I provide a curriculum that includes technique, theory, performance, and composition and that incorporates the student's personal goals. I authored a book of Jazz piano scales and exercises that has sold thousands of copies.

About Sean V.

Sean Vigneau-Britt is a jazz pianist, composer, and teacher. He composes using a broad stylistic palette that includes work for musicians, theater directors, and choreographers. He co-founded the Brooklyn Composers Alliance and authored the book "Jazz Scales." He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College and a Master of Music degree from Brooklyn College Conservatory.



Sean studied classical piano at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT. He studied jazz piano and trumpet at Concord Academy, where he also studied music theory, Western music history, and jazz arranging.



At Sarah Lawrence College he studied composition, performance (piano, trumpet, guitar), theory (classical and jazz), Western music history, ethnomusicology, electronic music, and conducting. He studied jazz composition, arranging, theory, sight singing, and performance for a semester at the Bill Evans Piano Academy in Paris, France. During his last year at Sarah Lawrence he received the Presser Foundation Fellowship for outstanding achievement in music.



After working in San Francisco as a professional jazz pianist and private piano teacher, Sean moved to Brooklyn, NY, to work as a freelance composer. He received a Master of Music degree in composition from Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, where he composed for ensembles of all sizes, from solo cello to full orchestra. He received the Morton Feldman Award in Composition and the Nancy Hager Music History Prize.



Sean currently teaches music, works as a pianist and composer, and has co-founded the Brooklyn Composers Alliance.

Our daughter Sarah has been taking piano lessons with Sean for 5 years, both in person and now by Zoom. Sean is a wonderful teacher, firm and focused, yet kind and encouraging. A lot gets accomplished in each lesson and Sarah has advanced steadily over time. She looks forward to her lesson each week. We would recommend Sean to anyone looking for a piano teacher for their child.

I teach an aggressive curriculum, but one that is tailored to each student's individual strengths and weaknesses, and I always remain gentle and patient while guiding my students through the rewarding process of learning to create music. The Kew-Forest School

Over my three years teaching at Kew-Forest I have organized regular performances for students and parents so that students can share the music they learn to create and have the performance experience necessary for mastery. Students learn to use their singing voices first, then they learn how to read and write music while playing instruments including piano, guitar, ukulele, djembe, and metallophone. I organize regular workshops and performances for students to share their progress with their peers during the school day and with their parents at night. With the transition to remote learning I shifted the curricula’s goals to music composition by using online platforms including Chrome Music Lab, SoundTrap, and Incredibox. Students learned about musical form and notation by applying it to their online compositions, and I initiated a Kew-Forest SoundCloud page where I upload student compositions for the entire school community to enjoy. On one recent assignment, students were each assigned a different traditional Latin American rhythm that they needed to construct using percussion instruments in Chrome Music Lab. Once they had constructed the percussion rhythm they composed their own melodies and harmonies to accompany it. This activity required them to apply their music theory knowledge in a creative and exciting way while also learning about ethnomusicology. For another assignment, students needed to compose music inspired by a theme. One theme was “Winter,” and another was “When I Grow Up,” taken from the song title to that year’s school musical, Matilda.
