Thank you for your interest in taking lessons with me. I've been teaching Russian classes for the Continuing Education program at Miami Dade College since 1992. I am a native Russian speaker and came to the U.S. from Minsk, Belarus in 1990.
Over the years, I have taught Russian 1, Russian 2 and Russian Conversation. I have also taught Essential Russian for the Berlitz Language Center in Miami. For each of the courses I developed special lessons using Professor’s Berlitz method of foreign language teaching through dialogue, phonetics and vocabulary.
I have my MS degree in Mathematics and Education and have taught Mathematics at FIU and MDC for many years, however, teaching Russian is my passion. I really enjoy having the opportunity to speak with students using my native language to help them achieve their individual goals and promote their individual strengths. Whether you are a beginner who has never studied Russian or a former student brushing up on old skills, I will provide you with the tools and information you need to speak Russian easily and effectively. Lessons will be customized to the needs and goals of each student.
When working with beginners, during the first lesson I show them that Russian is not as difficult as it looks. Russian pronunciation is actually much easier than English. Once you know the alphabet, you will be able to read. At the end of my first lesson I usually give a short dictation and students are happy to see that they can already write some simple Russian words.
When working with a textbook I ask students to improvise, to use new vocabulary to describe their specific situation. When giving lessons, I try to create an active environment, encouraging students to ask any questions they may have and keeping them focused and motivated.
Welcome to my lessons and I hope to see you soon.

Teaching Russian 1, Russian 2, and Russian Conversation
I studied Russian with Sofiya for several semesters at Miami Dade College and found her to be an excellent instructor. Caring, conscientious, and engaging, Sofiya is passionate about teaching and about the Russian language. She was always eager to offer advice, review any extra work submitted, and to immerse students in aspects of Russian culture as well. Sofiya is not only an accomplished instructor, but she is also a genuinely nice, outgoing person. I highly recommend her.+ Read More
