I am a performer and teacher residing in Brooklyn, NY. Although I am classically trained, my unique methods apply to all kinds of singing styles--even to speaking! I believe that music lessons should be fun and flexible. I work with my students to find exercises and songs that are most suited for their learning styles and tastes. *** Lesson Details *** My approach begins and ends with the breath. Breath creates pitch, rhythm, musicality, and emotion. If you think about it, each way we show our emotions begins with breath--laughing, crying, sighing, etc. I use a very natural approach to singing, exaggerating the noises we and the animal kingdom already make every day to sing in a very healthy, sustainable way. Have you ever wondered why a dog can bark for hours without tiring? Why a baby can cry forever? They are using their air and resonance efficiently! We all know how to do this instinctively--we just need to become aware of how we do it, and how to use this knowledge to inform healthy singing. Through unique breathing and vocal exercises, I will help you to become a confident and consistent singer and artist. The end goal is that you can become your own teacher, diagnosing and fixing your own difficulties. *** Studio Equipment *** I teach in my home and have an upright piano. There is street parking available. *** Specialties *** I specialize in classical training. I can teach Italian, French, German, and English diction.

The perfect teacher Sarah G. has been my voice teacher for some months now. She has had only my untrained, rusty soprano to work with. But with patience and an expert knowledge of the way the body works to produce sound, she is retooling my voice into something that resembles a musical instrument. She knows both the limits and potential of my voice, pushes me into places I didn’t think I could go, and supports my attempts to go there. In other words, the perfect teacher. She is pleasant, prompt and professional, while being warm and encouraging. Her own beautiful voice is almost motivation enough for a student like me; if only I could sound like that.... Some day. Maybe. Sarah’s own training has been exemplary. Julie Simson was her teacher at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where Sarah earned her bachelor’s degree in vocal performance. Moving on the McGill University, she received her master’s degree in opera performance under the tutelage of Aline Kutan. With her current coach, Gary Norden, Sarah is extending her training not only to create a singing career for herself, but to rebuild and refine voices like mine. I am lucky to have found her.
