Music is a beautiful art as well as a wonderful outlet that allows everyone of all ages to express themselves freely and creatively. My goals as a music educator are to help students experience the joy of learning and playing music while becoming a well-rounded and well-versed musician. If your goals are to become a professional musician, audition for a performance, music program, or school, or to learn music for the first time, I can guide you through each step of your journey. I aim to build a personal relationship with each of my students, and to provide a comfortable, challenging, fun, and vibrant learning experience as well. I enjoy approaching all lessons this way so that all of my students can excel to their fullest potential, and I look forward to helping you achieve your musical goals. ♫

I have extensive experience playing the piano, and playing jazz and classical music. I specialize in piano lessons for beginning through advanced pianists in classical, jazz and any popular styles of music. I am extremely passionate about Music and sharing music education, and if you are interested in taking lessons, please feel welcome to contact me.
I am a member of ASMAC, and the Music Teachers Association of California, and my students can also participate in Certificate of Merit Evaluations.

-Learning how to read sheet music, chords, lead sheets, etc.
-How to improve the musical ear through listening and Ear Training
-Piano Technique
-Music Theory (Jazz and/or Classical)
-How to interpret music with ease
-Developing good practice habits
-Composing your own music
-Improvising and more!

Required Materials for lessons:

-Blank manuscript paper notebook (available on amazon for very cheap)

My students will get so much more than just piano lessons! They will have a resource full of experience, knowledge, and patience from a professional pianist and composer and music mentor working in the music industry today. Besides learning a relaxed and fun piano technique that will allow you to start playing right away, I also teach students how to build more advanced technical skills, play with emotion and finesse, develop very accurate musical ears, find new and challenging repertoire, learn to accompany a soloist or a band, learn different styles of music, perform in front of audiences, understand music theory, and also how to write music. I would love to work with you so that you can develop your musical ability and your skills on the piano. I can help you learn how to really play the piano as a means of self expression, so that you can enjoy starting to learn music from day one.
If you are a complete beginner, it's never too soon or too late to build up your musical abilities, and I would love to help you with your musical journey. We will learn how to start playing right away, while learning piano technique, training the musical ear, playing melodies and chords on the piano, understanding how the instrument works, and learning to play music by ear. I will show you how to read chords and sheet music, to understand music theory, improvise, and even write music if you would like. If you are a pianist with prior experience, I would love to help you hone your skills further and develop the path that you have already started!
I believe in a personalized approach to teaching, based on building a relationship with each student, and I encourage all of my students from the start to express themselves musically and emotionally, so that they can keep their imaginations and interests engaged in all of their musical studies. I place equal emphasis on achieving the student’s long-term goals and enjoying the process of learning, while making progress. We will set goals that you’ll be excited about, and we’ll work towards them together.

She has performed at major venues such as the Valley Performing Arts Center, where she conducted a full orchestra for the premiere of her orchestral piece “A Path Unfolds,” and sang with the CSUN Jazz A Band. She has also performed at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, the Colts Stadium in Indianapolis, the Alamodome, the Georgia Dome, the Hall of Liberty and at Los Angeles Community College where she premiered her latest piece “Emerge” with a jazz combo, which featured legendary drummer Gene Coye, and a six-piece horn section.

Active as a collaborative artist, Sophia performs as a pianist with different ensembles professionally, including the Westlake Village Symphony Orchestra, and the New Valley Symphony Orchestra. In 2014 she was a featured soloist and won the Fred Sanford Gold Medal in Percussion with the world famous Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, and was a featured soloist in the Winter Drumline group POW Percussion.

While mastering her craft in classical music, jazz, film scoring and composing original music, Ms. Sophia is going to graduate from Cal State Northridge with a Bachelor’s of Music in Media Compostion this May 2018. She is a recognized student at Cal State Northridge and received the Igor Paltsev Memorial Composition Scholarship in 2015 for three of her original works entitled Forward Motion, Drifting, and Contemplation.             Sophia has been playing the piano since the age of three, and acquired her Grade 8 Certificate in Piano from the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM) when she was 14.  Upon graduating high school, she was awarded the United States Marine Corps “Semper Fidelis” Award for Music Excellence, and under the instruction of acclaimed pianist Lou Touman, she auditioned and was accepted as a Piano Performance major at CSUN, at that time studying with the world renowned pianist and CSUN faculty member, Dr. Salas.

While currently working on composing for her ensemble which she is the pianist for, performing with several groups professionally, securing an internship, and teaching lessons, she says that being so involved with Music "is only possible because I am passionate about everything about Music, and I plan to be a part of Music and share this fondness with others for the rest of my life."

Sophia is absolutely the best piano teacher ever! She's punctual, kind, and patient. She genuinely cares that I understand not just how to play the piano, but also the theoretical apparatus behind the music that I'm learning to play. I will take lessons from her until I'm taking a dirt nap.

As an adult trying to get back into playing piano it was hard for me to find the right fit with a piano teacher. Sophia displays a perfect balance of encouragement, intelligence, and professionalism in our lessons. Her hours are flexible, and she has so much to offer and talk about with whatever is I want to learn. Thank you Sophia!

Sophia was so kind and helpful. I wanted to get my 7 year old Josh involved in music and figured piano would be a good instrument to learn the basics on, especially since I already have a keyboard at home. Sophia arrived for his first lesson on time and was very polite. I sat in on the lesson and Josh was comfortable for usually being shy around girls. Sophia introduced him to basic technique and showed him some of the cool things a pianist can do. She even asked him what he liked to listen to and what he would want to play in the future, giving him a personal reason to practice. I hope he continues as long time and Sophia definitely makes that seem like a possibility. I cannot recommend her enough!!

Sophia has been teaching my grandchildren for two years now, ages 9 and 11, and they have grown so much since when they first started. It is amazing to see their progress week to week, and to hear all of the different music they have learned. We are all grateful for the time and expertise she has shared with us, and we look forward to all of the beautiful music in the future.
