Hello potential students, my name is Sam! I would love to be your new music teacher. I received my Master of Music, Performance degree from San Diego State University where I served as a Graduate Assistant. During this time I conducted the SDSU Percussion Ensemble, performed professionally with the San Diego Symphony and San Diego City Ballet, and had a large private studio of 37 students. I recently moved to San Luis Obispo to work in arts administration. My experience as a professional performer, educator, and administrator provides my students with a well rounded background to pursue music at a variety of levels in a fun and engaging manner. *** Lesson Details *** Whether my students are young or old, taking lessons as a hobby or wishing to pursue a career in music, I tailor my lessons to meet each individual student’s needs and expectations. I want you or your child to have fun during our lessons but I also want you to grow as a musician. I try to build on what the student already likes, listens to, and has a passion for. I encourage students to bring their favorite songs to learn during lessons. I also use songs by classic artists like The Beatles and other historical standards as they can provide a perfect (fun and familiar) platform to learn many different aspects of drumming and musical performance. In addition to being a drummer and percussionist, I have a strong background in music theory and I want to make sure my students not only know how to play their instrument, but also become familiar with reading and writing music. After a few months taking lessons, you or your child can expect to have a better understanding of music and have acquired the basic tools and techniques which will allow you to play your favorite pieces of music. *** Travel Equipment *** For drum set lessons, I will provide a practice pad for starter lessons as students learn the basics of drumming. It is highly preferred that the student have a drum set at their location. The student should also supply a location in which to have a private lesson. *** Specialties *** All styles of drumming *** Curriculum *** My curriculum changes depending on the student's ability level, age, and instrument of choice. I typically use a method book for reinforcement of musical fundamentals, and a supplementary "project" piece of music that the student enjoys playing and learning. I do this so that my students can see direct connections between music fundamentals and playing music that they enjoy. My own personal knowledge and experience as a musician is always added to each lesson as well.
