- Teaches students:
- Ages 5+ and special needs
- Teaching since:
I have been teaching since 1985. While pursuing an Associate's Degree in Education, I was a Pre-K teacher. I homeschooled all 5 of my children from Pre-K through High School. After my youngest children graduated in 2017, I taught Language Arts, Geography, Science and History at a Homeschool Co-Op for children ranging in ages from 5 to 18.
Between 2003-2007, I also pursued an education in Alternative Medicine; I am a Certified Master Herbalist, Nutrition Consultant, and Holistic Health Practitioner. The information I gained through these studies not only enhanced my family's health, but also enriched the overall learning experiences we had as a homeschooling family.
I am currently continuing my educational pursuit toward a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Language Arts, and specifically Writing has been my favorite subject since Elementary School. I wrote poetry, prose and short stories from Elementary through High School; I won several county and statewide writing contests. I was also an Assistant Editor for my high school's creative writing magazine. I have written articles for various homeschool newsletters and forums, several theses (plural of thesis) in the Alternative Medicine field, and have written a yet-to-be published book on the historical, cultural, medicinal, and culinary uses of numerous herbs.
Students will learn proper grammar, spelling and syntax necessary to become effective writers. Creativity and originality is highly encouraged. All lessons will be customized for each student based on individual learning style and goals. Learning is a process, not a product. Examples of Writing formats may include, but are not limited to, book reports, compare and contrast essays, personal journals, and original short stories.
Sheri's passion is teaching. She tailors instruction to meet the needs of each student. Every child learns differently and Sheri takes the time to determine the learning style for her students thus keeping them engaged.
My family had the pleasure of meeting Sheri in 2017 at our local homeschool co-op. My daughters, five and seven, took a number of classes with her ranging from US History, Earth Science, Grammar, and Current Events. Each course she taught was well thought out and properly prepared for the age group. She often kept the children engaged by presenting the material in a manner that appealed to them with hands on activities creating projects they could take home to proudly show off, to study from, and to take back to class to build upon.
In addition to the hands-on activities, she used techniques such as video and slide-show like presentations on a large screen television, educational websites, worksheets, magazines and books. Of the homeschool co-op teachers, she was one of the most professional and prepared. She often took on outside admin responsibilities with the co-op and was one of the few that brain stormed with the co-op founder in its earliest day to find creative ways to encourage homeschool families to attend the co-op, to develop a curriculum that included a wide range of ages, and to set rules to ensure the co-op became a well-run organization that respected the teachers, students, and the families.
Miss Sheri is certainly a great addition to any educational outfit.
