, promo, animation projects ,etc.

Learning to act is also excellent training for aspiring recording artists to help tap into emotional vocal delivery and connect with their song(s) and fans.

Career Strategy: If you want to learn more about auditioning, acting in movies, performing in musicals/plays on Broadway, writing your own songs, and developing show-biz career strategy, (headshots, meeting agents/managers, etc) I help TIYA members every day achieve their artistic dreams.

I have been singing since I was 3, anything and everything from Michael Jackson to Elvis Presley to Luciano Pavarotti. Originally from Colorado, I studied music/theatre, as well as vocal pedagogy at The University of Colorado at Boulder, where I graduated with highest honors. I made my Broadway debut in "The Phantom of the Opera" at age 24. I also performed in "Chess in concert" as a featured rock tenor soloist at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway with Josh Groban. I have understudied and performed lead roles in the first AEA National Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s "Whistle Down the Wind." Regionally, I have played many lead roles all over the United States in productions including "Les Miserables," "Miss Saigon," "The Wild Party," and "She Loves Me."

As an ASCAP recording artist, I play both piano and guitar. Currently I am working in the studio working with a Multi-platinum producer and world-wide full production team on my first pop/rock album. I often sing on demos for producers and write songs with and for other artists in many different genres. (pop. hip-hop, country, neo-soul, etc.).

As a TV/Film actor, most recently I was on set with Marvel's "Luke Cage" on Netflix, and I played the lead role of (Abraham) Lincoln in the SAG-AFTRA short film, "These Honored Dead."

I also have played lead roles in 3 SAG-AFTRA short films, as well as the comedic lead in a SAG-AFTRA Web-series pilot, "Bodega Nights." I was called back for producers as a Series Regular for both Cinemax and HBO.

TIYA clients include (aspiring) Broadway performers, Film and TV actors, singer-songwriters, voice-over artists, pageant contestants, news anchors, dancers, comedians, corporate sales presenters, as well as karaoke enthusiasts, and songwriting hobbyists.

My TIYA members have performed on television in Smash, Glee, and venues around NYC ranging from The Underground, Le Poisson Rouge, Drom, Cornelia Street Cafe, Arlene’s Grocery, to the Broadway productions of Ghost, Sister Act, Evita, Wicked, West Side Story, South Pacific, The Phantom of the Opera, and Rent to name a few.

*** Lesson Details ***
We will always work on whatever you want.

For guitar--Learn chord shapes fast, your way around the fret board, master strumming, and quickly build your coordination putting it all together to play songs!

For Singing, as a vocal technician/trainer I am like going to the gym for your voice. My exercises are safe, simple, and most importantly, I teach you how to practice correctly.

For ACTing, we can explore both the foundation itself, building your acting chops with monologues and scenes, as well as learning how to audition-- the tricks of the trade mastering the camera frame and how to create memorable auditions for TV/Film.

For Songwriting, we can explore the fundamentals of both lyrics and music, as well as catchy hooks, production, and song structure.

You may use my time however you wish (Voice, Acting, Songwriting, or Artistic/Career guidance).

Most vocal sessions will usually be a combination of strengthening/conditioning exercises, and then exploring/performing a song.

For guitar, dexterity, chord shapes, strumming, transitioning smoothly from one chord to another all while learning songs!

The TIYA vocal training method is uniquely my own as it combines both Bel Canto and Speech Level Singing. Emphasis is on developing a relaxed, released, authentic vocal timbre to sing in any style. Concepts explored include: Coordination, Registration, and Intonation. Chest, Head, Edge, and Pharyngel registration, 2 instruments in 1, posture, breath management, vocal cord adduction, trigger phrases, ring, consistency, and more.

Most ACTing sessions will be theatre monologues, TV/Film sides and/or On camera auditioning craft.

Career consultations usually include how to get an agent, headshots, branding, and marketing to align your artistic dreams with a strategy for success.

Stephen is an amazing teacher. He has been super patient, thorough, and clear as I have just recently picked up a guitar for the first time. He does a great job and covering music theory as well as chords, strumming, scales, and more. His musical background is very well rounded and he uses great teaching techniques to get all parts of the brain involved. Highly recommend!

Stephen has definitely provided me an insightful way of analyzing songs and for writing my own music myself. He is really helpful and gives you many eye opening advices and tools that encourage you to develop your artistry. Furthermore, he provides a friendly and non judegemental atmosphere, which is essential for a student. I totally recommend him.

