Learning a new language can be difficult and intimidating--my enthusiasm and expertise in the language spans 12 years, a portion of which I lived, worked, and researched in Germany full time. I bring this passion with me into tutoring sessions, and I especially look forward to working with beginners. Let me help you at whatever stage you might be at--from your first Guten Tag! to staying current or even losing an accent.

About Scott O.

I'm an anthropologist who has lived, worked, and studied in Germany. A part of my job as an anthropologist is to understand German language and culture from the perspective of Germans (and the significant population living in Germany who do not consider themselves German!). This means that my 12 years of German study draws from not only linguistic fluency, but an experiential knowledge of everyday life in the German-speaking world.

Immersion and consistency is really the key to language learning. Encountering German in lots of different contexts--even when you don't totally understand all of it--prompts you to reinforce what you've learned, so my lessons incorporate a lot of German-language media. Fortunately, there's a lot of really excellent music, movies, and TV out there for us to work with! For this reason, my lessons really focus on not only learning the fundamentals of grammar and syntax in the language, but encouraging students to start thinking in German.

I teach German to students at all levels of experience and proficiency, and with diverse goals and motivations for learning the language. Tell me about what excites you about learning German, or what you plan to achieve, and I'll show you how I can help get you there!
