Overview

Sheila's interest in music began at the age of seven when she began private instruction in classical piano, and by the age of ten, she began playing the flute. Sheila received her Bachelor of Music with a degree in Music Education from the University of Redlands, where she studied flute with Sara Andon. There, she performed in the university's Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Orchestra. During her third year at university, she studied abroad at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemet, Hungary.

Sheila has performed in many different venues around the world such as Tivoli Gardens in Denmark, the Edinburgh Trade Center in Scotland, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge, CA.

In 2013, Sheila graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Masters degree in Flute Performance where she studied flute with Sandra Kipp. At CSUN, she performed in the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Northridge Flute Quartet, and various chamber ensembles. She currently resides in Irvine and teaches private lessons in flute and piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal as a music educator is to foster excellence in the art of music through private instruction. I have worked with students of all ages ranging from 5 to older adults.

In my studio, students will learn to read music and have a well rounded music education. This means that we will work on a variety of things such as music theory, music history, and a wide range of repertoire (from Beethoven to the Beatles!) While I have high expectations for my students, I do my best to keep the lessons relaxed and lighthearted. My hope is that the student is always engaged and interested during lessons.

My three expectations:

1. Come prepared both mentally and physically (this is especially important for flutists-- make sure to warm up prior to the lesson!)

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. This is non-threatening territory, I'm here to guide you and help you. Remember that mistakes happen, we're human. Just make sure that you learn from those mistakes so as not to make the same ones and grow from each experience.

3. For parents-- BE INVOLVED! I can't tell you how often I've seen younger students excel when their parents were proactive in the experience. This means encouraging them to practice, coming up with a rewards system, and sometimes sitting in on the lesson to take notes so that you can work on what we did during the lesson at home together. It's difficult for music teachers to compete with iPads, Playstations and television, so let's get creative together!

*** Required Materials ***
Flute students must own a well maintained flute, as an instrument that is out of adjustment causes frustration and can initiate bad habits. In addition, the student must also have a metronome and tuner, a music stand, flute repertoire, and an assignment book for me to write down each week's assignments.

Piano students must have a working acoustic piano or digital piano (not a keyboard) in their home for piano lessons. The student must also have a metronome, piano repertoire, and an assignment book for each week's assignments.

Sheila taught my son flute for the academic year 2013-14 in our home once per week. She was able to supplement instructions with what he was doing in school music. She had a great relationship with him and he looked forward to his lesson every week. He improved greatly in his music skills over the course of the year and was asked by Sheila to perform in a recital at the end of the school year. Sheila was a very good music teacher and her academic training was clearly reflected in her teaching a great plus! I would highly recommend her for flute lessons.

Sheila has been teaching my son for more than three years and my daughter for more than one year. Both have a wonderful connection with Sheila and have seen tremendous growth and improvement during the time they have been studying piano with her. She is always punctual and prepared for lessons.
While she has high expectations for her students, she is also kind and works very well with younger students.

Sheila is a great flute instructor. Her attention to detail and knowledge of flute performance help shape every flute piece we work on. She is very pleasant, understanding, and kind. She gives good feedback and sets reasonable weekly expectations. I have improved greatly in the time that I have been working with her. With Sheila, you will be looking forward to the lessons, instead of dreading them :)))!!

Great motivator and a wonderful instructor

Sheila has been working with my daughter for the past three years and I am very happy with the result. She is very patient and works well with children. I believe that if it wasn't for her my daughter might have lost interest in piano as children do with many things, however she rather looks forward to her sessions and seeing Sheila. When my daughter plays for us at the house it makes me very proud. Thank you Sheila!