Fantastic teacher with an actual process. A great progression of exercises that has increased my range, intonation and relaxation while singing in the first few weeks!

If you are looking for someone with an actual process instead of just "lets try this exercise", Stephen is your man

I had been singing for over a decade before taking my first lesson with Stephen. I had never had a singing lesson before and was unsure how they would go or even how much they would help me. Within the first five minutes I knew I had made the correct decision to go with Stephen. He broke the voice down in a way that made total sense to me, and allowed me to focus on the individual parts of the voice before putting them all together. After just 3 lessons, I am already starting to feel a difference in breath support and confidence in hitting softer notes, two things I have always struggled with. I fully intend to continue working with Stephen to grow as both a singer and an actor. Would highly recommend to anyone from beginner to professional.

Stephen is a very thorough singing teacher. After 5 lessons, I know so much more about singing than I even thought there was to it. I already feel like I improved a tremendous amount, and I have fun in his classes. My range increased, my breath management improved, and the quality of my voice is also much nicer. I can only recommend Stephen.

I booked my first 3 shows!

I started my vocal journey with Stephen just about two years ago, from scratch. Under his professional guidance, I have already landed my first 3 regional theater shows, AND my first major role of Val in "A Chorus Line"! Stephen's lessons are always fun, efficient, and he has a keen sense on how to best help me in my professional growth. As a dancer who sings, I look forward to seeing what lies ahead in my vocal training and career!

Excellent - transformed my voice

I've been studying with Stephen for almost 3 years and in that time my voice has developed immensely. He is in the business so he truly understand the market and helps prepare you for auditions. Through customized exercises to fit my needs I find I can now sing songs I once thought were "out of my range". Very flexible and available teacher, who can also help with acting and career consulting.

About me: I am an actor, dancer, writer, choreographer…an artist; as well as an acting teacher and coach. It's been a life long dream to sing and sing well. I was cast in the chorus as a kid a couple times, but really had no clue about my voice; how it worked or what to do with it. As far as I knew/experienced I was an average to bad singer, with little to no vocal talent. I thought singing was a "God-given gift". You either had "it" or you didn't. I knew my Dad could sing, but my mom was a terrified singer and somewhat terrifying to hear. I thought I was somewhere in between, like my eyes, half blue, like Mom, half hazel, like Dad. And nothing I could do about it. Until I met Stephen...

About Stephen: Working with Stephen regularly has changed all of this. Stephen doesn't just magically "get you to sing". HE TEACHES YOU HOW YOUR VOICE WORKS. He helps you to develop what he calls "an intimate relationship with YOUR voice". This knowledge literally takes away the mystery and "magic" of singing. He systematically guides you through a very CLEAR PROCESS that unlocks YOUR voice. And he empowers you to become YOUR OWN TEACHER. Stephen has taught me that MY VOICE IS A MUSCLE, JUST LIKE ANY MUSCLE IN MY BODY. That it can be trained, refined and conditioned, just like any muscle in my body. He got me to believe this through my OWN EXPERIENCE that when I put the work in I WILL GET RESULTS. Just like when I work on my physical coordination and strengthening in Ballet class, my jumps and turns improve; getting higher, more precise, faster, lighter, whatever the case may be, when I work with Stephen on my voice, my range grows, the quality of my vocal timbre gets richer and fuller, there's more ring and resonance; EVERYTHING IMPROVES. Stephen's clear technique has given me great confidence in my ability to sing and to continue to improve as a singer. I highly recommend him to anyone, from absolute beginner to pro. I am truly positive you will be happy with the results. And enjoy the process.

About Stephen's Character:
Stephen is a consummate professional. Extremely reliable, respectful and kind. If I had children of my own, I would feel 100% comfortable sending them to him. I have recommended Stephen to several of my own acting students, as well as fellow dancers and strangers on the occasion that the topic arises. Because I believe in his method and I respect and appreciate the way in which he offers his knowledge and embodies his words.

Stephen is Passionate, Inspired and Inspiring when he's sharing his work with his students. You can tell from his conviction, brilliant insights and compassion that he created his method from his own triumphs and failures, breakthroughs and frustrations as a singer and singing student. It seems he's spent his whole life learning what he's now refined into a very clear method that he can impart to ANY eager student in a very short amount of time. I feel very fortunate and thankful to have found such a gifted teacher.
