Hello! My name is Steph and I can't wait to hear you play! I will absolutely enjoy teaching you regardless of your age or playing ability. :)
Beginner students: We will mostly work on pieces out of Kathy Blocki's flute method books as well as exercises composed by myself to make sure your fundamentals are solid from the beginning. Plan on learning new notes and rhythms each lesson as well as having scale and playing assignments. You will learn a lot each week while having a super awesome time :)
Intermediate students: We will be working on honing the fundamentals (tone, technique, articulation) through various etudes and intermediate solo pieces, depending on playing level. Vibrato will be introduced as well as phrasing, breathing, and everyone's favorite: intonation! Weekly assignments will include memorizing scales and preparing all pieces covered in lessons. Prepare to take notes and laugh frequently at my jokes!
Early-Advanced students: We will learn about body awareness and work on playing without tension. We will work on developing tone colors (warm, sweet, bright, hollow, etc.), developing technique through daily exercises, as well as further developing the fundamentals. We will work on repertoire for your auditions, more advanced solo pieces, etudes, and technical exercises. Weekly assignments will include practicing at least 45 minutes per day to have material fully prepared for the lesson. You will get really good at taking notes!
Always remember: You will get out of lessons what you put into them! The magic always happens during practice. The more you practice, the more I am able to teach you, and the better you will play!
A little bit about myself: I will be attending SUNY Purchase College in August to start my Master's degree in flute performance! I recently graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors from Bloomsburg University with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Music, where I focused on flute performance. Upon graduating, I have been freelancing in PA where I play in pit orchestras for musicals, solo recitals at churches, and chamber orchestras for formal gigs. I maintain a studio of 10-12 flutists of all ages and abilities, and I have taught more than a hundred lessons (and loved all of them!) I have studied many major classical works as well as modern works with extended techniques. I was principal chair of Bloomsburg University's Wind Ensemble and Concert Band for three years, and I was actively involved in our New Music Ensemble. I would love to help you improve your playing and I truly can't wait to teach you :)
The National Flute Association, founded in 1972, is the largest flute organization in the world. Approximately 5,000 members from more than 50 countries join together in person, online, at conventions, informally and in forums, through publications and classrooms, in performance, in friendship and collegiality. Guided by its goals to encourage a higher standard of artistic excellence for the flute, its performers, and its literature, members include leading soloists, orchestral players, jazz and world music performers, teachers, adult amateurs, and students of all ages.+ Read More
In 1897 at the University of Maine, ten senior students, two faculty members, and the school president created an honor society that was different from the few others then in existence-one that recognized and honored excellence in all academic disciplines. Under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann, the group formed the Lambda Sigma Eta Society, which was later renamed Phi Kappa Phi from the initial letters of the Greek words forming its adopted motto: Philosophìa Krateìto Photôn, "Let the love of learning rule humanity." Phi Kappa Phi's mission is "To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others."+ Read More

I had Stephanie as a tutor in music theory all the way through my theory classes in college, and she is a great help. She is very friendly and extremely patient, and helped me come out of my shell and feel comfortable in my theory classes. I cannot stress enough what a wonderful bright person she is, and how great she is at what she does!
