    I play and teach drums and percussion in numerous styles ranging from rock, jazz, funk, hip-hop, and pop to Indian classical tabla and Balinese gamelan. I'm passionate about many kinds of music and I enjoy working with students of all ages. In addition to drums and percussion, I teach music theory and beginning piano. I'm currently working towards a PhD in Cross-Cultural Musicology at UC Santa Cruz, and I'm accepting students throughout the Bay Area.

    Sam has been teaching our son Sam for a year now. He is an enthusiastic, focused and motivating instructor. What our son loves about Sam is that he is teaching him to play drums through the music that our son loves and relates to. This makes it that much more "fun" to learn. Sam is always on time, very communicative, professional, passionate about drums and great with kids! We highly recommend Sam as an instructor.

    Sam is wonderful drum instructor. He is very friendly and my teen son feels very comfortable around him. They worked for several months on drums and Sam even took time to listen to my son's DJ music production. Sam gave him his opinion and suggestions for improvements. We are very happy with how fast my son began to play drums only after the start of a few lessons. We highly recommend him!!!

    I was the drum teacher at Stacy's Music in Charlottesville, VA and taught between 10-20 lessons per week to students ranging from 5-60 years old. Every week I crafted custom lesson plans designed meet the needs of individual students based on skill level and interests. This teaching experience solidified my love for working with children and my belief that a student's age doesn't matter if they are motivated to learn. Since leaving Stacy's in 2012, I have taught privately. I gladly accept students who are passionate about becoming better musicians and better people!
