Music has been instrumental in my life for as long as I can remember. I began playing piano at the age of 5 and grew up in a big and very musical family. I also began clarinet lessons at the age of 10 and voice lessons at 14. I have been singing in various choirs since elementary school.
As the oldest of 16 grandchildren I've been surrounded by children my entire life, leading, teaching and caring since early days. Thanks to this environment, relating to students come naturally to me, as has an intuitive sense of teaching.
After graduating in 2000 from Kingston High School, (in the Hudson Valley - Kingston, NY) with a music sequence I went on to attend New York University, where I earned a B.A. in Psychology, focusing on Development Psychology, specifically. After graduating, I began giving piano, voice and clarinet lessons and soon went back to school for music, realizing how much I had been missing it.
After studying music education at San Francisco State University, I continued my studies at CUNY Hunter, earning my MA in Music Education in January 2011.
What I have learned from from my own music teachers throughout my life, comes through in my own teaching. I greatly value the contribution of all of my teachers, from those who started me off to those who taught me in adulthood. Their words and techniques can certainly be heard and felt in my own teaching, melding into my own style and personality.
As I ever look to find better ways of teaching, I set an example of excellence and gentle determination for my students. I encourage curiosity, steadfastness, dedication and enjoyment. I strive to motivate students so that they become excited about and dedicated to gaining new skills and achieving goals. I am extremely passionate about student success especially through music.

I'm an adult with no formal singing training. I was looking for a teacher who could help me gain some basic skills and answer my questions so I could sing more comfortably in public - and who was capable of holding the tender emotional space that singing brings up for me. Sequoia is a patient, encouraging, and approachable teacher. She meets me where I'm at, while also challenging me to grow - her feedback and ideas are specific, shame-free, and supportive, which is so healing for me. Working with Sequoia has helped me become more self-aware and confident in my singing as well as in other areas of my life where I'm being called to "use my voice" effectively.+ Read More
We took lessons for over 4 years and we loved it. My daughter has an amazing knowledge of music and a foundation that she can apply to any instrument. Best thing we ever did to advance our daughters music career.
